Chapter 16
Rowan's food slid out of his mouth and Isabel quickly wiped it up. A waitress walked bye, giving a small wave to the two kids sitting alone in the booth.
"That's Cammie..." Isabel told Rowan, even though he was more captured by his mac and cheese. "She was mommies friend..."
Rowan gurgled a little and went in for another spoonful. Isabel smiled but with a little bit of sadness. "Do you remember Mommy?"
Rowan munched on his slimy dish and Isabel thought if he actually did remember her. Or him. Did he think back to memories with them?
Isabel knew this wasn't the right time to think about it. This wasn't a sad time. She shouldn't be thinking about them. It had been seven months. She had to move on at some point. No point dragging it on.
She was meant to be happy. She was meant to make herself happy. It was a happy time. They were celebrating.
"YO!"
Isabel eyes came back in focus and she smiled as her older brother walked into the busy diner. Before even being able to sit down he was greeted by three waiters and the manager Andy.
"Hey! How'd it go then?" Isabel asked as Callum finished talking to the fifth person that had greeted him on his arrival.
"Great! Awesome! Everyone's super cool and...they know about Rowan so i'm working good shifts..." Callum nodding noticing Isabel was really listening.
"Look i know its not a big COA job but it's something, right?" He grinned at her, making her smile.
"Its great Cal!" Isabel told him in all honestly. "And you know if we're stuck on money then ic an always get a job to-"
"No no we're not stuck with money...i just thought it was about time i get a job...a real job..." Callum said then thanked the waiter for his fries.
"What about construction? You loved it!"
"Construction got me in trouble Bel! It's best i stay away from it..." Callum noticed she was a bit distracted and he knew exactly why.
"So no news, huh?" He gave a begging Rowan a frie as Isabel messed with the ring of water on the table.
"I'm not waiting for him to call..." Isabel eyes met Callum and she gave him a sad look. "If he doesn't have the decency to stay goodbye and i'm gonna have the decency to care..."
"Yo! Jake! Yo Jake man! Jake!"
Jake's brown eyes fluttered opened in a squint as a tall black guy stood over him. "Look man my moms gonna be up soon so you need to move..."
Jake groaned as he struggled off the make-shift bed he had made on the floor the following night. He squinted at his friend. "I'm up. I'm up."
"Oh and hey look man, my mom starting to notice stuff so you can't stay here no more..." The dude through a t-shirt at a shirtless Jake.
"Mannnnn...." He threw on the t-shirt and shagged his hair in place.
"I'm sorry dude...i know things are tough right now for you but..."The guy said but Jake stopped him by slapping his hand.
"It's all good man. It's all good.." But all was not good. Jake had no plan B. Or C. Or D. Or E. Jake gathered his stuff around the room.
"Oh and hey man, Keith called. He was ringing all morning." Jake's friend informed him as Jake stood at the window.
"Thanks man." And he leapt out the window.
Keith was a new friend of Jake's. A bad kind-of-friend. He had Jake doing small jobs for him and they weren't what you call good.
Jake was clever enough to know he was heading down a dark alley but to be honest, he didn't know what else to do with himself.
College was an aim of Jake's all his life but in recent weeks it seemed less and less important. And he knew that time for applying for colleges was coming to a close and maybe he would change his mind.
As Jake walked down the street at 6 am, he wondered if he could waltz back into his house. Say hi to his siblings, without it being a big deal.
But then he remembered his siblings were dramatic and wouldn't let him back in until he turned back into the good pumpkin he was before.
Callum surfed through the pile of boxes in the attic. "Aahhhh!" Callum screamed as a box hit him in the back as he backed out of the attic.
Callum stomped down to Isabel's room where she sat ding maths homework. An usual sight. "We need to clean this house. Like ASAP!"
"Don't look at me."
"Whatever...oh i forgot to tell you, we might be needing Jake to make a speedy recovery because i can't keep rescheduling this counselling meeting"
As part of the arrangement, The Elliot family had to attend 30 counselling sessions in the year following their parents death. It was pretty much torture in a room.
"Whatever...i'm tryna' study..."
Callum frowned finally noticed Isabel was actually studying instead of fake studying, like she always did. In fact it's what he had always done too."Your actually studying?" He stepped closer.
"Yup...maybe it's the disappearance of my brother and ...friend..." She hesitated "But i can bury all of my problems with books and notes..."
