Chapter 3
Peter never felt more nervous in his entire life, for a week he couldn't even sleep straight thinking about that exam, in his head he knew that he put the right number of questions wrong, but he couldn't shake the bad felling he had in the pit of his empty rumbling stomach.
He hadn't eaten anything today, since it was end of the month Aunt may was still waiting for her paycheck, so right now his small apartment was void of any food. He just wanted to get through this week, and then he could go find a job and help his aunt with the bills.
With a sigh he forced himself to exit his apartment and drag himself to school, he wanted to wait and see if May got home from her night shift, to talk to her, 'just in case' he thought. But she didn't get home yet, and it was getting late, so he had to go.
His relief was instant when he arrived at school and saw that no government cars were parked out front. That could only mean one thing, no one had been selected, Peter was finally at peace, he had made it, he would see his aunt again tonight.
This was being the best day in Peter's life, he was free from the one thing that had tormented him all his life, he could finally know that he would be next to his aunt and friends for the rest of his life. That day, nothing else matter, he laughed with Ned, making their plans for the future.
All was well, until his final class. Peter wasn't listening to anything his teacher was saying. Technically this day was useless, but it was required to all students attend until the end of the official selection day, so teachers filled it up with tips to find a job and false hopes for a bright future.
Peter snapped off his daydream, when he heard a sudden commotion of cars and voices just outside the school. He tried to look out the window, but from where he was sitting, he could not see a thing. Peter could almost hear the steeps going in the direction of his classroom, when suddenly the door opens, silencing his teacher.
"Can I help you?" his professor asked the intruders
Peter almost gasped when he recognized the symbol on their clothes, they were from the selection. Did someone on his class got selected? It couldn't be him, anyone but him.
Peter held his breath as they fully entered the room, ignoring his teacher
"Peter Parker?" one of them asked, his eyes surveying the room. Peter froze, no no no they couldn't be asking for him, please not him.
"Peter Parker?" he asked again, now looking at Peter. His whole class including his teacher were all looking at him.
Peter didn't trust himself to speak, so he responded with a shaky nod
"Under the law of the selection, you are to be escorted to section one"
The world stopped; all Peter's hope vanished when he heard that sentence. 'He got selected?' no that's impossible there as to be a mistake.
Peter was in shock as he was lifted from his chair by one of the officials. He led the static boy, with a firm grip on Peter's shoulder, down the multiple row of desks toward the front where he locked eyes with the apologetic ones from his teacher, to be honest if the man wasn't grabbing his arm by now he would have collapse. His entire body was shaking, and he was holding back his tears.
As he was dragged out of the class, he risked a glance to Ned, who looked at him with a shocked and sad expression, knowing he would never see his best friend ever again, and all their plans would be worth nothing.
The officials didn't speak as they walked down the empty corridor of the school, his few belongings long forgotten at his desk, he wouldn't be needing them anymore to where they were taking him.
Peter couldn't think straight, how could he have been selected he had made sure that he didn't score high enough to be selected, so why was he being walked out of school by government officials like he had just committed a crime.
Before he knew he was outside off the school gasping as he saw the black shinning cars lined up at the front.
"Watch your head, kid" Peter heard one say as the back door of the car was opened, and he was rushed inside.
Three of them joined him, two at the front and one next to him, before he heard a click that he could only assume was the lock of the doors.
"Ok let's go, the train leaves in two hours" with that they were on the go
Peter was in a trance the whole car ride, watching the trees pass by left behind along with his whole life, his home, his family, his friends all ruined because of a stupid test. Peter let a single tear escape his eyes, cleaning it instantly, he couldn't stop thinking how his aunt would react when she opened the door to their apartment, and it would be empty. He promised to her, he promised, and he broke that same promise. Would she think he did on purpose, would she think he wanted to get away from her? He just wanted to yell that he did love her, and this was all a mistake.
Lost in his thoughts, Peter didn't realize that they had arrived at the station until he felt someone open the door and pull him out.
Peter had never been at the station since it was far from his apartment and the only ones who could use it were the officials from section one. Suddenly, all the guards surrounded Peter and started to guide him to the entrance. For a second, he thought that they were doing it for him not to run away, but then he saw it, a crowd of people shouting while being pulled apart with more guards.
