04. Acceptance
Shouto sat at a bar, throwing back another shot as he awaited for his friends to arrive — he had texted a few of them to see if they'd want to join him. It was late in the night, and earlier, after having sex with Momo several times when they got home, he decided to go out and have a few drinks to help clear his mind..
Even though Momo suggested that they not focus or think about having a baby together, it was literally all he could think of. He wasn't usually a heavy drinker, but tonight he definitely needed one. The alcohol numbed his senses and mind, allowing him to become easily distracted and briefly forget about all the worries he had about having a kid of his own.
He took another shot, gulping it down easier than his previous six. He blinked several times, allowing the stinging liquid to seep in to his throat and effect him more than before. "Alright. That's enough of that stuff," he said to the bartender while pointing at the empty glasses. "Make me a rum and coke. And get some more shots ready for two more people," he said as he looked around the bar, spotting the only two who could make it out to meet up with him.
"The hell did you call us out here for, Icy Hot?" Bakugou questioned as he sat down at the bar, taking one of the shot glasses that had just been refilled. "I'll have you know I was about to go to bed."
"Then why'd you come out, Kacchan?" Deku asked, taking his own shot.
Bakugou scoffed and rolled his eyes at his question like it was the stupidest thing he had ever said. "It's not every day that Half n Half here goes out drinking. I wanna see him get shitfaced. What did Big Tits do you? She cheat on you with someone better looking?"
"What the fuck is wrong with you?" Shouto questioned, clearly feeling his drinks. His eyes widened slightly as the bartender placed his rum and coke in front of him. He picked it up and sipped it, tasting nothing but cola. He was already drunk enough that he could no longer taste the alcohol or feel the burning sensation run down his throat. "She didn't leave me, even though I thought for a brief second that she might...."
"Did you guys have a fight or something?" Deku asked, hoping he was wrong. It was very unusual for Shouto to text them and invite them for drinks, especially since it was midnight... He came because he was concerned and just wanted to make sure his friend wasn't being stupid.
"Eh, kinda?" Shouto replied as more of a question before taking another sip of his drink. "But everything is fine because I will not turn out like him."
"Like who?" Bakugou asked, arching his brow in curiosity as he downed another shot.
"My father. The bastard," Shouto grumbled, rolling his eyes.
"Endeavor? Wait.. Did Momo finally talk to you? Is that what you guys fought about?"
"Talk about what?" Bakugou questioned, looking around Shouto and glaring at Deku. "Are you trying to keep me out of the loop again, Nerd!?"
"It's not my call if you know or not right now, Kacchan. It's something between Shouto and Momo that I probably shouldn't even know.."
"Tch.. What? You knock her up?" Bakugou asked, grinning slyly at Shouto.
"Probably. Five tests said so, plus she missed her time or whatever," Shouto sighed, holding his head as he leaned against his arm. "I just don't know what to do. How am I supposed to be a good parent? I don't know a thing about children except how not to treat them.."
"Well, that's a start," Deku said, trying to reassure his clearly intoxicated best friend about it all. "You can learn from his mistakes. Your mom was- is a wonderful mother and you can take the things she did with you growing up and do them with your kid," he said, smiling brightly at him.
"Wait, for real? You put a baby in Top Heavy? You dumb ass!" Bakugou laughed, nearly spilling the shot in his hand. "Fuck, I'm glad I won't have to deal with this shit," he chuckled as he downed his fourth drink.
"Kacchan, keep your voice down.."
"Yeah, shut up, Bakugou."
"You shut up! If you don't wanna talk about it then don't bring it up!" Bakugou barked, taking one final shot. "If you just wanna drink to forget then you can't sit around being all mopey about shit that hasn't even happened yet!"
"He does have a point, Shouto," Deku added, looking from Shouto to Bakugou. Both of his friends were already so intoxicated — Shouto had been drinking longer but Bakugou was such a lightweight when it came to alcohol, he easily caught up to Shouto's level. Already Deku knew he needed to be the sober one, stopping himself after just the one shot.
Shouto lifted a brow at Deku, wondering what be meant by his statement. Deku sighed and began to explain, using words and phrasing that he should be able to understand. "Kacchan is saying that you're freaking out about something that won't happen for another nine months. If Momo suggested that you don't think about or worry about it tonight, then don't. Just have some fun. We're here with you. You should be drinking in celebration not out of worry or stress," he said, smiling kindly at him. "Why don't we go shoot some pool? Or you could just call it a night and go home to Momo. Does she know you're out?"
