Chapter Twenty

Peter followed the light for a good twenty to thirty minutes before doubting that the light led anywhere. He believed he was hallucinating, seeing things that weren't there. His mind traveled a hundred miles an hour, wondering what else this light could do.

"Where are you taking me?!" He called to the light. The light paused near a chasm. "Okay, this is ridiculous! You know I have other things to do than follow a piece of light!" the light hovered over the chasm. Peter sighed. "My ex-friends are planning to summon the devil and I'm over here following a damn light."

Watch your language, a voice whispered, Peter did a double take. I saved you from that predicament. Peter opened his mouth when the light formed into a beautiful woman. His mouth dropped open. Things were moving in his head, and here was this beautiful woman with flowing red hair and a white dress. I know you have a lot of questions, but I can only answer and speak with you for a limited time.

"Who are you?" Peter asked. "Are you some sort of angel?"

The woman gave a soft giggle and covered her mouth as if trying to be polite.

My dear child, my brother sent me to check on you, she answered.

"So an angel?" Peter repeated. "What brother?"

Why, the same angel who was with Ezra at the time of speaking to the angel conduit.

"Michael?"

No, silly. Gabriel. Anyway, I've already spoken to Althea. She thinks that I was a spirit.

"If you aren't a spirit, then what are you?" Peter questioned.

The girl remained quiet. Peter thought maybe he was imagining things, but the girl still stood in place.

I am many things, Peter, the girl said. But amongst those, I am not what you would call 'of this world.' I am merely an omen, something that all people must be wary about. Peter began to say something. However, the girl held up her hand. Not a death omen, but an omen of what's coming. What your friends are doing will bring about the end of the world—not that you know about it, since you were one of those who wanted to summon that thing to this planet, but you know: you live, and you learn.

Peter thought about it for a few minutes until he started putting things together and his eyes grew wide. If the girl was correct, then what he did nearly brought the end, and that also meant he had to pick a side.

*~*~*

"Where have you been?!" Abigail exclaimed. She was angry and worried that something might have happened to Althea.

Althea hadn't realized that they were gone later than she expected. She glanced over at Ezra, who was sitting on her bed and listening to everything that was going on.

Althea sighed and turned back to her friend. She didn't want to argue or fight. Abigail hated that. All Althea could think about was that spirit she saw. At least she thought it was a spirit. The vibe seemed different now that she thought about it; sure there was an intense chill that spread throughout her body, but that could have been her imagination.

"I know what you're thinking, Abigail," Althea said. "And I understand that this whole situation involving spirits, angels and demons is, well..."

"That is not what I was talking about," Abigail said. "For once, can't you at least try not to run off on me? I was worried about you. I know that my motherly side is coming out, but the thought that we're dealing with otherworldly things is a lot for someone like me to take in."

"In our defense," Ezra said, finally speaking. "We were on our way back, but Althea got sidetracked."

"Sidetracked?" Abigail asked.

"I saw this girl. She was down by the pond. It was like she needed to warn me about something," Althea explained. "So, I followed her and learned a few shocking things."

"Such as?" Abigail asked.

"If we don't stop the Servants of Evil, then we're talking about the end of the world. And not like zombies and shit, but death and destruction everywhere we go."

"What should we do?"

"We find Peter and figure out where the rest of them are hiding," Ezra chimed in.

*~*~*

Ezra wished he had said nothing because now Althea and Abigail were dead set on searching for the Servants. He knew where they were. He didn't know which part, but if he could find Peter, then maybe he'd be able to get word to the girls and tell them where the Servants were hiding. Of course, he knew all about Melissa; she seemed to be everywhere, and judging from the history Althea and Abigail had with Melissa, it was clear that they'd be enemies. Ezra thought maybe it would be best if the girls stayed where they were and he went to find Melissa, but that would be what the dicks would want.

"Ezra?" Althea said, forcing him to snap out of his thoughts.

"Huh?" Ezra responded.

"Are you okay? Are you even listening?" She asked.

"I'm fine. I've been thinking, Althea, I believe that it's best you don't get involved with them," Ezra suggested.

"Ezra, you can't be serious!" Althea exclaimed. "If you're thinking about going after them, you'll end up captured all over again."

"But if you go, we'll end up having the same problem. You'd be falling right into their trap!" Ezra said, his voice rising. "Look I've messed up twice already and I can't mess up all over again. If something happens to you on my watch, things will get worse. I'd lose my wings and become fallen. I made a promise that I would let nothing happen to you."

"Um, do I get a say in this?" Abigail said, but Ezra and Althea turned toward her.

"No," they said.

Abigail held up her hands and stepped away.

"I'll leave you two to talk," Abigail suggested. "Please don't fight."

Abigail walked out of the room, leaving Ezra and Althea alone. Ezra prepared himself in case Althea tried to talk her way to going along. Most people wouldn't risk their life to stop evil from taking over. They would turn the opposite way.

"Ezra, I know you're looking out for me, but I can handle myself," Althea said.

"Right, but you don't get it. If you go, then that's risking your life," Ezra said.

"Please, you got to let me go with you. If you don't, I'll still follow you."

Ezra hesitated. He was ready for Althea to plead for her to go but it was hard for him. So many things happened before, and he didn't want a repeat of anything. But know that Althea wouldn't stop until she went along, he might as well allow her to go. But he wasn't planning to let her go alone.

"Do you have to be this stubborn?" Ezra asked.

Althea's mouth twitched into a smile, and her eyes twinkled with excitement. "Call it a gift. So, what do you say?"

"Fine. But we're sticking together."