"They're taking one more" someone shouted, realizing who was in the middle of the circle
"Stop taking our children" more screamed trying to get past the guards that didn't seem to be able to hold them off. Suddenly, the guard that was beside him was pushed into the crowd and all hell broke loose.
With his side exposed, someone grabbed his arm and Peter was also pushed in the crowd. People were grabbing him everywhere and Peter desperately was trying to escape them squirming his hands in hopes the protestors let him go but at this point Peter was already on the ground screaming to stop touching him
Suddenly gunshots went off, and the crowd broke apart, and a guard finally was able to grab Peter, rushing him inside.
Once they were passed, the front doors, which were immediately locked to prevent any unauthorized personal to enter. Peter was sat on a chair, now that there wasn't anyone screaming next to him, his hears were ringing.
"Are you ok, kid?" someone asked examining his face "does anything hurt?" he asked again
Peter was in shock more than he was in pain, he didn't expect to see anyone trying to stop the selection process, not after the first year. Shaking his head in response, Peter was led through some hallways, finally being led away from the door that separated him from the rowing crowd.
To be honest, Peter was freaked out with the whole crowd situation, the way he was pushed and grabbed into it, all the people trying to take a piece of him screaming in his face, he thought he was going to die in the middle being stumped to death or something.
Finally, taking a deep breath felling his heartbeat slow down, the boy took a moment to look at his surroundings. The station was modern compared to the old city he lived in that was falling apart.
They stop at what looked like a security post with some guards in front of it
"Didn't you finish taking the kids in the morning?" the front guard said when he noticed Peter in the middle of the officials.
"Yeah, had to go back to pick up this one, he's a special order" the man next to him said, patting his shoulder.
"Just need his name to see if he has the authorization"
"Peter Parker" the man who was still grabbing his shoulder said.
As the guard in front of the computer typed in the computer, Peter was praying in his head for the authorization or whatever it was needed to go to section one was not there, and he could go back home. He would even do the whole way back on foot, it didn't matter, all it matter was going home.
The guard looked from the computer screen to peter them back to the screen "did he got caught in the crowd outside?" the guard asked
"Yeah, most of the security team already had gone with the kids, we couldn't hold them off" the guy next to him said
"Well, the king won't like that" the guard said, making a clicking sound with his tongue. Shit peter really hoped for the sake of that people that the king wouldn't learn about today events "ok, you can go through" he declared giving the official a stamped paper.
"Alright kid shoes off, anything you have in your pockets put it in here" Peter was given a tray "you have to pass the metal detector"
Well, that wasn't fair, was it, especially since Peter could clearly see the rest of the officials go through ignoring the red flashing light.
Sighing peter took out is ratty shoes off that were holding together with tape and put them in the basket ignoring the look that the man gave him "nothing in your pockets?" he asked raising an eyebrow to the boy
"No" he murmured, patting his pants pockets.
"Ok go through" finally the guy let go off his shoulder for him to pass the machine, not waiting long before following
Personally, Peter thought it was ridiculous they had so many precautions when it was just one of him, seriously what did they think he was hiding, he was literally wearing a shirt and some shorts, it was not like he was going to take out a katana from the back of his shirt or something.
The guy barely waited for Peter to put back his shoes before starting to drag him once again through the station, Peter was starting to question why they would need a station so big since they barely use it.
This time they reached the train, something that Peter had only seen in books. It wasn't as big as peter imagined, but it was a modern white and blue train. Peter was once again pushed in the direction of the waiting train, and entering Peter saw that it was almost full of the selection workers that hadn't gone with the first train.
Peter was directed to the back where the last row was vacant, away from everybody and the door, Peter noted.
"Sit here I will fetch the first aid to treat your face" His face, why would he require first aid for his face. Lightly touching his face, Peter immediately pulls away when he met with a sting, looking at his fingers he notices that they were coated in red. Shit, he guessed the crowd outside made some damage after all.
Peter takes some time looking at his surroundings, now without his bodyguard or whatever stuck to his side, Peter immediately looks at the door which unfortunately was already closed, so he was officially suck here.
Looking at everybody it was clearly he wasn't supposed to be here, and he was probably the reason the train was leaving behind schedule a couple of hours, but Peter couldn't care less, among everybody on the train he was the one that was suffering more with the situation.
Peter was taken out of his thoughts by his 'shadow' coming back with a bunch of stuff. He watched as he took out spray off a white box, probably the first aid, and spayed on Peter's cut, earning a gasp of surprise from Peter, making some of the other occupants look back to see what was happening at the back.
