Chapter 19

I have been hunting with Dad and Elon since we were both really little. Before that it used to be Etan. Elon was too young back then though so he couldn't come. We did go hunting once, all of us together; Mom, Dad, Etan, Elon and I. We used to hunt monsters though, not just anything.

Later on April and her family moved to our part of town and our parents became close friends so they came with us whenever we went hunting. Etan was gone by then. I had always put all my trust in my big brother so when April came along I immediately became friends with her. Our friendship grew and soon we were inseparable. Elon also developed a little crush on my best friend. She was pretty popular in our school but when she discovered she was bisexual people somehow saw her in a different light. That all continued and our little problems seemeed as big as the universe for us until when the revolution broke out, and you already know the rest of the story.

Then let's just say I have some experience in hunting.

Walking through the woods right now reminded me of the time when we all went hunting together, as a family.

Adam had already awakened when I made it back and he asked a few questions. I told him I had tried looking for food and water but had found none. I also left Sekuum out. We set off shortly after.

It's not long till the city now. I saw the Rorarian River which means we're closer than I thought we were. This is good. It means I could get to the Resistance soon.

After a few hours we finally make it to the main road that leads to Mora and I finally find it time to lose Adam. I can't risk him following me in the city. But the problem is I can't seem to find a way to do it.

The main road is strangely vacant. It's usually full of traffic but now there's no one. It makes me think of things I shouldn't but I can't help it.

I try looking for opportunities to escape Adam but none show themselves.

As we get closer to the city we all become wary. I can even see the tension in Adam's shoulders.

Something isn't right.

Soon we're at the city walls. The gates are sealed and there's a guard at each side of it.

Adam grabs my arm and pulls me back into the bushes. Ven remains silent.

"What's going on?" I whisper to him and try to walk around him but he pulls on my arm and puts a hand to my mouth.

I seize my movement and stare wide-eyed at the gates. The Nex has probably got the city by now. That would explain the guards at the gates. I look up at the walls and find more guards looking around, patrolling.

Adam lets me go and I stand there staring at the walls. This is horrible, awful. If I can't get into Mora I can't find the Resistance. What if they already left? Of course they already left. They wouldn't just stay there when the enemy invaded the city.

I remain frozen to my spot.

What now?

Adam turns to me. "Go. Run. Now," He whispers, pushing me in the opposite direction of the guards. "The Venum will keep you safe." He looks at Ven and the little creature straightens up. "Go. Go before it's too late," Adam tells me with urgency.

I want to do as he says, to run, but I don't know where to go. Consurrexi is destroyed, Mora is invaded. What place is left for me to escape to? I don't know where the others are and I don't know anyone in the country. If I go away now, I will have to live in hiding for the rest of my life. I need to be smart about this.

If I leave right now I will have nowhere to go to. I will have to stay in the woods where no one can find me. If I stay, Adam might give me away if he had to. The guards might recognize me, know who I am. My father was one of the biggest traitors to them after all. But I can't run. I need to stay and fight. But what if it means my life? I'm no use to anyone dead.

I take a deep breath, having already made my decision.

I look at Ven and then turn to Adam. I will need his help.

I turn around and kneel in front of Ven. I put my hands on either side of his face. "You need to go little one. The city is no place for a Venum. They will kill you if they see you." He whines in response. I know he's scared. I nod at him with a reassuring smile. "Go. It'll be fine. We'll meet again someday."

The little creature looks at me doubtfully, and then turns to look at Adam and before turning away and disappearing into the deep woods.

I stand up and dust off my pants. I look at the city walls. Adam is doing the same. They might be in there and if so they will need all the help they can get.

"Let's go." I whisper to Adam and he turns to look at me with a frown.

"No. You're not going. They will kill you if they find out you're with the Resistance." He whispers back.

"They will never know." I whisper before starting to walk towards the gates.

As soon as I step foot out of the cover of the woods and the guards see me their hands drop to the handle of their swords. I don't know why they don't have guns but then again many creatures can survive gun shots but not being decapitated.

I hesitate. What if they're the 'shoot first, ask questions later' type of guards? I'm bare from any armor or weapons that would protect me.

I notice the guards on the walls stop to point their guns and bows at me too as soon as Adam falls into steps beside me. Don't they recognize him? Maybe they don't.

I am aware of the tension in the air. Today I either die or get inside the walls of the city. Still determination urges me to get closer, no matter the risk.

When we get close enough to the gates of Mora, one guard steps forward to question us.

"Who are you? What are you?" Right. He can see my mismatched eyes.

