chapter 29

MARCIE AND DARYL WERE OUT FOR HOURS SEARCHING FOR SOPHIA.

They searched the area near the ravine where Daryl had injured himself, looking for clues or anything that could lead to the little girl.

But they found nothing.

As they were heading back towards the farm, Marcie smiled as they came across a pond near the farm.

"What?" Daryl asked, spotting the grin on her face,

"Look." Marcie pointed at the bushes that lined the pond, filled with white flowers, "It's beautiful, isn't it?" The redneck hummed and Marcie rolled her eyes at his disinterest, "It's a sign, don't you think?" She slid off the horse and went to one of the bushes, plucking the Cherokee Rose and smelling it, "I think you should show Carol."

"Why?" Daryl grunted,

"Because she's loosing hope right now. Shane's little outburst this morning certainly didn't help. She needs to know that someone is still looking for her daughter." Marcie replied, walking back over to the horse and holding the flower up for Daryl to take.

He gently took the stem of the flower from her fingers and twirled it between his thumb and index finger, "Maybe." He mumbled,

Marcie rolled her eyes and brought the horse over to a fallen tree, using it as a step stool to help her up. She slid on in front of Daryl and flicked the reins, "Let's go."

After they got back to the farm, Daryl went to go find Carol and show her the flowers. Marcie went to put the horse back in the stable and wandered back to the camp.

The group was gathered around the Greene's porch, either playing a game or reading. Vivian was sitting on the swing, Liam in her lap as they read a kids book. Marcie walked over and sat down next to them, "Where is everyone?"

"Andrea and T-Dog at the barn keeping watch, Shane went to look for Dale, Rick is off with Jimmy and Hershel, and I think Carol went somewhere with Daryl." Vivian answered, "Did you find anything?"

Marcie shook her head, "Nope."

T-Dog and Andrea approached the group, "Do you know what's going on?"

"Where is everyone?"

Glenn stood, "You haven't seen Rick?"

"He went off with Hershel. We were supposed to leave a couple hours ago." Andrea answered,

Daryl and Carol walked over, "Yeah, you were. What the hell?"

"Rick told us he was going out." Carol stated,

"Damn it. Isn't anybody taking this seriously? We got us a damn trail." Daryl growled,

Vivian stood, balancing Liam on her hip as she noticed Shane walking towards them, gun in his hand, "Oh, here we go."

"What's all this?" Daryl asked,

Shane held the gun out to him, "You with me, man?"

He nodded, taking the gun into his hands, "Yeah."

Vivian had a bad feeling. Shane was gonna storm the barn, and without Rick around to stop him, who knows how many people were going to get hurt.

"Time to grow up." He turned to look at Andrea, "You already got yours?"

"Yeah. Where's Dale?" Andrea asked,

"He's on his way." Shane answered, giving a gun to T-Dog,

"Thought we couldn't carry." T-Dog stated,

"We can and we have to." He turned to the group, "Look, it was one thing sitting around here picking daisies when we thought this place was supposed to be safe. But now we know it ain't." He held a shot gun out to Glenn, "How about you, man? You gonna protect yours?" The Korean glanced at Maggie before taking the gun, "That's it." He turned to Maggie, "Can you shoot?"

"Can you stop? You do this, you hand out these guns, my dad will make you leave tonight." Maggie argued,

She was right. And if they left, all chances of finding Sophia would diminish. Shane was single handily killing the group.

"We have to stay, Shane." Carl defended, walking down the porch steps,

Lori walked out of the house, "What is this?"

Shane approached the young boy, "We ain't going anywhere, okay?" He stood to speak to the entire group, "Now look, Hershel, he's just gotta understand. Okay? He... Well, he's gonna have to. Now we need to find Sophia. Am I right?" He kneeled in front of Carl, holding out a small hand gun, "Huh? Now I want you to take this. You take it, Carl, and you keep your mother safe. You do whatever it takes. You know how. Go on, take the gun and do it."

Lori stood between Shane and her son, "Rick said no guns. This is not your call. This is not your decision to make."

"Oh shit." T-Dog cursed and they all turned to see what he was staring at.

In the distance, by the barn, Hershel and Rick were walking out of the woods with biters on dog poles with Jimmy ahead, clapping his hands to keep the biters' attention on him,

"What is that?!" Shane took off at a sprint, "What is that?!"

Vivian watched as the group ran after Shane, towards the barn. She quickly placed Liam inside the house, "I want you to stay here, okay? Play with your toys, I'll be back."

