Chapter Three

It only took a few months for Peril to fear her child's hatching. What if she touches them, but burns them? What if they're not as healthy as they look so far? How will she take care of them if she can't touch them? She had overheard a conversation about her egg, and about the slim chance of it being unable to get touched, even by Clay. Why hadn't they told her to her face?

She had tried to distract herself from those thoughts by thinking of names. Peril called her egg Wildfire, but that's not a very appropriate name for anyone. With her body wrapped loosely around her egg she began to contemplate. She cycled around the multiple options, but Lightning and Thunder wouldn't leave her mind for some reason. She has absolutely no idea why, but decided that can probably be used as their nicknames.

Her claws clenched around the shriveled blankets of burnt moss that she had tried to lay around her egg as a visual burned into her already racing mind, her crushing the near-hatching egg into pulp, it's body crunching under her sizzling talons as Clay watched in horror. She held back boiling tears as the egg layed so innocently on top of the soft fire-proof blanket that Starflight had suggested her to use, the orange light of the sunset shining off its gorgeous shell like a gem.

Maybe if it's a girl, their name can be Rose? Probably not, that sounds kinda like a name a Rainwing would have. What's a good, strong name that's neutral for both genders... it has be be a little less intense then a normal Skywing name. After a bit, she decided on Jewel. A Skywing's most valued treasure. Her most valued treasure...

Peril's eyes widened when her gorgeous egg twitched and rolled over onto it's side causing her to automatically jump away, afraid that she could hurt it. She cursed herself for being so jumpy and gently put the egg back in its proper position. Making sure to keep a mental note to keep her eyes on them as she slowly re-curled around her precious Jewel.

Even with her fear rapidly growing, Peril had known she must get over those gruesome thoughts and take care of her child. She's not going to become like her parents were. Sadly, she can't do anything about the father part but she's sure it'll be fine. One parent is better than none, after all. Not to mention that Clay would gladly take up that role for the dragonet, he already has a weirdly strong bond with the egg, much like herself. But he's nowhere near as obsessive as Peril is, though.

She screwed her eyes shut as she hesitantly nudged the quaking egg with her slender snout. Her stomach felt like it twisted into tight knots as the egg only shook even more. Peril scaredly called for help as the egg warmed at a vigorous pace and almost seemed to glow. That surely isnt normal! Starflight, Clay, and Thorn were in at an instant as they watched in awe, followed by a wobbling Stonemover, barely being able to walk. Starflight couldn't actually see it, but he could feel it.

Stonemover watched the egg as it slowly stopped shaking, and it slowly calmed into a soft glow. "It's going to hatch soon. Tonight, at the latest," he observed simply, noticing just how shoken up Peril looked. After a bit of discussion, Stonemover and Clay agreed to stay to help Peril through hatching the egg. They all knew she was scared, possibly even terrified, and they were determined to help her through this.

Hours passed of staring at the nearly-hatched dragon-to-be, and Peril felt more scared than she ever was her entire life. Her eyes felt like they would nearly pop out of her skull as she barely kept her breath at a normal pace. Day slowly turned into a three-mooned night as the egg shook and twitched, the moonlight shone on Jewel as if it was giving them her blessing.

Finally, after an eternity of suspense and increasingly growing fear, the shell of the egg began to crack. First, it was just a single small one. But it rapidly grew to multiple big ones, until... it melted. All of the egg shell melted. A small dragonet coughed as they crawled out of the weird mushy mixture of melted egg shell and thin egg goop. All Peril could see through the weird substances was her child's gold and silver scales, with only a small bit of red to match Peril.

She began to hyperventilate as the child looked at her with such curiously innocent eyes that froze her own fearful ones. Stonemover moved to try to calm the terrified mother as Clay attempted to scoop up the new dragonet, only to topple over backwards as they opened their mouth and lightning found itself in the air, just missing his face, followed by the deafening sound of thunder. The child's once curious eyes turned to absolute anger due to their mother having a meltdown, it must be because of these strange dragons, right?

After Peril was able to calm down she calmly walked towards her Jewel, causing their eyes to fill with curiosity once more. She slowly reached her talon out, trying to erase any trace of fear from her posture as her claw gently grazed her child's cheek. It was silent for a bit, until the little child jumped into her arms with a squeak and wrapped her forelegs around her neck, only to tense up. Jewel looked into her mother's eyes with sudden understanding as she affectionately licked her cheek.

Peril felt a great sense of relief that she could touch her Jewel's back and ignored the fact that she felt like molten lava in her arms as she squeezed the fiery kid, not minding that her own scales molded a bit. This is her child even if she doesn't look like her. That doesn't matter, she loves her anyway. Even if she ends up breathing lightning, that isn't a big deal, is it? As long as she doesn't hurt anyone, it's fine. Right?

~Summary of Jewel~

Gender; Female

Exterior; Gold lightning like scales that seem to glow. Naturally big wings that are weirdly stunning. Claws that are shaped like lightning bolts and numerous red speckles that litter her whole body. A few scales on her face that fade into a shocking silver (hehe) around her eyes, her tail fades to silver starting at the middle, she has blue eyes just like her mother.

A bit more interior; She has teeth that viciously curl inwards. Jewel has an extreme amount of fire. (Sorry I used avatar the last Airbender dynamics there)

Extras; If she can concentrate enough, she can dismiss her heat into lightning that she can breath out later. She has barely any control over her right talon and foreleg.

Special abilities; keep reading to find out 😈