"I-" I don't know what to say. As my words get stuck in my throat Adam responds for me.

"Step aside, she's with me." Adam steps in front of me.

The guard narrows his eyes. "And who might you be?"

Adam blinks once and his eyes change color to a blinding silver. He tilts his head to the side in a mocking manner as all the color drains from the guard's face.

"Sir! I- We never thought you would come back!"

Adam's silver eyes narrow into small slits. "Open those gates and let us pass."

"But sir..."

"If you don't obey me you will face the consequences."

The guard gulps in fear. "Yes sir." He turns back to his post, yelling at one of the other guards up on the wall to open the gates and, surely, they start opening after a few seconds as I stand there gaping at the sight of the empty city.

The guards on either side of the gate bow down as Adam grips my wrist and pulls me along with him.

The gates of the city close again behind us, leaving any chance of freedom outside.

I can't help but be scared.

Am I really ready for this?

I scoff at my own thought.

Like I have a choice now.

I turn back to look at the city. It's not in a bad shape, fortunately, but there's almost no one around. In fact the only people around are guards, patrolling the area.

Where is everyone?

I feel Adam pulling me with him when I suddenly come to a stop and remember what he did back at the city gates.

"Why did you help me?" I ask him.

He doesn't respond at first which makes me think he didn't hear me or he doesn't want to answer but before long he responds. "I don't know what got into you to that made you take this decision but at least I can pay you back for not leaving me to die when I was injured."

I frown. He already showed me the way when I had no idea where to go. He's already paid me back. But I don't tell him that. I don't want to find myself in a dungeon, for real this time.

"You're an idiot."

A shiver runs down my spine and my eyes widen at his words. That voice, that tone, those words, I know them all, memorized them, thanks to my nightmares a few months ago.

Adam turns to look at me when I fall silent, still gripping my wrist.

"What you just did was stupid. You're stuck here now with nowhere to go. You can't go back out again, unless you can fly or teleport yourself out, which I don't think you can," Well I do have wings. "You can't use anything in your name because they will find you and take you into custody. In fact you need to forget your name until you get out of here; if you're lucky enough, alive. You just sealed your fate." His silver eyes turn back to normal with a blink, back to the deep blue, almost black from the darkness in them. "From now on you either live on the streets or get captured. Congratulations," he bows his head, sarcasm dripping from his tone.

I scowl at him. "And what do you know about having a hard time?"

"More than you might think," he snaps at me before turning around and resuming his walk to the center of the city and I follow him close behind.

I take a deep breath. Time to push my luck.

"I did save you from dying you know."

He comes to a stop but keeps his back to me.

I take that as my cue to continue. "The least you can do is to help me."

He turns to me, his gaze snapping to mine. "I've already helped you on your suicide mission to enter the city. I'm no longer helping you."

"But I ..."I try to argue but I'm cut short when he talks.

"No. Don't act like I didn't already pay back my debt. I already accompanied you on the way here and helped you through the gates. From this moment on you're on your own. I don't know you. You don't know me."

"I didn't need your company on the way. You insisted on staying," I mutter underneath my breath. "Plus I had it handled back at the gates," I lie through my teeth.

His gaze remains on me. His narrowed dark blue eyes stare into my mismatched ones as if searching for something in my soul. I stand my ground, staring right back, unblinking.

In the end he sighs in defeat and I smirk. "Come," he snaps at me before turning away and continuing on his way to the city center. I happily obey.

I stay a few steps behind as I follow him through the streets, lost in my own thoughts.

I try figuring out what he is. I don't exactly know Supernatural whose eyes flash silver. There are probably many that could but I wouldn't know. I've tried staying away from all of them. The only one close enough to me is April, my best friend, who's a Werewolf. Her eyes have never flashed silver though, not that I have ever seen at least.

I don't even know what Supernaturals are in the Nex. I know about the Demon and the Fallen and he could be both, even though the Demon I heard of was a female.

Is he a Fallen? Wouldn't he have killed me by now if he was?

Fallens are known to be really aggressive. They don't usually care about who it is, they just want to kill – much like I did when my power was at its full strength. They want revenge on what happened to them when they fell.

I once heard that their feathers get plucked out. Then the remaining feathers and their wings are set on fire and they are left to scream in agony for hours. Many lose their wings, becoming weaker and weaker until, when they are exiled, either they don't make it past a few days alive or they are immediately found and sent to Dark.

Dark is known to be an island far away in the Unknown Ocean. They say it's a portal for actual Hell. The sunlight never shines on the island, hence the name. It's also known that most of the dangerous Supernaturals go there when they die. No one has ever seen it and anyone who has et out on the ocean to find the damned island has never come back.

