chapter 28
"OKAY, WHAT'S GOING ON?" VIVIAN ASKED GLENN THE NEXT MORNING AT BREAKFAST,
"What do you mean?" The Korean boy responded, glancing at something over Vivian's shoulder.
She turned her head to spot Maggie standing on the porch, glaring at Glenn. The farm girl shook her head before heading inside,
"I'm not stupid, Glenn. You've been acting weird for a few days now. And the fruit and jerky? And the glares? Maggie wants you to keep something quiet and I doubt it's that you two are sleeping together."
Glenn's eyes widened, "You know we've had sex?"
"Please, I'm sure everyone but Carl and Liam know. So, what gives?" Vivian crossed her arms.
"Um... well... there's, uh..."
"Spit it out, Glenn." Vivian hissed,
"There's walkers in the barn." Glenn whispered.
Vivian stared at Glenn, her eyes wide, "What? Why? How many?" Only yards away, there had been flesh eating dead people, rotting away in a barn that's barely held together by rusty nails and moldy wood.
"I don't know, at least a dozen. And well, they think they're still people. That they can get better." Glenn explained,
"And you didn't tell anyone? Glenn, they could've gotten out!" Glenn scrambled to cover Vivian's mouth, to keep her quiet, and she pushed him away, "What if they attacked in the middle of the night, just like the quarry?!"
And torn them apart just like that night when Jillian and Trevor died?
"I know, I'm sorry, okay? But this is their land, their rules." Glenn replied,
"Who else knows?" Vivian's face hardened,
"Just Dale." He answered,
She nodded, "And now you're going to tell Rick."
"But-"
"But nothing. If those walkers break out and attack this group, you're gonna feel like shit, Glenn. Rick can come up with a plan. He can talk to Hershel." She reasoned,
Glenn sighed and nodded, "Yeah, you're right."
"Of course I'm right."
The Korean stood up and walked over to the group, "Um, guys." He rubbed his face nervously, and the others kind of glanced at him while continuing with whatever they were doing, "So... The barn is full of walkers."
Everyone paused and turned to look at him in shock. They all dropped what they were doing and rushed over to the barn. Vivian made sure to grab Liam, not wanting to leave him in the camp alone,
Marcie bit her lip nervously as Shane stared into the barn through the gap in the doors that were chained shut,
"You cannot tell me you're all right with this." Shane stated as he stomped back towards the group,
"No, I'm not, but we're guests here." Rick growled back, "This isn't our land."
"This is our lives!"
Marcie hated to say this, but Shane was right. Hershel and his family put their lives at risk by not informing them of the monsters in the barn. But the group had no right to go and take out the biters, Hershel must have put them in there for a reason.
"Lower your voice." Glenn hissed,
"We can't just sweep this under the rug." Andrea stated, putting hands on her hips,
"It ain't right. Not remotely." Shane rubbed his head as he paced, "Okay, we've either got to go in there, we've got to make things right or we've just got to go." He stopped and placed his cap on his head, "Now we have been talking about fort Benning for a long time."
"We can't go." Rick stopped him,
"Why, Rick? Why?"
"Because my daughter is still out there." Carol spoke up.
"Okay." Shane paused, letting out a sigh, "Okay, I think it's time that we all start to just consider the other possibility."
"We are not leaving Sophia behind." Vivian stated, tightening her hold on Liam,
"I'm close to finding this girl." Daryl stepped forward, "I just found her damn doll two days ago."
Shane chuckled humorlessly, "You found her doll, Daryl. That's what you did. You found a doll."
"You don't know what the hell you're talking about!" He approached Shane and Marcie stood in his way while Rick held his arm out in front of Shane to keep him away from the redneck,
"I'm just saying what needs to be said. You get a good lead, it's in the first 48 hours!" Shane continued his rant,
"Shane, stop!" Rick tried to calm his friend down,
"Let me tell you something else, man. If she was alive out there and saw you coming all methed out with your buck knife and geek ears around your neck, she would run in the other direction!" The cop yelled,
Daryl pushed Marcie out of the way and went to throw a punch at Shane. Rick forced them away from each other, but they just kept coming.