"Okay!" Liam reached for his cars and began to drive them on the hardwood,

"Okay." Vivian sighed, giving Liam one last look before stepping out onto the porch, spotting Carol, Lori, and Carl who were waiting for her.

Vivian grabbed Carol's hand and the two walked down towards the barn.

"What the hell are you doing?!" Shane yelled out as they ran past the gate and got closer to Rick and Hershel,

"Shane, just back off!" Rick ordered,

"Why do your people have guns?" Hershel questioned,

Marcie came to a stop, panting and watching as Daryl and Glenn held up the guns, aiming them at the walkers,

Shane circled the men, pointing at them, "Are you kidding me? You see? You see what they're holding onto?"

"I see who I'm holding onto." The old man argued,

Shane shook his head, "No, man, you don't."

"Shane, just let us do this and then we can talk." Rick begged,

"What you want to talk about, Rick? These things ain't sick. They're not people. They're dead. Ain't gonna feel nothing for them 'cause all they do, they kill! These things right here, they're the things that killed Amy. They killed Otis. They're gonna kill all of us!" Shane ranted,

"Shane, shut up!" Marcie yelled, stepping forward and Daryl blocked her way,

"Hey, Hershel man, let me ask you something. Could a living breathing person, could they walk away from this?" Shane pulled his gun out from his waistband and shot the walker that Hershel was holding onto multiple times in the torso,

"No! Stop it!" Rick begged,

"That's three rounds in the chest. Could someone who's alive, could they just take that?! Why is it still coming?" He continued to shoot, "That's its heart, its lungs. Why is it still coming?!" He shot the biter again, and it still tried to attack them,

Marcie looked over at Hershel, who was staring at the walker in shock. She knew that his mind was being changed, that he know longer viewed the monsters as sick people.

They were dead. And they couldn't be brought back.

"Shane, enough." Rick stated firmly,

"Yeah, you're right, man." He approached the walker, "That is enough." He aimed his gun one last time, shooting it in the head, "Enough risking our lives for a little girl who's gone!"

Vivian glared at Shane and wrapped an arm around Carol, who pressed a hand to her mouth in horror,

"Enough living next to a barn full of things that are trying to kill us! Enough." Shane turned back to them, "Rick, it ain't like it was before! Now if y'all want to live, if you want to survive, you got to fight for it! I'm talking about fighting right here, right now."

Shane approached the barn doors and Rick held the pole out to Hershel, who was still in shock, "Take the snare pole. Hershel, take the snare pole!

Marcie ran over and took the pole from Rick, "Go stop him before it's too late." She begged Rick.

He nodded and ran towards Shane, who was hitting the lock with a pickaxe. Rick raised his gun, "Stop, Shane, don't do it!"

Shane turned towards him and smirked, "You're not gonna do it. You don't have the balls." He turned back to the doors and broke the lock.

He backed up in time for the walkers to come spilling out of the barn. Lori forced Carl behind her and those who had guns stepped up. Rick moved his aim from Shane to the dead, taking them out one by one.

Daryl turned towards Marcie, shooting the walker attached to her pole. She dropped it and stepped back, not wanting to be apart of the carnage.

Vivian was grateful she left Liam in the house as she watched Lori clutch onto her son, who was sobbing into her shirt. She wouldn't want the toddler to see this.

Dozens of walkers poured out of the barn, and none of them made it very far before they were shot down.

Soon, it turned quiet. Everyone lowered their guns, and all they could hear was the sobbing coming from the Greene family.

"What have you done!?" Marcie asked, her questioned directed towards Shane, "That wasn't your call!"

Growls filled the air again and their attention returned to the barn doors.

A small figure stepped out into the light, and everyone held their breath. Carol let out a sob and broke out of Vivian's arms, running forward,

"Sophia!"

But it wasn't Sophia. Not anymore.

It was a shell of what the little girl used to be.

It wasn't the girl who played with her doll or read books, who colored with Liam, who did school work with Carl.

Tears fell down Vivian's face as she stared at the grey skinned corpse, with the festering bite wound on her neck. The ice blue eyes that used to be a warm brown.

She was never in the woods, at least not for long. She had been rotting away in some barn.

Daryl caught Carol and they both fell to the ground, "Don't look." He ordered the grieving mother,

The corpse stumbled forward and yet no one raised their gun. No one moved.

Rick glanced back at Vivian and she nodded. It had to be done. Someone had to do it. Someone had to rescue her from her terrible fate.

He moved towards the front of the group and raised his Python. Sophia's corpse reached out for him, and he pulled the trigger.
