Spell Prep

"Gas-work Métis?" Autumn whispers to herself, tapping her pen on her chin.

She had worked hard into yesterday evening to get her room reorganized and cleaned so it could be as efficient as it could be.

But now, the spell. Unlike in the fairy tales, witches did not have a book of spells and incantations that they could just access whenever they pleased. No, it was much more time-consuming than that. Especially, for a young witch like herself.

Instead, a witch had a fairly-large book of spell parts. It would be comparable to a dictionary of words. With these spell parts, and the knowledge of how to use them, a witch could write a spell to fit any of their needs. Unluckily for Autumn, she was not good at finding the spell parts that she needed that would work with the components she already had in place.

Writing a spell is like a word puzzle but it involves, what is nicknamed by witches, colors. Colors is what witches call the different categories of spell parts. Each category has different spell parts that fall under it. This is where Autumn struggles. Only some of the colors would work together to form a spell. Some couldn't be put right next together, but could be linked using a different color. Without the proper trans versions, the spell simply would not work. In this case, the spell often had to be rewritten.

And this spell was a bit more complex than Autumn had practiced in the past.

But, if she hadn't have been so careless, this would have never happened.
