Chapter 18
Soon after I understand that the man is telling the truth and also that he's harmless, I get back to my log and sit on it, waiting for the others to return and trust me when I say as of yet it's been the most horrible and longest minute of my life. Sekuum has not left my side even for a second and has been talking nonstop. My ears hurt.
"Then I decided that it would be nice to make the Venums. I know I was cruel back then by my dear brother wanted to invade Kosmos and send the Angels back up to the Cloud so I had to stop him somehow. Plus, I know my Angels; if they were challenged they wouldn't take it easy. At all. They would go towards the enemy, swords drawn. Enon can't do anything to send them back now. Oh, and I did try making a lot of other monsters to keep him out. They're all around the Sun Walls. Wait until you hear how I suggested the Angels a way to keep everything out!" Does he have an off button? I really need it right now.
Even though his ranting is boring me to death, unconsciously I listen to his rant and keep everything he says in mind. Who knows when I would need such information? But consciously I'm bored out of my mind. I rest my chin on my palm and my elbow on my knees. I'd take the Fallen over the God.
I sigh and close my eyes to take a small nap.
"Eve!" Sekuum shouts and I jump.
I groan. "What?"
He doesn't respond. I turn to look at him and find him staring at the distance. I frown. What now?
His head snaps to me, his eyes filled with darkness and alarm. Now that makes me worried.
"What?" I ask again.
He takes a deep breath and starts to respond when suddenly Adam appears from behind the bushes, his arms filled with wood. I turn away from Sekuum and look at Adam.
He doesn't pay attention to me at first but then he sees me looking at him in alarm. He drops the load on the ground and settles next to it, trying to make a fire. "What?" He straightens and looks around. "What are you up to?" He looks at me with narrowed eyes. I don't move.
Isn't he going to ask about Sekuum?
I turn around to see if God is going to say something but find him gone. I look around but still can't find him.
"Evin?" Adam calls from behind me. "Evin. What is it?"
I turn to see him looking at me in distress.
I open and close my mouth a few times like a fish out of water but can't find the words to respond. Instead, some words get jumbled out. "I... he... there was... um... Sekuum..."
Adam walks towards me, frowning. He's worried. "Calm down. What happened?" He looks around. "Where's the Venum?"
"I..." I take a deep breath and try to calm down. Was that all part of my imagination? It couldn't have been right?
"I think Ven went hunting for something to eat." I finally say. I won't tell him about Sekuum until I'm sure what I saw was real. Right now I have some doubts.
Adam's frown disappears and he looks at me in amusement. "Ven?" he raises an eyebrow.
I frown. "Yeah." He chuckles and walks back to the pile of wood. I glare at his back. "What?"
He shakes his head. "Nothing," he says, still chuckling.
All I think about is the damned God. Where did he go? I need to find him. What if there's trouble?
Ven comes back a few hours later with an unrecognizable animal in his fangs. He throws it in front of me and steps back into the shadows. His fur takes the color of the night but I can still feel his eyes watching closely.
He had been distant during the road until here. He was always a few steps back as if he feared something. I certainly hope it's not me.
I take a look at the bloodied animal's body and a look at Adam. He looks at me with the same expression.
Ven hunted for us.
A few minutes later we cook the meat and start eating. Ven still hangs in the shadows. I pick a piece of the cooked meat and hold it out to him. He remains hidden.
I sigh. "Come on Ven. You need to eat." I hear a small whine and my eyes soften. "I will never hurt you."
The little creature steps out of the shadows slowly, looking between me and Adam with caution.
I look at the Fallen who's watching the scene carefully and then turn to Ven. "He won't hurt you either. Trust me."
His eyes hold my gaze for a few seconds before he finally steps forward and takes the piece of meat with his fangs that immediately come out and puncture it. I don't drop his gaze as he sits on the ground a few feet away from me. When he's finally sure that neither I nor the Fallen will attack him, he turns to his meal. I smile and turn back to mine.
I don't know why Ven fears us. Maybe they can sense what I am. The only thing I know right now is that I need to get to Mora as fast as I can. The road from here to the Capital would normally take a few days I think but I need to make it back in two days tops.
I will need to plan this out but I'll lose the Fallen on the way. It would be easier. I will probably need to say goodbye to Ven too. I don't think he'll be able to live in the city. Plus he must have family somewhere in the woods. I can't take him away from his home.
That night sleep doesn't come to me. As everyone lies down to sleep, I sit with my back against a tree trunk, close enough to the fire to stay warm and think about everything and nothing.
I think about everything that's happened in the last few weeks. It's funny that it was only a month ago that I was home with Elon, didn't know that Etan was still alive. I hadn't even tried to help to save my country back then. I just thought I would let others fight it out but what I didn't know was that innocent people often get caught in the middle.
Then I think about the night that changed everything: when Elon disappeared into the night, holding the sizzling mark on his arm. If that hadn't happened I wouldn't have accepted April's offer and I wouldn't have found Etan. Fate truly has a cruel way of giving us what we want.
After that, the night of the bombarding comes to my mind. It all happened so fast that I didn't even understand. Did the alarm go off? I don't remember. If so, though, why did so many people die? If not then why? Did someone disable it? It can only be disabled from the inside so does that mean someone betrayed us? What did truly happen? I don't even want to start thinking about what would've happened if I hadn't gone out that night.
