Chapter 3
Once again I was here, the cold metal pressed against my back, making me shiver involuntarily. My body was restrained by thick straps across my chest and legs, leaving me unable to move or escape. The sterile white walls of the room closed in on me, their smooth surface reflecting the harsh, glaring lights above. All around, the sound of humming machinery provided an eerie soundtrack to my predicament.
"Begin the experiment," a voice commanded from somewhere outside my field of vision. I couldn't see who it was, but their tone was detached, uncaring.
As if on cue, a sharp, searing pain shot through my body like a lightning bolt. It felt as though every nerve ending had suddenly caught fire, the flames licking at my insides with a ravenous hunger. I clenched my fists, my nails digging into the palms of my hands, while my teeth ground together so tightly that I thought they might shatter.
"Argh!" I cried out, my voice barely more than a whisper as the pain threatened to consume me. But I knew I had to endure, had to survive whatever twisted experiment they were putting me through. For some reason, despite the gaps in my memory, my instincts urged me to fight, to hold on.
My body trembled, sweat beading on my forehead as the pain continued to course through me, a never-ending tide of agony. I tried to focus on something, anything to take my mind off the torment. But all I could think about were the questions - why was this happening to me? What had I done to deserve such a fate?
"Stay strong, Cain," I muttered to myself, drawing on the little strength I had left. "You can make it through this."
"Remember to breathe," I told myself, trying to focus on anything other than the pain that threatened to consume me. But it was everywhere - in my bones, beneath my skin, even in the air around me. The cold metal table beneath me provided no comfort, only amplifying the sensation of agony.
"Subject 12 is showing increased levels of distress," I heard a woman's voice say, her tone clinical and detached.
My thoughts raced with unanswered questions: Why was this happening to us? What did they hope to gain by subjecting us to this kind of torture? I glanced around the sterile white room and caught sight of the other children who shared my fate, their faces contorted with pain, eyes brimming with fear and confusion. We were all just lab rats to them, pawns in some twisted game.
"I'm increasing the voltage," the woman said, her voice cutting through my chaotic thoughts. My heart sank as I anticipated another wave of torment.
"Please, don't," I whispered, but she paid me no mind. Her name, I suddenly recalled, was Dr. Helena Frost. Tall and slender, with short silver hair and sharp gray eyes, she exuded an aura of cold, calculating intellect. As the lead scientist, she'd been responsible for our suffering, her ambition driving her to unlock the secrets of our supernatural abilities at any cost.
"Dr. Frost, the readings are off the charts," another voice chimed in, concern seeping into their words.
"Good," she replied simply, her gaze locked on me as if I were nothing more than an interesting specimen. "Let's see how far we can push him."
"Wait, please! It's too much!" I shouted, struggling against my restraints, but my pleas fell on deaf ears. Instead, the pain intensified, my vision blurring as darkness threatened to overtake me.
"Stay strong," I told myself, trying to hold onto the last remnants of my sanity. But as the pain reached a crescendo, I couldn't help but wonder: Who am I? And what does this mean for my future?
"Enough!" Dr. Frost finally said, and the pain receded as abruptly as it had come. My body trembled with relief, my breaths coming in ragged gasps.
"Interesting," she murmured, her eyes never leaving me. "Very interesting indeed."
"Helena, you're playing with fire," a colleague warned, but she simply smiled, that cold, detached smile that sent shivers down my spine.
"Of course," she replied. "That's the only way to truly understand the power we're dealing with."
"Helena, are you sure about this?" one of the scientists asked, concern evident in his voice.
"Absolutely," Dr. Frost replied, her tone icy and confident. "Cain's body can handle it."
A sudden, intense pressure built in my hands, like the most severe cramp I had ever felt. The sensation became unbearable, until, with a nauseating crunch, I felt something change within me.
"Argh!" I cried out, my voice strained and desperate. The sound of bones shifting echoed through the sterile room as my hands transformed before my very eyes.
"Remarkable," Dr. Frost whispered, leaning forward to observe the metamorphosis more closely.
My fingers elongated unnaturally, the skin stretching taut around the newly formed bone structure. Sharp, claw-like appendages burst forth from my knuckles, glistening with slick crimson, like freshly sharpened blades.
"Wh-what's happening to me?" I stammered, terror gripping my heart. My wide, fearful eyes locked onto the twisted, lethal weapons that had become a part of me.
"Power, Mr. Leclair," Dr. Frost said, her voice devoid of emotion. "You're witnessing the birth of your true potential."
I stared at my grotesque new appendages, my breaths shallow and shaky as panic threatened to consume me. This couldn't be real. It had to be some sort of nightmare.
"Focus, Cain," Dr. Frost commanded. "Control is key."
"Control? How am I supposed to control this?" I thought frantically, trying to make sense of the impossible situation.
"Think of them as an extension of yourself," Dr. Frost instructed, her gaze never wavering from my hands.
"An extension of myself? She's mad," I thought, my mind racing with fear and doubt.
With trembling resolve, I attempted to grasp the monstrous power that now resided within me. My thoughts were a maelstrom of questions, my identity fractured beneath the weight of this newfound ability.
"What am I?" I whispered, my voice cracking under the strain of exhaustion and terror. "What have I become?"
"Embrace it, Cain," Dr. Frost urged, her eyes gleaming with a cold, predatory hunger. "This is only the beginning."
I focused on my hands, the monstrous claws protruding from my knuckles like grotesque weapons. Their razor-sharp edges glinted menacingly under the sterile white lights of the room. My heart pounded in my chest as I tried to wrap my head around this new reality.
"Try moving them," Dr. Frost's cold voice cut through my thoughts. "You must learn to control them if you're ever going to harness their true potential."
Swallowing hard, I willed myself to heed her words. My hands trembled as I attempted to flex the claws. To my shock, they responded – albeit awkwardly – to my mental command. The sensation was alien and unnerving, yet deeply fascinating.
"Good, Cain," Dr. Frost remarked, a note of approval in her otherwise emotionless tone. "Now, try retracting them. Be aware of your thoughts and emotions – control is key."
I took a deep breath, battling against the fear that clawed at the edges of my consciousness. Slowly, I focused on willing the claws to recede back into my hands. Sweat beaded my forehead as I concentrated, my muscles tensing with effort. After a moment, the claws began to withdraw, leaving only a dull ache in their wake.
"Remarkable," Dr. Frost murmured, her eyes never leaving my hands.
As I struggled with my newfound ability, I couldn't help but notice the other children in the room. Fear and curiosity danced in their eyes as they watched me, their own developing powers temporarily forgotten. I could see the questions forming behind their gazes, the silent wonderings about their own transformations and what it meant for their futures.
"Is it... painful?" one girl asked, her voice barely above a whisper.
"Only when they're coming out," I replied, my voice strained. "After that... it just feels wrong."
"Can you control it?" another chimed in, his face pale with trepidation.
"Control's a strong word," I admitted. "It's more like... learning to live with it."
"Enough!" Dr. Frost snapped, her icy gaze silencing the room. "This is not a time for idle chatter.
My heart raced as I tried to suppress the myriad of emotions bubbling within me. The fear, the uncertainty, the strange sense of exhilaration that accompanied my newfound power – they threatened to overwhelm me. But I knew I needed to keep them in check, maybe with these I could find away out of this nightmare