"I dunno. She fell asleep after we did some stuff and I needed some fresh air," Shouto replied before downing the rest of his drink.
"Holy fuck. Slow down. You deep throat your damn drink?"
"Well kinda. I'm drinking it," Shouto said with an amused smirk. "But I'm only ever on the receiving end of deep throating," he added on.
Drunk Shouto lost his filter and gained a very lewd sense of humor. It was the main reason Bakugou had come out and began to drink so he could enjoy it even more. Deku however wasn't one for their sense of humor while like this, and he always did his best to stop them before they could really embarrass themselves and do anything too stupid that could get them on the front page of some trashy tabloid.
Deku stood up and walked around Shouto, putting himself between his two drunken idiot friends. "Alright. As the only rational one here I'm cutting you both off," he said, taking the final shot from Bakugou. "Now, let's get out of here and go get some fresh air. You both need it."
"Tch. Okay, mom," Bakugou grumbled, causing Shouto to laugh at his "joke".
Deku rolled his eyes and sighed, seeing just how immature they had become. "Such a good one, Kacchan... Now let's get going," he said, taking a step back so they could get on their feet.
Deku paid the bill and their trio left the bar. Being some of the top Heroes around they obviously attracted attention wherever they went, even now in the middle of the night eyes were drawn to them. Deku, Shouto, and Ground Zero were amazing Heroes and seeing them off duty together, casually hanging out like regular people gave citizens a different perspective about them. However, they knew better than to bother that specific trio — one would be nice and friendly, while the other two would clearly want nothing to do with whoever came up to speak with them, especially now since alcohol was pumping through their veins.
The air outside was chilling. Snow was trickling down from the sky, lightly peppering the streets in a white powder. The part of town they were in wasn't very busy this time of the morning. The only people who were out were young people who were bar hopping — it was too cold for most people to be out and about past 12am, but these three weren't most people..
"Why'd we have to leave the bar?" Bakugou grumbled. "We just got there and it's fucking snowing now.." he complained while pulling his scarf over his face to warm himself more.
Deku buttoned his jacket up and shoved his hands into the pockets. "I know we just got there but you downed those shots like they were water, Kacchan. And Shouto, you've clearly had a few too many..." he said looking from Bakugou to Shouto.
Shouto shrugged his shoulders, the very mild action causing him to become off balance and stumble in place. "So? I deserve a drink every now 'n then," he said while swaying in place. "Besides... Um.. I had something.." he mumbled, his mind completely blanking on what he was going to say next. "Huh.. Maybe- maybe I should go home.."
"You're dumb ass called us out here for five fucking minutes and you're just gonna ditch us and go home?" Bakugou grumbled behind his thick scarf, his eyes glaring in Shouto's direction but not actually focused on him. "We're going out and doing something. I left Eijirou at home so I could fucking come out here for you, Ass Hat."
"You could have brought him," Deku said as their small trio began to walk along the sidewalk. The simple action of walking got Bakugou's blood pumping enough that he wasn't vigorously shivering anymore, which was Deku's goal. Currently they didn't have a destination in mind but he wanted to make sure at least one of his friends was sober enough that he wouldn't cause problems when he got home to his pregnant girlfriend..
Bakugou pulled his scarf down and took a deep breath, breathing the frozen air. "He needed to sleep. He gets too cranky if he doesn't get enough rest," he mumbled, rolling his eyes. "And I told him I'd make it up to him in the morning."
"Well we probably shouldn't stay out too late. Maybe just an hour to walk off your buzz," Deku replied with a smile. "I know Shouto needs to sober up more than you do.."
They both looked over at their third, watching him ignite small embers on the tip of his finger, melting the snowflakes as they fluttered down. His eyes were glazed in a humorous daze, his lips quirked up in an amused child-like smile as the snow melted into droplets of water, sizzling into nothing as they touched his fire.
"Tch.. Hey! Snowflake!" Bakugou growled, gaining Shouto's attention. "What the fuck-"
His yelling was suddenly interrupted by gunshots echoing through the neighborhood. The three Heroes looked in the direction of where it came from, their focus immediately sharpened to handle the situation at hand. "Guys, be professional. Let me handle the fighting," Deku said before activating his Quirk and dashing away in a blur of power.
