Chapter 145

Due to how long it took for the signal to go through, some of the Leaguers, including Ice Maiden, Flash, Vibe, Batwoman, and several others, had already left the Watchtower. The only ones still present besides Supergirl were Superman, Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, and Batman.

"We really need to make some upgrades to that transmitter," Supergirl said as the transmission finally connected and the image of a man wearing a silver helmet appeared on the screen.

"Orion," Kara said, recognizing the New God immediately.

"Greetings, Kara Zor-El. I am pleased to see you have returned, for there is a matter that must be discussed immediately," Orion said.

Kara's expression immediately became more serious.

"Does this have to do with the matter we discussed over a year ago?"

"Indeed. Apologies for the delay, but it took us time to investigate your claims without Darkseid noticing, since New Genesis is still hesitant to break the treaty between us and Apokolips." Orion said.

"So, what did you find?" Kara asked.

"We discovered that Darkseid was in the early stages of combining his genetic code with yours. His intention was to create an heir possessing both Kryptonian abilities and the power of a New God."

"Could he do it again?" Bruce asked.

"No. Metron ensured that all records pertaining to your genetic material were erased. He also uploaded a self-replicating virus into Darkseid's systems that destroyed every backup we could locate."

"Could he obtain another sample?" Batman asked.

"In theory, yes," Orion admitted. "But he no longer possesses the knowledge necessary to continue the project. He would be forced to begin again from the beginning."

Kara folded her arms. "And if he does?"

Orion's eyes narrowed.

"Then New Genesis will consider the treaty broken." Orion said.

"Really? Earth isn't New Genesis territory either?" Kara asked.

"That is one of the other reasons for our delay. Highfather and Highmother have decided to invite a contingent of the Justice League here to New Genesis to discuss creating a formal alliance between our worlds." Orion said.

"I like the sound of that." Superman said and Kara nodded in agreement.

"Send all the necessary details and we'll send a contingent of the League to meet with you," Kara said.

Orion nodded.

"Sending the details now."

The transmission ended a moment later, leaving the Watchtower unusually quiet.

"Well, that's some good news," Alex said.

Kara nodded, though her expression remained thoughtful.

For over a year, she'd worried about what Darkseid might have been planning with the sample of her DNA. Now, for the first time, she could finally stop wondering.

"If he'd actually succeeded..." Kara began before trailing off.

Martian Manhunter studied her for a moment.

"You would have faced a difficult decision."

"Yeah." Kara folded her arms. "Because none of it would've been that child's fault."

The others nodded.

"No matter how they were created, they would've been innocent."

"And what would you have done?" Alex asked.

Kara sighed.

"I would've talked to Lena about taking them in."

That earned a few surprised looks.

"What?" Kara asked. "I'm not saying it would've been easy. It would've completely changed our lives, but if there was a kid out there who didn't ask to be brought into the world..."

"You couldn't just abandon them," Clark finished.

"Exactly."

Bruce gave a small nod of understanding.

"Trust me, Selina and I had a similar discussion before we had Helena and Damian. Taking in a teenager like Dick was one thing. Raising a baby is an entirely different challenge."

"That's what worries me," Kara admitted. "Lena and I just got married. We're still figuring out what normal married life even looks like."

A small smile appeared on Bruce's face.

"Then you're already ahead of most parents."

That earned a few chuckles from around the room.

"Still," Kara said, a smile tugging at her lips, "I think I'd rather spend the next few years focusing on my wife than chasing after a toddler with heat vision."

"Probably a wise decision," J'onn agreed.

"And fortunately," Alex added, "it sounds like you won't have to make that choice anytime soon."

Kara let out a relieved breath.

"No. Thankfully, that's one problem we don't have to worry about."

"So, who are we sending to this summit?" Clark asked.

"Sounds like a perfect mission for a Green Lantern to take point on. What do you say sis? You up for it?" Kara asked.

"As long as I can take Felicity, yes, since we can use the trip in the Javelin as time to plan our wedding." Alex said.

"Yeah, you really need to get a move on that so I know how big of a ceremony I'll be paying for." Kara said and Alex rolled her eyes at that.
