Chapter Five
The time seems to trickle by so slowly that I feel as though someone is purposely making the seconds feel longer. The five hours of waiting to spend time learning telekinesis with Blake instead feels like ten hours. The boredom that has been in me for majority of the day dissipates when the minute hand of the clock hits the 10 mark at 3 o'clock and the school bell rings, meaning that school is finally over.
I throw my things into my bag and leave the history classroom. Compared to other people, I can tolerate history class, especially since there are some writing aspects to it. But today, I couldn't stand taking notes through the hour lesson since I had so much more to look forward to when the class would end. Walking through the busy hallway, I head to my locker to grab my homework assignments that I kept stored in there. Clicking the lock closed, I jump at the sight of Blake standing right behind me, then laugh.
"You scared me!" I tell him with a giggle.
"Do I?" he asks, then laughs with me. "Come with me. I have a great place we can train," he says, then walks away from me and my locker. I follow him out to the school parking lot and into his silver ford car. Turning the key, the car starts up and the radio turns on. The music is good as it breaks the awkward silence of the ride. I pull down the beige sun visor and look at the road ahead of us.
"So, where exactly are we going?" I ask, curious, especially since I just got in a car with someone whom I've only known for two days and am trusting that they are taking me somewhere safe.
"I thought we could train at my place in the backyard, since my parents won't be home until later this evening." Blake explains.
"Oh, ok. Sounds good," I reply. The awkward silence continues for the rest of the ride there.

Blake pulls up to his house and puts the car into park. I'm in a bit of awe looking at the place. The drive was 15 minutes into one of the nicer neighbourhoods in this town, so I was partially expecting this. The house is completely renovated to fit into the sleek white and grey homes of todays society, complete with solar panels on the roof to be more ecologically friendly. The well kept front yard has an abundance of flowers lining the path to the large, glass front door, and newly planted trees sit on either side of the path to be symmetrical to each other. A two car garage sits on the left of the house.
"Nice place you have," I tell Blake, still admiring it all.
"Thanks. Now let me take you to the backyard," he replies and leads me through a dark grey gate to the back. The backyard, however, is quite bland. It is flat and blank with no vegetation except for the grass that is touching every corner of it. The grass, though, is still quite green and well taken care of.
"Let's begin" Blake says. We stand facing each other. I stifle a scream as he lifts me off the ground without touching me like he did yesterday at school.
"Haha, funny trick Blake. You can put me down now." I tell him as I notice how high off of the ground and getting. He laughs and puts me down gently. In return, I stare at Blake and try to lift him off of the ground, but fail. He notices me starring at him like he does when he picks me up, then shakes his head.
"Not yet Stacy. I'm too heavy for you to lift since you're just starting. Why don't we try something lighter?" Blake suggests, then runs into the house. I go to follow him, partially out of curiosity of what's in the house, but decide not to since he didn't take me through the house to get to the backyard in the first place. He obviously doesn't want me inside.
Blake returns a little more then a minute later with a bucket of objects. He turns the bucket over, dumping it's contents onto the grass. Tennis balls bounce up and down, and utensils clatter to the ground with a metal clink. An apple starts to roll toward my feet, as well as a jar of peanut butter.
"First things first," Blake bends down to pick up one of our training tools, "a fork." He holds the silver fork in the palm of his hand, then starts to make it levitate, only to let it drop down into his hand. I stare at the fork and try to get it to move up.
"Remember, you're the boss of the fork, not the fork itself, so you get to tell it what to do. And don't take your eyes off of it." Blake offers his tips. I pretend to tap into the fork like I do when I go into people's mines, commanding it to move upwards towards the sky, but it doesn't budge. I look back up at Blake, frustrated.
"You know what? Maybe a fork wasn't the best starting item. Let's try," Blake drops the fork and moves a tennis ball up to his hand, "this. Got it?"
"Ok. I can do this," I reply, trying to be optimistic. My eyes penetrate the ball as I focus all of my energy onto making it move. 'Go up' I think to it. It doesn't budge. "Go up!" I say aloud this time. And to my surprise, it does. "I did it!" I say, then start jumping up and down, excited.
"Actually, I did it." Blake stares down, guiltily.
"Oh." I stop jumping.
"It's ok though! You'll get it eventually Stacy." He says, smiling. "I have to cut our practice time though. My parents will be home soon, and I won't have an excuse for us lifting things with our minds." He laughs. "I can drive you home though?"
I look up at the sky and see that it's starting to get dark. "Ok. Thanks." I accept Blake's offer, then walk to the front of the house and get into the passenger seat of Blake's car, ready for another awkwardly silent drive back to my place.
