Chapter 2
My dream was a blur, and I couldn't recall any details. But the heaviness in my body upon waking up told me that it must have been a frightening experience. The fear lingered even after I had opened my eyes, and I struggled to fall back asleep for the rest of the night, only managing brief moments of slumber before jolting awake again.
The dull buzz of fluorescent lights flickered on, causing my eyes to squint in discomfort. "Attention, all subjects. Dr. Frost will be arriving shortly for your daily check-up," announced a disembodied voice over the intercom, its tone emotionless and cold.
My stomach churned with dread at the mention of her name. Dr. Helena Frost The other children exchanged nervous glances, their fear palpable, and I shared their unease.
The door hissed open, revealing her calculating gray eyes. She stepped into the room, her white lab coat billowing behind her like a sinister shroud. Her piercing gaze swept over us, assessing and scrutinizing our every move as we all moved to stand on the red line in the room.
"Good morning, Dr. Frost," I said cautiously, trying to sound confident but unable to mask the tremor in my voice.
"Ah subject 12, no its Cain now" she replied coolly, her lips curving into a thin smile. "Always so polite. I appreciate that in a subject." With those words, she began her examination, moving from child to child with clinical detachment. It was clear that we were nothing more than specimens to her – test subjects in her twisted pursuit of knowledge.
As she approached me, I couldn't help but study her face, searching for any hint of humanity beneath the icy exterior. But there was none to be found – only an unwavering determination that sent chills down my spine.
"Interesting," Dr. Frost murmured as she examined me, her fingers cold and unyielding as they pressed against my temples. I flinched at the touch of the cold device she held as it, biting back a cry of pain as she continued her assessment.
"Is it true that you've been having difficulty sleeping, Cain?" she asked, her tone almost conversational as she typed something down in her tablet.
"Y-yes," I stammered, my heart pounding with fear.
"Very well. We'll adjust your dosage accordingly," she said dismissively, already turning her attention to the next child. But something caught her eye, causing her to pause and stare at me intently. "You've been talking to the others, haven't you?"
"Only trying to help them cope," my voice steady despite the panic rising within me.
"Indeed, It's good to help out others however." Dr. Frost replied, her eyes narrowing slightly. "Remember, Cain: cooperation is key. Any attempts to disrupt the harmony of this facility will be met with swift consequences." She didn't say another word after that just taking a few none here and there on her tablet with each children.
The threat hung heavy in the air as she left the room, the door sliding shut behind her with an ominous hiss. I swallowed hard, my throat constricted, and glanced around at the other children who looked just as shaken as I felt.
"Cooperation" might've been her mantra, but what she truly sought was control – complete and absolute. And the more we cooperated, the closer she came to unlocking the secrets she so desperately craved.
After completing her checks, she departed just as swiftly as she had arrived.
Hours had passed now but the dim lighting in the underground facility still cast eerie shadows on the walls, amplifying the sense of captivity that weighed heavily upon us. I looked around at the other children – their wide eyes, trembling hands, and hunched shoulders all telling the same story of fear and confusion. They were like frightened animals, trapped and unsure of what fate awaited them next.
"Hey," whispered a Lena small girl with curly black hair and bright blue eyes, her voice barely audible as she clutched a tattered stuffed rabbit to her chest. "What do you think they're going to do to us?"
"I don't know," I admitted, my own fear rising in my chest as I tried to maintain an air of calm for her sake. "But we have to stick together if we want to make it out of here."
"Even if we don't understand why we're here?" asked, Ethan who had been sitting quietly in the corner.
"Especially then," I replied, my voice firm with resolve. "We may not know much about this place or what they want from us, but we know enough to realize that we can't trust them. We have to rely on each other."
As I spoke, I noticed the others nodding in agreement, their expressions shifting from fear to something more akin to determination. It wasn't much, but it was a start – a spark of hope in the darkness.
"Okay," said the Nina, her grip tightening as she looked up at me. "What do we do now?"
"First, we gather information," I explained, my mind racing as I formulated a plan. "We need to learn as much as we can about this place and what they're doing to us. The more we know, the better our chances of getting free."
"Why does it hurt?" asked the Ethan, his voice wavering slightly. "The experiments, I mean."