I put my face in my hands and rub my eyes. I'm tired. We've been walking for a long time and I should get some sleep but no matter what I do I can't. I can't go to sleep. What if something happens when I'm sleeping? What if there's an attack? What if...?
"Evin?" I gasp and look up in alarm.
Kneeling in front of me is Sekuum, looking at me with a frown. My eyes widen but then I sniff and turn my head away. He disappeared into nowhere before and now he has reappeared. As many questions as I have, I can't bring myself to talk about anything.
"What is it Evin?"
"Evin huh?"
"What?"
"You're finally calling me Evin."
Sekuum seems to be thinking for a second, staring into the distance.
I take a deep breath. "Where did you go?"
He scratches his head. "What do you mean? I didn't go anywhere."
"Yes, you did. You just disappeared. Where did you go?"
Sekuum sighs. "You know I'm God right? Sometimes I need to go places, do something."
"Right." I sigh and stand up, dusting off my pants. There's still a few hours to sunlight but I would like to get ready and maybe find something to eat before we set off.
I look up at the trees around my for any fruit hanging somewhere but find nothing so I set off deeper into the woods. Sekuum follows with a frown.
"Where are you going?"
"To find food."
"It's dangerous this time of night. At least wake the Venum and take it with you."
I shake my head. "No. I can manage on my own."
Sekuum groans behind me. "Why are you so stubborn Eve?"
"Why do you call me Eve?"
He rolls his eyes. "Because Evin is boring. Eve is better."
I glare at him before walking away. I hear him sigh and follow in silence.
"So you're sure you're God?"
He chuckles. "Of course I'm sure."
"Then help me find food. Or better yet, make it appear out of nowhere. I would definitely like to see that happen," I tell him with a smug smile.
He sighs, closing his eyes and pinching the bridge of his nose. "It doesn't work that way."
"Then please do tell how does it work?" I frown at him.
"It's complicated. You wouldn't understand."
I roll my eyes. "Try me."
He let out a heavy breath but didn't say anything. I was starting to complain when I heard something. It was definitely the sound of water flowing and we haven't had water for days. If we were Human we would be dead by now.
My eyes widen and I grin. Let's get some water, shall we?
I follow the sound until I find the river; the color of the water so beautifully clear that you can't simply walk away. I get closer and kneel on the bank. God is this lucky. There aren't many rivers running through the country. There's only one that can be this close to the Capital and it's the Rorarian River; A tongue twist really. It runs through Mora and the woods until the boundaries of Imperium and Syrusia. Then it enters the other country and runs all the way to its Capital, Northan. Stranger name, I know but Syrusians have always had strange names for things. Plus they don't speak Imperial, their language is, you guessed it, Syrusian. Dad made me learn it when I was young. I'm not exactly fluent but I can communicate easily.
Syrusia is to the East of Imperium and we share a long border. Not the longest border though. The longest border would be with Lickon which is on the West of our country. What's interesting however is that the source of the Rorarian River is in the Notrix Mountains which is on the North-West of Imperium. Rivers from those Mountains go to the Cornylia Lake but not the Rorarian. This one comes straight from the Mountains and it's told to be poisonous.
Well as the story goes: there are apparently many Witches and Wizards who live in the Notrix Mountains; the most dangerous ones. They cast a lot of experimental spells and most of the failed ones go in the Rorarian River. The river runs throughout the country and everything about a few feet around it are all dead or poisonous as well.
It's just a story to scare the kids though I'm sure. I'm also sure that this river in front of me is the infamous river. Its poison is said to kill a Human in 3 minutes, a Supernatural in 3 and an Angel in 6 hours. No one knows for sure but many say it's true. We also have the Rose Bridge which is one of the biggest bridges in the country and it's big enough to connect one side of the river to the other. I've been there when I was young but it's been long. It was carefully built and completely warded so in case something bad happens it doesn't go down and take the people on it with it.
So right now as I extend my hand closer to the flowing water fear strikes within me. What if the rumors are true? What if it kills me? I'm not Human though, nor am I a Supernatural. Also definitely not an Angel so what will the effect of the water be on me? Will it kill me?
But it's just so clear. One gulp won't hurt.
I hesitate and that's when someone grabs my arm roughly and pulls me away from the river.
"What do you think you're doing?!" Sekuum shouts at me.
I look at him with a confused look, shaken.
He sighs. "That water could kill you Evin."
"I..."
"No! You will not get close to the damn thing ever again you hear me?" He grabs my shoulders and shakes me for good measure.
I nod and he lets go. God looks away and I look at the river. I notice that everything in a few feet from the bank is completely dead. Almost like it's been burned. The water still calls out to me though. It has this strange allure to it that it shouldn't.
Sekuum grabs my hand and pulls me in the other direction, sighing. "Come on. Let's go find some food for you, the Fallen and the Venum. You have a long way to walk in the morning."
And so I let him guide me away from the river but my gaze still remains on the water. I have a feeling this won't be last time I get so close to it.
So, that was weird. I'm cringing. *moment of silence* I'll go home.
Keep in mind that it will all be edited once I finish writing the whole book! TRUST ME
Thanks for reading!