Shouto rolled the left sleeve of his shirt up, emitting extraordinary heat to help warm Bakugou to get his Quirk more functional. "You go up, I'll stay down. Get a birds eye view and help Deku. I'll keep the civilians safe from any gunfire," he said, glancing at the blond.
Bakugou smirked as his palms began to sweat nitroglycerin. He let off a small chain of explosions, warming himself up. "Sure thing. Just don't get anyone killed," he growled with fire in his eyes. Bakugou ran forward and used his explosions to propel himself into the air, flying after Deku and the gunshots.
Shouto on the other hand used his ice, jettisoning himself along the icy road with extreme speed and precision — which was impressive given his blood alcohol level. He evaded cars and people who were running away, maneuvering around until he saw Deku and Bakugou ahead — Deku restraining several men who looked exactly alike and Bakugou fighting an additional ten of them, exploding them and making them disappear.
Must be a Duplication Quirk of some sort. Reminds me of Twice, Shouto thought as he neared the scene.
Once on site he saw that majority of people were gone and some were still running away, trying to find a place to hide. Shouto used his ice to help push them further away, getting them a safe distance from the fighting. Then he created a thick frozen barrier around the entire block, closing themselves off from the outside. "Zero! Fly out and make sure that there aren't anymore of this guy outside my ice!" he shouted, watching as Bakugou grabbed one of the clones and threw him into another.
The blond landed on a large frozen chunk of the nearby building, nodding to Shouto and blasting off through the only exit in the sky. Deku on the other hand floated in the center of it all, emitting his Black Whips from his hands, instantly restraining all the men who were left behind and kept duplicating. His power wrapped them tightly, squeezing them hard enough that the weaker ones were eliminated.
"One of these guys is the original," Deku growled, looking down at Shouto. "Once we find him, freeze him in place! If his body temperature gets too low he won't have the strength to use his Quirk!"
Shouto nodded, acknowledging his plan. Deku remained in the air, focusing the power of his whips on one Villain at a time, making them disappear one by one. Eventually he located the real one — the one struggling the most to get out of his grasp.
Deku dropped him down and before he could land and make anymore copies he was frozen — his entire body was encapsulated in ice, all except his head. "Got him. What was he doing?" Shouto questioned as Deku dropped down beside him.
"He thought it'd be fun to have a fire fight with himself. He's clearly drunk and not the brightest," he replied, glaring at the captured man while crossing his arms over his chest.
"Wow.... He was shooting at the copies of himself?"
Deku nodded and sighed. "Yeah.. Get rid of all this ice now. The cops are probably almost here."
Shouto did as he was told, using his left side and melting the thick layers of ice, making it disappear without a trace. Once it was all gone the flashing lights of police cars appeared down the street, their sirens blaring as they neared. Bakugou came flying overhead, getting to them before the cops did.
He landed beside Deku and Shouto giving them a thumbs up, telling them that there were no more clones. "There were a few left but I took care of 'em."
"Good. We don't need any drunks causing trouble with guns," Deku said as he glared down at the captured, shivering man. "I'll handle handing him over. Why don't you guys take off and get home. I'm sure Momo and Eijirou would like you back."
"Yeah sure. It's too cold out here for my liking," Bakugou grumbled as he covered himself up more now that his adrenaline subsided.
"You're probably right.. I'll see ya later," Shouto said, setting his hand on the ice and melting the guy free.
Deku fully restrained him once more with his Black Whips, figuring he wouldn't be up for another round with him given that he had no energy left. While Deku handed him over to the police, Bakugou and Shouto headed home, both of them heading in the same direction for the time being.
"So, your dumb ass is having a kid then?" Bakugou asked, bringing the topic back up once he remembered it coming up before.
Shouto sighed and scratched the back of his head. "Seems like it. She's got an appointment tomorrow and we'll see what the Doctor says," he replied. The alcohol in him had begun to dissipate and he was now only buzzed, not drunk. "I still don't know how I feel about it.. She said she's happy and that's really all that matters, right?"