"That's not healthy...and why we need the session..." Callum added in and left her to her...studying.
Callum strolled down to the ground floor of the house and just as he was about to sit down, felt a buzz in his trousers.
"Hello?"
"Hi, Is this Callum? It's Lizzy..." And Callum's face went stiff and cold.
Lizzy.
And Lizzy was always followed with...
"I'm here with JAMES!" She yelled into the phone and it sent shivers down Callum's spine. All the memories flooded back and he cursed a million times at himself for answering the phone.
Lizzy and James were Callum's cousins. They were on his mom's side and lived all the way in Melbourne, Australia. Lucky for Callum.
Lizzy and James had always been very kind to the Elliots but they were some what of a required taste.
Lizzy was a milk maid. Literally, she miked cows for a living and dated some weird life guard that actually liked one direction.
James was a business owner. A not very successful one as his last three businesses had got into debts and yet he still hadn't realised no one needed a business dedicated to sheep clothes.
They were the relatives you laways avoided at the holidays and hoped to gos they had lost your number. But with James havinga photgraphical memory, the Elliots were in luck.
"We're just ringing to call you that becuase we're spending thanksgiving with mom..." Callum breathed a sugh of relief. Thanksgiving with James and Lizzy was a whole other story.
"We're gonna come visit you guys NEXT WEEK!!!" She shrieked and cheered and Callum heard a excited James in the backround.
"Next week? Wow? That's pretty soon...." Callum cursed and cursed even more. Why did he pick up the phone.
"I know i know...a little short notice but we really wnated to see our favourite cousins over in the great state of america..." Lizzy giggled. God her laugh was annoying.
"Have you watched the new Lizzy? It ain't so great no more..."Callum was being serious but Lizzy laughed at him.
"Comedian. Like always Callum. Well, i hope your all ready for us to land. Now we're only staying threes days"
YES.
"But i bet we can fit in everything needed in those three wonderful days. Now will be arriving next Thursday and we'll need someone to..." And Callum zoned out.
Isabel had take the bus to the garage. It was the one a bit outside of Isabel's comfort zone but she was in search of something. Someone more like.
"Ummmm hello?" Isabel had waited five minutes, watching the man under the car and decided she had to say something.
The man rolled out and Isabel recognised him straight away. Long narrow nose and skinny figure but still had the most amazing brown eyes. Like his.
"Hello sunshine, how can i help?"
"I need to know where Cegs is." Isabel crossed her arms tightly and narrowed her green eyes at the spineless man.
"Cegs? What are you pregnant?" He galnced at her flat stomach and rethought. He soon recognised Isabel for who she really was. "You're one of Cegs friend's, aren't you?"
"Where is he?" Isabel ignored him and got straight to the point. He had been gone a week. She's been callinga and knocking on his door all week.
"No no wait, you're one of the Elliot kids he's always hanging around with?"
"I'm Isabel Elliot, you met me when i was 1 now where is Cegs gone?" Isabel never enjoyed the mans company as she always felt very uncomfortable in his presence.
He sat on the rib of the car. "Ah who knows where that one goes...he's always popping in and out...sure he's a meat head.."
"You're his dad. You're suppose to know where he is. He didn't leave a note?"
"Look Missy the last time my son told me where he was going was when he was in 3rd grade when his mother disappeared...." He snapped at her.
"Well if he calls, here's my number." She gave it too him quickly although he tried catching her hand.
"See you later darling..."
Cegs outside in the bitter cold. His back leaned against his jeep as he wathce dthe wide gates roll open.
Doors flashed and beeps were heard but Cegs was positions far away. Not too far away to notice the men walking out of the fenced box.
Cegs didn't even after to look twice when recognising Pax. He was the youngest one coming out and tallest too.
He had gotten a new sleeve so now both arms were covered in ink and he carried a black duffel bag on his shoulder.
As the other inmates scattered, Pax looked around the road. Trying to stop any of his old members but they were long gone.
In the distance Pax soon spotted the truck he had left Cegs when he went inside. He grinned and began to walk over.
Cegs got more nervous with every step Pax took towards him. Cegs began to walk towards him too. When within speaking range Pax yelled " HEY BROTHER!"
"Ye, hey brother..." Cegs muttered as he swung a right hook right into Pax' jaw. He stumbled onto the ground and looked up at his little brother. "Welcome home"
