chapter 27

VIVIAN KEPT A CLOSE EYE ON GLENN AS HE WALKED AROUND THE CAMP, A BUCKET OF FRUIT IN HAND.

He went to each person, handing them peaches and jerky before walking away, fidgeting nervously.

Viv walked over to T-Dog and Dale, "What was that about?"

"Dunno." T-Dog replied, "He's jumpier than usual."

"You think he's hiding something?" Dale questioned her,

"What else would make him so nervous?" Viv responded before walking back towards her tent, where Liam was taking his mid-day nap.

Marcie stood by the Cherokee with the boys, all gathered around a map to discuss their next move in finding Sophia.

"The creek flows south, past that farmhouse Daryl found. Maybe Sophia dropped the doll there, the current brought it downstream." Rick suggested,

"So what, you think she took this road here and then she went north?" Shane asked,

Rick nodded, "Yeah, think so."

Marcie turned to Jimmy, "What's up that way?" She asked, placing her hands on her waist,

"A housing development. It went in maybe 10 years ago." He answered,

"Take a run up there after gun practice. I'll hold down the fort here, but take backup." Rick told Shane, "After what went down with Daryl, I don't want anyone going out alone. We stay in pairs."

"I'll take suggestions on a partner." Shane stated as Glenn went over to them with a bucket of peaches,

"See how they do on the range, then take your pick." Rick replied,

Marcie watched as Glenn stared at Rick for a little too long, then glanced back at Lori, then over to Shane.

Shane narrowed his eyes at the younger man as he chewed on the peach, "My binoculars."

Glenn set down the bucket, "Yeah, yeah." He handed Shane the binoculars before avoiding eye contact and walking off, "Okay, bye."

Marcie and Rick exchanged a look. She shrugged before taking a bite of the fruit.

Beth and Patricia walked up behind them, "We'd like to join you for gun training today." Beth stated,

"Hershel's been very clear. I can't involve any of you in what we do without his okay." Rick replied,

"He doesn't like it, but he consented." Beth told him,

"Otis was the only one who knew gun. Now that he's gone, we gotta learn to protect ourselves. Her father saw the sense in that." Patricia continued,

"No offence, but I'll ask Hershel myself."

Vivian was sitting with Liam when the commotion started. Carl had stolen a gun from the RV, and Lori, reasonably, was upset about with. Dale, Shane, Rick, and Lori stood around, talking about it while Carl walked over to Vivian,

"I just wanted to learn how to protect myself." Carl mumbled as he sat on the log next to her, "To protect the group."

The brunette woman reached out and flicked the rim of his hat, "I know, bud, but that's not how they see it."

He stared at Liam as the toddler played with a toy car in the dirt, "How do you see it?"

Vivan sighed, reaching out to run her fingers through Liam's curls, "You're trying to grow up too fast. Which might be a good thing in this world. But you went about it the wrong way. Lying and stealing? That's not you, Carl."

"I know," He mumbled, "I don't know how to fix it."

"Explain yourself to them. Have a conversation, a debate. Prove yourself, bud." She smiled at him,

"And that'll work?" Carl asked, looking up at her,

"Won't know until you try." Vivian smiled at him.

"He's not mature enough to handle a gun." Lori stated loud enough for them to hear.

Carl stood up and confidently walked over to his parents, "I'm not gonna play with it, mom. It's not a toy. I'm sorry I disappointed you, but I want to look for Sophia and I want to defend our camp. I can't do that without a gun."

Rick turned to Lori to whisper to her and Carl glanced back at Vivian. She gave him a confident thumbs up before glancing over at Liam, who was trying to put dirt into his mouth, "No, don't eat that."

Lori walked over to her son and grabbed his chin, forcing him to look up at her, "You will take this seriously and you will behave responsibly. And if I hear from anyone in this camp that you're not living up to our expectations..."

"He won't let you down." Rick stated, giving his son a look,

Carl glanced at him before looking back up at his mother and nodding, "Yeah."

Lori patted his cheeks gently before walking away. Carl grinned over at Vivian before running over and high diving her, "They're letting me go!"

"Told ya, bud. If you want to be treated like an adult, you need to act like one, got it?"

He nodded, "Got it." He went back over to his father, who was watching the interaction. Vivian gave Rick a nod and he curtly gave her one back before leading his son towards Shane.

Marcie continued nibbling on the jerky while going through the laundry. A quick whistle caught her attention and she turned to see Daryl staring at her from their tent, "Ya goin'."

"Was that a question or an order?" She asked as she set down the pair of jeans and walked over,

"Ya need to learn. That knife ain't gonna keep ya alive out there. Need to have a back up." He stated,

Marcie shrugged, "Guns are loud. Draw more walkers in. That's why you carry around that big scary crossbow."

"'S also a long range weapon. Mean you don't gotta get close to the fuckers to take them out. Different with a knife." Daryl continued,

He did have a point. Less risk of getting bitten if she was able to take out the biters from afar.

Marcie rolled her eyes and sighed, "You're annoying when you're right." She muttered before walking away.

Lori offered to watch Liam while Vivian went to gun practice with the other group members. They went miles from camp, some random field Hershel said would be a good place to shoot. They lined the wooden fence with bottle and can before Shane and Rick handed out guns.

The duo taught the group how to hold the hand gun, how to load it, the safety of it all. It was a lot to remember, but Rick assured them that it would all be second nature once they were used to it.

Vivian bit her lip in frustration as she missed her fourth shot. She didn't understand what she was doing wrong.

Rick stepped up behind her, his arms reaching around her as he placed his hands over her own, "Don't lock your arms. Need a slight bend and keep both eyes open." He stated lowly in her ear, causing a shiver to go down her back.

"Right." She muttered, taking aim once again.

"And don't forget to breathe."

She pulled the trigger and the wine bottle on the fence shattered. Vivian smiled and Rick patted her lower back, "Keep going." He encouraged before walking away.

Marcella grinned as she made her third perfectly aimed shot in a row. She was better at this than she thought she would be.

She didn't know if that should scare her or not.

"Thought you said you didn't know how to shoot." Rick smirked as he stood next to her,

"Just gunning for your job, sheriff." Marcie joked,

He pointed at a small beer bottle on the fence, "That one."

Marcie raised the gun once more and mentally counted the steps. One foot in front of the other, shoulder width apart. Elbows slightly bent, safety off, take aim. She let out a breath and pulled the trigger.

"Great job, Marcie."

She lowered the gun and put the safety on before looking over at the sheriff, "Rick... is the group gonna stay at the farm?"

He stared at her for a moment, "I... I'm working on it but I hope so.... why?"

The brunette sighed, "I can't find my parents if I'm not searching for them."

"They might not be out there, Marcie." Rick told her, stepping closer so no one would overhear their conversation.

"But I won't know that if I don't try." She placed the handgun into her waistband, "Rick, I would like to think that I'm realistic. I understand that they might be dead, but there's gotta be a chance right? I would never be able to forgive myself if I didn't at least try and find them."

She wanted to stay with the group, and she was hoping she would find her parents while they were on the road. But if they were done moving around, then there goes her chances,

"I get it-"

"I know you do. Because you went through the same thing. And you found your family. What if I could find mine?"

He squeezed her shoulder, "We're your family now, too, Marcie."