"I don't know," I admitted, swallowing the lump in my throat as memories of pain flooded my mind. "But we have to be strong, for ourselves and for each other."
"Okay," he whispered, his eyes welling up with tears. "I'll try to be brave."
"Good," I said, trying to smile despite the unsettling atmosphere that clung to us like a shroud. "We're all in this together, remember?
As we huddled together, our shared sense of captivity binding us in an unspoken bond of solidarity, I couldn't help but feel a flicker of hope amidst the oppressive darkness. Despite the odds stacked against us and the uncertainty that lay ahead, I knew that together, we had a fighting chance.
And as long as we had each other, maybe – just maybe – we could survive whatever horrors awaited us.
Then, we all heard the dreaded sound. The sound of air hissing, we all looked to one another in alarm knowing what was coming next.
"See you on the other side" I said to no one in particular, as my consciousness faded.
I awoke to the cold steel table pressed against my back, sending shivers down my spine as I stared up at the sterile white ceiling. My heart pounded in my chest with a mix of fear and anticipation, and all around me, I could hear the quiet hum of machinery. For a moment, I closed my eyes, trying to block out the sounds and focus on my breathing.
"Relax, Cain," Dr. Frost's voice cut through the silence, cool and detached as always. "This will be over before you know it."
"Easy for you to say," I muttered under my breath, clenching my fists as she approached feeling the restraints a crossed my chest and on my wrist and ankles, her gray eyes as emotionless as the walls that surrounded us.
"Remember, this is all for the greater good," she said, and I couldn't tell if she was trying to reassure me or herself.
As Dr. Frost began her preparations, I felt a dull ache in my chest – not from any physical pain, but from the emotional weight of it all. The constant experimentation left me drained and disoriented, and the gaps in my memory only added to my confusion. What had I done to deserve this? Who was I before this place?
"Try to stay still," Dr. Frost instructed as she held the syringe filled with the green liquid, the source of my pain. I gritted my teeth as the first wave of pain hit me like a freight train. I felt as if every nerve in my body were on fire, my muscles spasming uncontrollably as she continued her work.
"Stop!" I gasped, my vision swimming with black spots. "Please, just stop!"
"Almost done," she replied, her voice infuriatingly calm as she moved to my hands causing the pain to intensify.
As the injections finished, she walked away to refill her syringe and begin on the next one of us.
"Hey, are you alright?" whispered a concerned voice, barely audible over my own ragged breathing. It was one of the other kids – the dark-haired girl I'd seen earlier, Nina was her name I believe. We didn't know each other well, but I could sense her genuine concern.
"Fine," I lied, struggling to keep my voice steady. "I just... need a minute."
"Stay strong, Cain," she urged, her words offering a small measure of comfort as the pain finally began to subside. "We'll get through this."
As Dr. Frost completed her work on all of us and stepped away, I couldn't help but wonder what secrets lay hidden within me – and if I would ever truly understand them. Who was I before they took me? What had I done with these abilities? And most importantly, who could I trust in this place?
"Alright, that's enough for today," Dr. Frost announced, her voice betraying no hint of emotion. "You can go back to your room now. Bring the next group she said to one of guards. Then we were all wheeled back to our room by the guards and untied.
"Dam it, it hurts" I muttered, feeling the pulsing pain in my hands as I began pushing myself up from the table with trembling limbs. The pain had left me feeling weak and vulnerable, and I couldn't shake the nagging suspicion that there was more to these experiments, just what were they trying to do?
"Hey," Nina said quietly as the guards left the room together. "You did good in there. And don't worry – we'll figure this place out."
"Thanks," I replied, forcing a weak smile. But deep down, I knew the truth: our situation was far from over, I couldn't remember how long we all have been here. The only way I was able to tell was that we all had grown out of our original clothes, forcing us to be given new ones. at least a year I thought to myself maybe more.
"Where do you think they're keeping the others?" I asked, my voice barely audible above the hum of the fluorescent lights overhead.
"I don't know, Nothing concrete" she admitted, her eyes looking out the window of our door to the seemingly endless row of closed doors that lined the hall. "But we'll find them."
"Then we'll just have to rely on ourselves," I replied, my resolve hardening like steel.
"Yes, we have to" she agreed looking at the me and the others.