"Tch.. She won't be happy if you aren't happy. Idiot," Bakugou scoffed. "Your problem is your shitty childhood right? And Endeavor being a piece of shit to you and your mom when you were a kid, yeah?"
"Yeah..." Shouto mumbled, hating how casually Bakugou seemed to be able to talk about it.
"Well you aren't anything like your old man. He's a hard ass and from what I understand he used to be much worse.. Growing up in a place like that made you strong though, and gave you perspective on the things you wished you could've had to have a happy home life. Now you have the chance for that with Ponytail and your spawn. Except you'll be the dad this time and I doubt there's a single person out there who thinks you'll be anything like him."
Bakugou's insight was always appreciated and impressive given his usual sour attitude. Shouto knew that everything everyone had told him was true, but when it came to family matters he was just doubtful.
Living in a happy household seemed like a fairytale, something that couldn't be realistic. Sure he and Momo rarely fought and he hated the feeling he had when they did fight or argue, but he'd never forcefully laid his hands on or struck her in any way. He'd raised his voice before but that was the extent and even then he despised how it made him feel.. The thought of bringing a child into the world just scared him and he didn't want to mess up raising one..
"I get what you're saying, but, it's just too much for me right now.."
Bakugou stared at him with a piercing gaze as they stopped, waiting to cross the street. "You're not.. Gonna leave her because of this are you?"
"What? No. I wouldn't do that," Shouto scoffed, rolling his eyes at Bakugou's assumption. "I just need time to process it all. That's why I went out for some drinks tonight. It's a lot to take in... Like, imagine if Kirishima just went and adopted some kid and you had to be okay with it."
"That's a lousy example," Bakugou chuckled. "I do get what you're saying though. But you have nine months to come to terms with it. You'll be fine, even if you are a whiny idiot sometimes."
"You're one to talk," Shouto grumbled back. "Just get home safe," he said before taking his leave and heading in a separate direction, not wanting to talk to anyone anymore.
"Same to you, Snowflake!" he hollered after him, laughing at the nickname.
By now Bakugou's nicknames didn't phase him in the slightest. He simply ignored him as he made his way home, walking alone with his thoughts.
Leave her... Like hell I'd be that guy, he internally grumbled, pissed that Bakugou would even bring something like that up. A baby, and having a happy family.. It is something I always wished I had... I guess now's my chance to make that happen...
He walked home alone, along the dark snow covered streets. Times like this Shouto was thankful for his ability to regulate his temperature. It didn't take any thinking to do anymore, his body just adjusted so he was comfortable at all times.
By the time he made it back to his house it was well after one in the morning. He was quiet as he entered their home, being careful as to not make any unnecessary loud noises as he shut the door and removed his shoes and coat. Momo had gone to bed around eleven and directly afterwards he had left — she was still fast asleep.
Quietly he walked to their room, trying his hardest to avoid the creaky portions of the floorboards. He was very unsuccessful. The creaking was loud as the mildly tipsy Hero stumbled into his room, tripping over clothing that was still spread across the floor before flopping down on the bed and sinking into the mattress.
"Crap that was too loud," he mumbled, annoyed with himself with how poorly he'd handled everything over the last few hours.
Beside him, Momo rolled over. Her eyes tiredly fluttered open, blinking slowly as she saw her boyfriend laying on his stomach, his breath smelling of alcohol. "Shouto? Did you go out..?" she tiredly asked, sitting up on her elbow as her eyes began to adjust to the darkness.
Shouto groaned as he rolled onto his back, exhaling deeply. "Yeah. I just needed to get out of the house for a bit. Deku and Bakugou met up with me and we talked a little.. And stopped some drunken idiot near the bar.." he said as his tense body began to relax. He set his hands over his chest, lacing his fingers together as he shut his eyes. "But, I do think I'm happy now at the thought of having a baby with you."
"Really?" she hummed, scooting closer to him so she could rest her head on his chest and shoulder. "You came around faster than I thought you would."
Shouto breathed out a tired laugh, moving his arm around her so he could hold her against him. "Well I've been known to be a dense idiot at times," he joked, using his friend's words. "But us starting a family is a good and happy thing.."
Momo smiled at his words, even though they were slightly slurred. "I'm glad to hear it. You'll be a great father, Shouto," she said, leaning close and kissing his cheek. "I know that we can do this.."
"Yeah.. I know we'll do our best...."