Glenn and Lori grabbed Shane while Marcie reached for Daryl. She grabbed his biceps and pulled him back, "Let it go!"
Vivian stepped back as Liam whined at the conflict, "I know, baby, it's okay." She whispered to him,
Shane raised his finger to Lori, "Keep your hands off me." He told her as he walked it off,
"Now, just let me talk to Hershel. Let me figure it out." Rick insisted,
"What are you gonna figure out?!" Shane yelled at him, approaching the leader,
"Enough!" Lori pushed Shane back again,
"If we're gonna stay, if we're gonna clear this barn, I have to talk him into it. This is his land."
Dale stepped in, his hands raised, "Hershel sees those things in there as people... Sick people... His wife, his stepson."
The group stared at the older man, "You knew?" Rick asked,
"Yesterday I talked to Hershel." Dale confirmed,
"And you waited the night?" Shane grunted angrily,
"I thought we could survive one more night. We did." He snapped at Shane, "I was waiting till this morning to say something. But Glenn wanted to be the one." Dale explained,
"The man is crazy, Rick, if Hershel thinks those things are alive or no!" Shane yelled,
The doors to the barn started shaking, the noise stirring up the walkers. Vivian took a few more steps back, while everyone grabbed their weapons in case the doors gave way,
"What do we do now?" Marcie asked Rick,
"Just give me the day... I'll talk to Hershel." He answered before walking towards the house, leaving the group to go about their day as if the new information didn't rattle them,
Everyone went their separate ways. Shane stayed behind at the barn while mostly everyone else went back to camp.
Vivian began cleaning the dishes they used that morning for breakfast, with Liam sitting close by. She didn't want him out of her sight, not with the walkers not so far away.
"Hershel isn't going to let us put them down." Marcie mumbled, kneeling beside the brunette and drying the plate she just washed, "If his wife and stepson are in there, there's no way he'll be convinced they're monsters."
"Rick's pretty good at persuading people. He got the door open at the CDC, didn't he?" Vivian shot back.
Marcie hummed in agreement, glancing up to see Daryl leaving the stables, holding his side. She sighed, placing the dry plate in the bin before standing, wiping off her jeans, and following after him,
Vivian turned to look at the toddler beside her, holding up the rag, "I wash, you dry?"
"Yeah!" Liam grabbed the rag and began flinging it around,
Marcie caught up to Daryl as he entered the camp, "You need to rest, Daryl. Let someone else look for Sophia."
He turned towards her, his eyes hard with anger, "Like you? You don' even think this girl is alive!"
"Doesn't mean-"
"You won' look fer her, I know." Daryl spat, "God, 'm the only one who thinks she's still out there." He scoffed and went into his tent,
"As long as someone believes, I'll keep looking." Marcie stated, standing outside the tent with her arms crossed, "Want me to get a horse saddled up? You know, after I ask for permission?"
Daryl stared up at her from his sleeping bag and nodded.
"Okay, I'll be back." Marcie turned to walk towards the house,
Vivian watched as Rick made his way back towards camp, "How'd it go?" She asked when he got close enough,
"He wants us gone by the end of the week." He sighed, running his hand through his hair. His gaze turned to Liam, watching the boy play with the plastic bowl,
"So... Fort Benning?"
"We can't go to Fort Benning." Rick stated, "There was nothing at the CDC, and we lost Jim on the way. There's no guarantee that there's anything at Benning either, and who knows who we might lose."
"Rick... what's going on?" Vivian asked, "Why are you so determined to stay here?"
"Lori's pregnant." He answered,
Vivian paused. She didn't know what to think. If this was before the world ended, of course she would be happy for the couple, but in this world? It was dangerous.
That's why Rick wanted to stay so badly. Hershel has medical training, he could help deliver the baby and keep Lori healthy.
Vivian nodded, "I don't know what to say... congrats, I guess? I just... the whole 'wanting to stay' thing makes sense now."
"We need to stay. Not just for Lori, but for Liam... and Carl... and Sophia."
"...Then we'll stay."
Rick cleared his throat and nodded, "I told Andrea I'd help look for Sophia after I talked with Hershel."
"Go find her, Rick."
The sheriff patted Liam on the head before giving Vivian one last nod and walking away to find Andrea.
