Chapter 148
After landing the Javelin, Alex led the way off the ship, chuckling in amusement at the looks on her fiancée's and sister's faces. This was the first time either of them had ever set foot on another planet.
"Wow. This place is amazing," Felicity said.
"Welcome to Supertown," Orion said. His welcoming expression disappeared when he noticed Felicity's armor. "Though we were not aware you would be bringing a Reach warrior here."
"She has no association with the Reach. Her scarab is off-mode, and we're keeping tabs on the Reach in case they come crawling back," Alex said, raising her ring toward him. "She's also my fiancée, so back off."
"Alex, sweetie, I love how protective you are, but let's not antagonize the son of Superman's greatest enemy—especially when he's also the adopted son of the people who rule this planet." Felicity grabbed Alex's arm and gently lowered it.
"It's quite all right. Orion could stand to have some sense and class knocked into him every once in a while," said a woman who could only be Highmother as she approached alongside Highfather.
"Mother. Father," Orion said.
"Orion, you of all people should know better than to judge someone because of her origins," Highmother told him. "Had circumstances been different, you would have been raised by your biological father and molded into one of the most dangerous forces the universe has ever seen."
Orion lowered his head. "Yes, Mother."
"Thank you, Mrs. Highmother," Felicity said. "But I have the scarab—or Khaji, as I call her—under control. We've reached an understanding, and neither of us has any interest in working for the Reach."
"Please just call me Highmother. And you and your compatriots are our honored guests. Superman is already a great ally and hero to our people and we are thrilled to welcome allies of his." Highmother said.
"Thank you. We're honored to be here and that you're taking the threat of Darkseid against our homeworld as seriously as we are." Alex said.
"I'd hoped that when we declared Earth as being under our protection that Darkseid would not risk violating our peace treaty with Apokolips by continuing to attack it. It appears that was false hope." Highfather said.
"That's what we're here to discuss." J'onn reminded them.
"The representatives from the Green Lantern Corp are set to arrive tomorrow." Orion said.
"I still don't understand why that's necessary when Alex can serve as the Lantern representative?" Karen asked.
"If Earth weren't one of the planets being represented at this summit, I would, but the Guardians think that I wouldn't be able to be impartial, since I'm also a member of the Justice League and I have to admit, for once they're right. We need Green Lanterns that aren't from Earth coming in to serve intermediaries." Alex explained, since while she had her issues with the Guardians and they grew by the day. One of the reasons she wasn't too upset about other Lanterns coming, since she had questions she was hoping they could answer.
Questions that were a result of her and Felicity's latest encounter with Victoria Kord, or as she was calling herself now, Red Lantern. Apparently green wasn't the only color power rings came in and since Hal was offworld for something he didn't tell her about, Alex hadn't had a chance to ask him what he knew about it.
"In the meantime, allow me to escort you to your quarters." Orion said, though it became clear that he still disapproved of having a Reach warrior on this planet, not to mention the two hawks, but with his mother's reminder about his own heritage in mind, he kept his thoughts to himself.
