Sunburns
Emma's words rang in his ears. "At least you got to say goodbye."
"What do you mean?" He asked hollowly.
"Most of us didn't get to say goodbye before our parents died," Emma said softly, not looking at him. "Kat, Onyx, Colyn and I, Vanessa's family didn't get to say goodbye to her, so many families separated without a goodbye." Emma had tears running down her face now, but so did everyone else sitting on the bed.
Secilia moved next to Emma, wrapping an arm around her shoulders.
"I'm sorry," was his only reply.
Emma wiped away her tears, glancing at him. "Don't be, we all have suffered, but we can move on. Secilia, you start going over his family tree, and I'll walk him back to the remains of his house."
She slid out of Secilia's grasp, standing on the floor. "Come on Eli, they'll be looking for you, after not having found your body along with your family's."
Eli reluctantly slid off the bed too, standing next to Emma, who put a hand on his shoulder.
"Ah, cheer up buddy, if we can get you out of a foster home and adopt you, you can be in Slugterra all the time." Emma teleported them to behind a store in the town next to the house. "Come on, I'm taking you home, or as close to your home as we need to get before the social services people find us. At which point, I'm afraid I'll have to leave. I'm sorry I can't stay here the entire time."
Eli nodded, halfway leaning on her as they walked out of the alley.
They were found within minutes, the social service people quickly hustling Eli away.
Emma watched them go for a while, then teleported away, appearing in the living room where everyone had apparently gathered. "You find something Secilia?" She asked, pulling her legs up so she was sitting in the air. Secilia and Danny were doing much the same, but Colyn was mostly asleep with his head on Annmarie's lap.
"Yeah, I was looking around, and then remembered that Eli's last name is Shane. I didn't think much of it the first time you told me, then I realized something. Loraine's last name before Garrison was Shane. She has to be related to him in some way."
"Speaking of her, where is she?"
"Getting groceries. Adam confirmed that Shane was her original last name, and I dug around a little. Apparently, Eli was living with his aunt and uncle because his dad had disappeared, and his mom had left him. I found his missing mom. She's your mother."
Emma blinked. "Mom is Eli's mom too?"
"So, does that mean technically we get custody?" Onyx asked, tilting her head.
"Well, Adam and Loraine do," Secilia corrected. "I think. I'll tell Adam, then get the social services the information."
"And Loraine. You need to tell her too," Emma offered. "Hey, Annmarie, where's clownfish head?"
"Splashing around in the pool, he's got some minor molting going on. He's most likely rubbing his back against the edges of the pool."
"You guys molt?" Onyx asked, confused.
"Well, it's summer, so a little, yeah. I haven't started yet. No dry and itchy scales for me yet, thank the oceans," Annmarie said. "It's like the peeling you do when you get sunburnt. Annoying, and kinda necessary, and mostly just fun to pick at."
"I don't get sunburnt anymore," Emma said reflectively.
"But you make an excellent substitute for an ice pack when we do," Kat pointed out, her tail flicking once.
"I don't even actually produce cool temperatures, I just siphon off the heat from your sunburnt nerves," Emma protested.
"Feels just like a icepack to us," Ankira offered. "But I guess I don't ever sunburn either."
"Do you think you'd turn purple if you did?" Danny mused. "I mean, blue and red make purple, don't they?"
"Danny, her blood is blue. She'd just turn a darker shade of blue, just like when she blushes," Secilia said in a bored tone. "Like how we blush green when transformed. The liquid in place of blood is bright green, and therefore we blush green. We'd also probably sunburn green."
Danny looked at her shocked. "What? We'd sunburn green?"
"Well, the red color of sunburn is because of the increased blood flow to the capillaries in the affected area, so yeah, I'm fairly sure we'd sunburn at least tinted green."
"Does that mean the Elemental Protectors sunburn different colors?" Summaria sat forward, her book now closed and off to the side.
"I suppose so, I guess you'd have to ask them," Secilia replied, shrugging.
(A/N) And that's all, night!
