Abbie’s POV

In one of the most awkward silences we’d ever encountered together, we travelled in this truck to the field where we were told the war was taking place. In World War’s they built trenches, underground bunkers and everything to protect them… What were we going to have? Hiding behind trees and hoping they’re a terrible shot is about as much as I can imagine! I doubt they’ve set up trenches and wired fences.

“Hold on!” The driver suddenly shouted as he swerved the car to the right as a rocket flew over the trees and hit the ground near us. The sound of the rocket exploding rang in my ears and the car shook. We tipped over onto two wheels but the driver managed to gain control and push the truck back onto four.

“Oh my God! I can’t do this! I just can’t!” Faye panicked and began shaking with fear. “We almost died and we’re not there yet!” I pushed the ‘unlock’ button for my seatbelt and clambered over to her, kneeling in front of her.

“Faye… Calm down…” I said, soothingly.

“Calm down?! We just got blown up!” She over exaggerated. I grabbed her hands and held them in mine.

“Faye… We’re not there yet. It’ll be fine. We’ll all look out for each other, ok? Jonny’s done this before and he’s fine!” I didn’t know if I was making her feel better, but simply voicing my feelings made me believe what I was saying.

“We’ll look after each other?” She questioned, looking between my face and our hands clasped together.

“Of course. I’ll look after you!” I smiled sympathetically at her.

“Ok…” She nodded, wiping away the few tears that fell.

“Watch out!” The driver shouted again, this time swerving to the left to avoid another explosion. The sound rung my ears again as I flew across the truck and bashed into the door, a shooting pain flying through my left arm. Mud and grass splattered on the windscreen and windows, the driver struggled to steady the vehicle and it tipped on its side, sending me tumbling across the seats again as the windows smashed on impact. I tumbled past Jonny but stopped suddenly; Luke had grabbed hold of me by my waist and was desperately clinging on to me to stop me falling out of the windows.  I turned round and wrapped my arms round him and his seat so he didn’t need to waste as much energy, but the pain was still radiating in my left arm. The car skidded along the road for what felt like an eternity and all of us remained frozen in fear as the car finally hit a tree and came to a halt. I slowly climbed out of the car and helped the others as they clambered out, shaking.

“Holy shit…” Luke exclaimed as his legs gave way and he fell to the floor, his back up against the car.

“Welcome to the warzone!” Jonny laughed, though it sounded more like a terrified, nervous laugh.

“What do we do now?” Faye looked around. We were in the outskirts of a field, but who knows where we actually were; we could be in enemy territory for all I know! Jonny climbed back up and leant in the car, pulling out a radio. The only person who had a radio was the driver…

“Hello?” He said into the radio, but static greeted us. He fiddled about with it, twisting and pressing things. “Hello?” There was static again. We all sat with our backs up to the car. This was going to be a long day. I began to check my guns, making sure they were all ready and loaded. The others observed me and took note, doing the same. We sat, staring up at the sun, in silence. All I could think of was what I’d said to Faye. ‘We’ll look after each other’ I’d told her, but I couldn’t even guarantee us making it safely to the other recruits! Who knows if we were going to make it into the war, we were almost blown off the road twice just trying to get there! I was suddenly drawn from my thoughts at the sound of a branch breaking from the trees behind us. I pulled out my pistol and cocked it, standing up behind the car and aiming my gun into the woods. If anyone was going to come out here and try and kill me, I’d put up a fight! A recruit suddenly appeared from the trees and stumbled towards us.

“Oh thank goodness you’re alright! I heard the explosion and thought you guys were dead!” He wiped his brow with his sleeve. “Come on! Follow me!” he waved us over and ran back into the woods. Without hesitation, we all ran with him. It could have been a trap, he could have been from the other government, but right now I didn’t even care; I just wanted to get out of the road!

***

We’d met the team, we’d been checked over by the medics and we were already in battle. I wasn’t ready for this. Adrenaline pumping we were ushered off into the makeshift trenches they’d dug in this picturesque field. My childhood memories flash back of me and my friends running around this field playing with a Frisbee, or a football, having picnics and meeting just to sit and talk in the sunshine… Now it was a baron wasteland… There were trenches dug as far as I could see, mounds of dirt piled up to stop them running at us, trees blown out of the ground, craters in the ground. It looked horrible.

“You four take to the woods, I think some of them are camping in the trees!” A person ordered us. I have no idea who, but they seemed bossy so I nodded. The four of us checked our guns and ammo, picked a gun to walk with and slowly walked into the forest.

“Jonny and Luke keep an eye out in the tree tops. We’re looking for snipers. Faye, you and I will look ground level. Ok?” I ordered.

“Oh God!” Faye cried out. “It begins now.” I observed her walking, her gun shaking violently in her hand.

“Faye!” I whispered. “Calm down. We’ll be fine!” We slowly walked further into the woods.

“You take the right side of the trees, I’ll take the left.” Luke said to Jonny, who nodded in response. Faye and I walked ahead of them, scoping the area for the enemy. There must be someone here! The deathly silence made me nervous, my stomach was training to be the next Olympic gymnast by the feel of it. Any branch that cracked, any bird’s tweet made us on edge thinking it was a person coming to end our lives.

“I don’t think anyone is-” Faye began, stopped suddenly by the sound of a gunshot echoing through the woods. A sudden pain shot through my leg and I collapsed onto the floor. I let out a yelp and looked down to see my thigh covered in blood.

“Ah shit!” I mumbled to myself as I breathed in and out heavily. Luke put his arms under my arms and pulled me behind a tree, sitting me with my back up against the tree trunk. I heard more gunshots and tried to move.

“No! Stay there!” Luke ordered as he ran back out to the pathway and fired his gun a few times. I could hear branches cracking and breaking before a thud of something heavy hitting the floor.

“What the hell were you doing?” I heard Luke shout. “That was your side and you missed him!”

“Sorry! I didn’t fucking see him!” Jonny shouted back.

“Even after he shot Abbie?” Luke shouted but there was no response.

“Guys? Help me!” Faye screamed. “I can’t move!” I could hear the panic in her voice and, ignoring the pain, I pulled myself along the floor to her, lying face down on the ground.

“It’s alright! I’m here!” I said, checking her over. Luke ran over to us both.

“I told you not to move!” He said, angrily.

“I needed to help her!” I raised my eyebrows to emphasise my seriousness.

“I can’t move!” Faye squealed again. We looked over her legs, arms, her head, her spine… Oh shit…

“He’s shot her in the spine, to paralyse her.” Jonny said from 10 foot away, leaning against a tree trunk like nothing was wrong. I glared over to him. Why isn’t he trying to help her? “There’s nothing we can do for her…”

“No! There must be something!” I cried out. I looked down to Faye, her tears staining the ground a darker brown.

“We can’t do anything! Unless you’ve invented something to un-paralyse someone?” He said in a sarcastic tone.

“Cut the crap, Jonny. Enough with the sarcastic shit!” Luke snapped. “At least we want to help her!”

“Oh I can fucking help her alright!” Jonny said, pushing himself away from the tree and walking towards us. He pulled out a pistol and cocked it, aiming it at Faye’s head.