Fallens are one of many species that are kept there until the end of time.

Sometimes I feel bad for the Fallens but, then again, they are trying to destroy our world. There aren't many of them. Maybe 5 or 6 Angels fell from the Beginning until now.

I stare at Adam's wide shoulders. If he was a Fallen, there between his shoulder blades, should be a scar where his wings were burned. I don't remember seeing anything before but maybe I didn't pay attention. Then I remember the way he tensed when we heard those men talking about a Fallen in the Nex. Maybe he is a Fallen.

His shoulders tense under my gaze and he suddenly turns around and grabs my wrist, pulling me forward to walk next to him. He doesn't let go this time, making sure I stay at his side instead of falling behind again.

When we make it to the city center Adam leads us to the president's palace. It's big but not as big as it once was. It was a castle a long time ago, before the Flood, but now many parts of it have been destroyed and not much is left of it. I've never been inside, of course, the president used to live there and now the Nex.

I stop dead in my tracks making Adam stop with me.

He groans. "What now?"

"The Nex lives there now." I look at the palace with wide eyes.

"Yes. So?" He seems bored.

I frown at him. "I can't go there! They would recognize me and throw me in a dungeon or something."

"They won't recognize you."

"Yeah? How would you know?"

He raises an eyebrow. "I'm part of the Nex, remember?"

I narrow my eyes at him. "Yes, I remember well." How could I not? I still don't know why I trust him. Oh that's right, because I have no other choice. I take a deep breath to calm myself. "My parents were taken not long ago. If they recognize me, I'm done for," I whisper to him lowly.

"I've always been there when someone was taken or killed as punishment and trust me, if your parents were truly taken, then you look nothing like them. That means you won't be recognized." His voice is softer as he says it.

I frown. I've been told many times before that I look exactly like my Mother and I have my Father's eyes. Either Adam wasn't there when they were taken or... they weren't.

I feel tears fill my eyes. Then where are they?

I shake my head to get rid of the disturbing thoughts and the tears. I need to stay strong. Now is not the time to break-down Evin.

Adam holds a hand in front of me to take. "Trust me." I hesitantly do so. I need to do this. I need to do this. I need to find more information on the Nex and find out where the Resistance is right now.

I keep my head down to hide my eyes as we get closer to the tall doors of the palace, all closed. The guards step aside as soon as they see Adam's silver eyes and the doors open to a corridor that leads to a small garden with a path running through it and a well in the middle. There is no roof on top and the sun shines down on it. The flowers in there are of many colors and they catch my eye. There are little corridors running all around the garden with doors at the end of them, leading to different places of the palace and you could definitely watch the garden from the floors above through the windows. Where the garden is now situated used to be plain ground I think. If you look hard enough you could see that all the plants have grown through the cracks of the tiles in the ground. It's truly magnificent.

I want to stay there, staring at the small garden forever but Adam tugs at my wrist and pulls me with him towards a set stairs to the side.

He doesn't stop until we ascend a few floors and finally arrive in front of a door. He pushes it open and pulls me in with him, closing it behind us.

I look around and find myself in a huge bedroom. It doesn't feel like it's been lived in though.

"This is where you'll be staying for the time you're here. It's my room so no one will suspect anything," he says as I take a seat on the edge of the bed. "Go clean up," he nods to a set of doors behind me. "I'll find you some clothes and something for your eye," he mutters before opening the door and going out, locking it behind him.

I'm left in the unfamiliar room, in the heart of the enemy, no knowing what to do or where to go from here. I take a deep breath, missing the times when everything was simpler.

I stand up and look out of the window that overlooks the garden. The flowers sparkle in the sunlight, showing off the drops of rain that have gathered on each of their petals and leaves.

I look at the sky and notice the clouds starting to take over, blocking the sun. I take a deep breath. I feel overwhelmed by all this.

I can do this. I have to.

I can't help but wonder where the others are. Are they ok? I remember Amber and a few others staying behind to fight. Were they hurt? I hope not.

Then I think of Elon. I started all of this because I wanted to find him and I still have no clue as to where he is.

I close my eyes and lay my forehead against thewindow as the small drops of rain start falling slowly at first to the pourdown with all their might, the thunder and lightning accompanying theirsymphony.

Hey there!

There goes another chapter! I know everything is still a little confusing but it will make sense, trust me.

So I've started the editing process of this book so the updates might be a little slow. I'm going to try and make it less cringe worthy; working on the grammar and the plot a little more. But anyway, that's it.

Have a good day!

-Sam