"Sorry it got some sting" the guy said, cleaning up the cut it some gaze before putting it away.
"Alright, I got you a jacket. It's going to get colder, the weather up north doesn't compare with this temperature" he handed Peter a simple black cotton jacket, that Peter hesitantly put it on. Peter almost melted at the immediate warmth that the jacket produced, warming peter instantly, the piece of fabric so soft that peter almost couldn't feel it. It was nothing compared to the old clothes that peter was used to. The boy was so mesmerized with the jacket that he almost didn't hear the man continuing talking.
"I got you some water" once again handing Peter the bottle "alright if you need something I will be seating at the front. Try to get some sleep, it will be a long ride; we are only schedule to arrive in the middle of the night"
Peter silently nodded, watching the man go to the front and seat down with his colleagues. Well, that surprised Peter, he didn't expect to be left alone, not that he was complaining since the last hours as been claustrophobic for him, with so many people always around.
Suddenly, the train jolted forward and started to move forward. So, this was it, he was going away, and most likely never coming back. He was leaving all behind, including his happiness.
Peter had no idea how much time it was going to take to arrive, but considering it was approaching the end of afternoon, and they were supposed to arrive in the middle of the night, it would take some time.
He leaned backwards on the very much comfortable seat, watching the view go by, trying not to think about how every second that passed he was farther from home.
An hour or so had already passed, the sun had already set. The train was silent, most people were working on their tablets, completely ignoring Peter existence.
Peter was honestly freezing, the jacket not doing much for the cold and his uncovered legs were shivering, in fact Peter was so cold he considered getting up and go ask for another jacket or something. But Peter didn't do that, instead he put his hands in the jacket pockets and tried to go to sleep to somehow escape both of the cold and this nightmare all together.
Clint Barton worked all his life for the king, so it was no surprise when he was invited to be part of the selection process.
Clint loved doing this job, it meant that he was giving kids a chance of getting away from poverty. Sure, there were a few tears from some, but there was always some other select kid that was able to convince the entire group how great this opportunity was for them, and they would entertain each other on the long train ride.
So, it was obviously a problem when he received a call to pick up one more kid that would have to ride with the rest of the staff, and to make matters worse the kid clearly didn't want to be here and was fighting tears the whole time. So, it pains him to leave the kid alone in the back of the train, but he had to do some work and the kid probably didn't want him to be next to him anymore.
It was already night when Clint turned off his tablet, already had communicated that they were on the way back, when he decided it was time he checked on the kid. With a quick look back, he cursed when he saw the state off the kid.
He should have known that a single jacket wouldn't do much with all the rags he was wearing, especially since they were traveling at night when the temperature dropped significantly. There was a reason that they transferred all the kids in the morning.
Getting up from his seat he searches in the upwards cabinets taking out a heavy blanket. Taking it to the back of the train, he covered the freezing kid with it, noticing how he immediately relaxed at the heat the blanket provided but luckily didn't wake up from his nap.
Clint surely didn't want the frighten kid to be awake for the rest of the ride.
Back at section one, king Stark was in his office when once again his selection director entered the room.
"I was just informed that the train is on his away here, with the kid you requested"
"Great" He said, still working on something in his computer
"Sir, I shall inform you that there were some problems in section two" The director said carefully
"What kind of problems" the man had all his attention on the director in front of him, problems were one thing he didn't like
"Well, there was like always, some crowd at the entrance of the train station" The king nodded at that, I was common that some parents gather around at the train station sometimes in hopes to see their children for the last time or simple show their revolt in the matter. Normally they didn't cause any problems.
"In the morning with the group we didn't have any issue, but most of the guards entered the first train with them. When we got Peter, the guards that had stayed couldn't hold off the crowd, and they manage to grab the boy for a minute or so"
"Did he get any injuries?"
"Just a scratch, that was treated on the moment they got on the train"
Tony sat there a little, thinking about the situation, "were the offenders identified?"
"Yes, at least the ones that grabbed the boy were, the others manage to escape"
"I want them executed tomorrow; they knew the law. And for now on, no one from section two can't come close to the station, they lost that privilege" the doctor nodded informing that he would send the orders.
"Oh, and Bruce, I want someone to bring the kid here, tomorrow after all the formalities are made. I want him to repeat the exam"
