Chapter 20 - Karma

Luke's POV

Jonny stormed over, his gun cocked in his hand and aimed it at the now paralysed Faye who lay on the floor.

"I thought you loved me!" Faye whispered.

I didn't have time to react, i barely had time to shut my eyes before the gunshot echoed the forest and an eerie silence spread like an airborne virus. I stood, frozen to the spot with my eyes shut for a while. If an enemy was to come out of the trees now, they could easily take me out. But i don't care. An almost silent sob could be heard in front of me.

"How could you?" Abbie whispered through the tears at Jonny. I slowly opened my eyes and refused to look down. I want to remember Faye as the lively Barbie from school. This image will haunt me if i see it, so i'd rather not... I looked over to Abbie, her eyes reddening, glaring angrily at Jonny. My gaze moved over to him, who stood smugly next to me.

"What you so happy about?" I turned my nose up at him.

"She was practically dead anyway..." He shrugged like there was no issue. Abbie and i exchanged confused glances. Why didn't he care?

"Did you hear what she whispered?" I said with an eyebrow raised. "I thought you loved me? Who was that aimed at?" This viral silence crept over us all again. We all exchanged glances before Jonny broke the silence.

"Shall we get a move on? Or you want to end up like her?" He snapped walking ahead of us like a child in a tantrum. It's been seconds and he's sounding like she was some sort of burden. I shook my head and sighed, putting a comforting arm around Abbie and walking with her. In my head i prayed for Faye; I prayed that she would forgive me for not protecting her enough to get shot, for not being able to change her state and make her better. I prayed she would be safe in heaven and would look down on us and protect us as we tried with her...

"How could he?" Abbie said, sounding like a broken record playing the same part over and over again. I couldn't bare to look at her, knowing how sad she would have been. It was only then that it dawned on me - Faye was shot because i was aiding Abbie. I glanced down at her leg, the camouflage pattern now looking like it was dyed red.

"Abbie, stop a minute, lets get that leg sorted..." I say sympathetically, noticing a limp.

"No, i'm fine. Lets just get this over with. I want this war over, i want to go home and i want to settle down with a man, have babies and be a housewife with some stories to tell." I thought it strange that she spoke like this. Maybe the sudden loss of Faye when she had a whole life to lead has sent Abbie a little crazy...

"Abbie, i'm being serious... You need to-" My sentence was cut short by a single gunshot. Abbie looked over to me, and we decided to see where that noise came from. Walking further into the wood, we finally came upon Jonny, standing with his gun drawn and his hand shaking. I looked further on to see a guy laying dead up against a derailed train. That must have been there for a long time as it had weeds, vines and trees growing through it.

"This used to be where the government had equipment transferred to us. Using this train." Jonny said, reminiscing. "We'd say we were out of ammo, a call would be made, less than 24 hours later one of us would walk here and take it off the train..."

"Well the only thing it's giving us is a hiding place..." Abbie said monotonously. "They'll either jump out of there, or force us in there." She shrugged. It was almost as if she had given them an idea, as there was suddenly heavy gunfire and we ran straight at the train as we fired, jumping into the train. Abbie let out a yelp as she hit the cold ground of the train. After a quick look around, my instant thought was this was the train version of that TV show 'Lost'. When they found buildings and planes from years ago, mainly decorated with vines and bug faeces... This was the same. The floor was covered in roots, the seats were split and had sprouting plants and weeds coming out of them, the windows barely containing the pressure from the shrubbery growing around it.

"What do we do now?" I shouted, expressing my frustration by kicking one of the chairs.

"Fight our way out?" Abbie said. "Unless you want to sit in here all day?" We looked over at each other, then at Jonny awaiting his answer. A smash of one of the windows caught us off guard and we all lay flat on the floor. A hissing sound followed soon after. It was a smoke grenade. We kept our heads down and crawled along the floor like toddlers, before pushing ourselves along the floor on our stomachs like babies. We reached a set of doors, but they were shut. Every set of doors we reached had been blocked off in some way, and the strength of this grenade was starting to show. My eyes began to water and blur, my lungs began to burn and my throat close up as if i was having an allergic reaction. I stumbled around, desperate for a way out, even standing up in the hope i could see something, but i was quickly pulled back to the floor.

"Stay down!" Abbie hissed at me. I couldn't see her, my eyes were as tightly shut as i could make them, but i could tell by her tone she was serious. She grabbed my hand with hers, intertwining our fingers. "Crawl with me." She whispered and i suddenly felt a tugging on my arm. I crawled wherever the tugging took me and after a good few seconds, which felt like minutes, i was suddenly  pushed forward, where i landed on some roots. Fresh air suddenly hit me and i took huge breaths in to try and clear my lungs. It burnt more at first, having my lungs fill with clean and poisoned air, but after a while i was fine and slowly opened my eyes, my vision still blurry as if i had conjunctivitis. Where was Abbie? She'd pulled me away and out of the train, so why was she not here? I desperately blinked and wiped my eyes, i needed to find her so i needed to see. My vision finally cleared and without hesitation or worry for my own safety i jumped back into the train, crawling along on my belly. My heart was racing and i was thinking of all the reasons why she hadnt come out of the train, i made myself worry. I crawled and crawled, the clean air being stolen from me again. I shut my eyes in the hope i could feel about, but i could hear an argument.

"She was talking about you!" Abbie yelled, a large weight suddenly hitting the floor near me.

"Get over it! It didnt mean anything to me!" Jonny said back, his voice sounded so close i'm sure i could have held my arm out and touched him.

"You and Faye? Why couldnt i see it before?" My stomach dropped and my heart felt like it froze.

"It doesnt matter! She's dead now anyway!" He exclaimed harshly.

"Oh just get away from me! You sicken me!" Abbie screamed and walked towards me, she was obviously so annoyed, she didnt even care about the fact she was arguing in a train coach we almost died in minutes before. I thought it was better if she didnt know i'd heard that argument, so i got up and ran forwards, hoping i'd reach that crisp, refreshing air again and in no time at all i was running on thin air and fell back into the vines i had fallen near before. "I hope you die!" She shouted and slammed the door as she jumped down next to me.

"Abbie?" I played dumb.

"Hey!" She bent down next to me. "You alright?" I opened my eyes and a face trying to hide sadness greeted me.

"Yeah i'm fine. Where's Jonny?" I sat up and Abbie helped me to stand.

"That door slammed behind me. He's trapped in there..." She shrugged, lying blatantly.

"And the door wont open?" I suggested.

"No." She said, pretending to look sad. A sudden bang on the now closed door made me jump and i shot a look over to see Jonny banging against the door we'd escaped from.

"Let me out of here!" He shouted, punching at the glass. He coughed and spluttered, his eyes red raw.

"It wont open!" She shouted back, a smug look on her face.

"Fuck you Abbie!" He shouted back. "Luke, open this fucking door!" I began to walk over to it but Abbie grabbed my wrist.

"Leave him." She said sternly. I had never seen that look before, but it was the look in her eyes that said 'i want to see him suffer'.

"Sorry, did i miss something here?" I looked around confused, pretending i hadnt heard the argument.

"Open this door!" Jonny shouted again, kicking and banging the door, but Abbie's grip on my hand just tightened.

"Go die, Jonny. Go and see Faye again!" Abbie shouted, spitting at the door.

"I hope you die a lonely, painful death Abbie..." He snarled before walking away from the door, back into the smoke-filled coach. Abbie let go of my hand instantly, but fell to her knees and covered her face.

"I can't take this any more!" She sobbed.
