Chapter 26

I watched the sky start to dip behind the hills as the director boomed through his megaphone, “Cut! And that’s a wrap for the day! See you tomorrow!” I could hear the crew and actors applaud, which I always thought was a nice thing to do at the end of the day. Everyone dispersed, cleaning up or taking down things that weren’t needed for the next day and I could see James and Ava intertwine their fingers as they started walking towards me, Carson, Gemma, and Liam following. Instead of watching the March of the Beautiful, I busied myself by packing up my things so that by the time they reached me, I had my bag slung up on my shoulder, ready to go.

“So who’s up for a movie at our house tonight?” James asked as the group made a circle.

“On a Saturday night? Are you kidding? I’m going out,” Gemma said, crossing her arms as if to test if anyone would join her or not.

“That actually sounds fun,” Carson said.

“The movie or partying?” I asked him, raising an eyebrow.

“Partying! I’ll see you guys later. I’m getting out of this stuff and getting a pint,” Carson said, instantly leaving us as we all gave a slightly baffled goodbye as Gemma followed him.

Oh-kay then, so Ava, Liam, you in?” James asked.

“I want to, I really would, but I need sleep. I know, not very exciting, but I feel like I’m about to die and I have a big fight scene tomorrow, so I’m going to bed,” Ava said, shrugging sadly.

“Liam? Should I even ask?”

I watched him and definitely expected him to back out just because everyone else had ditched out.

“Movie night sounds great.”

I had to stop my reaction, but internally I was surprised and excited and absolutely terrified. Stop, nerves! I do not need a stampede going on right now.

“Awesome, we got one! Cam, we’re going to go get changed, I think George is taking us home tonight, so go find him.”

“Oh, you two can ride with me. It’ll be a bit easier that way,” Liam offered.

“Perfect! We’ll be out in five minutes. Time me, Cammie!” I breathed out a short puff of air, being amused at James’ antics as he sprinted off with Liam in tow towards, what I was assuming, the costume trailer. Boys.

“Alright. So what are we watching then?” Liam said, plopping down on the couch and sprawling his long limbs across the entire space when we finally arrived home. I was on the other side of the couch and his feet nearly touched my thigh. Nasty feet.

“I was thinking a thriller. Or else I’ll get bored.” Liam nodded enthusiastically.

“Wait.” Liam stopped nodding and looked in my direction. “Are you going to get all scared and start quivering and screaming?” I narrowed my eyes at him.

“No. I’ve seen plenty of thrillers.”

“It’s true. She hardly reacts at all,” James told Liam. “In fact, it’s kind of boring. You try to scare her at a suspenseful moment and she just kind of glares.”

“Alright, because I have sisters. And they can never make it because they start crying.”

“Well, duh they cry! Victoria is barely twelve, you can’t expect her to watch an entire horror movie without crying. Seriously, Liam, what kind of older brother are you?”

“Hey, I’m a very good older brother,” he told me, “but that doesn’t deny the fact that people crying during a movie ruins it.”

“Don’t worry. I’m not a big crier,” I assured Liam.

“Good. Because I’m not comforting you.” Something about the way he said that hurt. Sure, I knew he was most likely joking, but then again, why would he comfort me if I got scared?

“Wait,” I quivered my lower lip. “You wouldn’t comfort me? But... but Liam. I’m a poor, little female in need of protection.” Putting my head in my hands, I pretended to cry. “Where’s the love, y’all?” I muttered into my hands.

“Sorry love, not happening.” My head snapped up and I stuck my tongue out at him.

“Fine. Be a jerk,” Liam merely laughed at me.

“Hey, pipe down. Movie’s starting,” James ordered from the floor, pointing to the TV screen. In the dimness of the room, the last thing I saw before focusing on the movie, was Liam looking over to me and a soft, subtle smirk crossed his lips and then he turned back toward the movie screen.

I was running. My breathing was erratic and choppy as my legs pushed on. What felt like thousands of psychopaths were chasing me with chainsaws, knives, pitchforks, any weapon they could find. My feet weren’t taking me fast enough. With each step I took I grew wearier and knew I couldn’t carry on farther. Suddenly, I felt my entire body sink into mud. Lashing out, I tried to pull myself to safety, tried to push through. But my body stayed in place as the mob came closer, their satisfied grins shimmering in the foggy moonlight.

“Cam. Camille.” I heard the voice above me and looked to see Liam, holding a knife above his head. His smirk was pure evil as I felt him grab my arm and start to pull me out of the mud. Once my other arm had been released from the mud, I mustered all my strength and punched him square in the jaw.

I felt my entire body jolt awake as I looked where I was. It was almost pitch black, but slowly I could make out the surrounding area. Feeling the couch beneath me, my breathing slowed a bit, but I still couldn’t shake the feeling that I was about to be killed by Liam. Suddenly, I heard a groan from the floor and looked down to see Liam crumpled at the floor of the couch, rubbing his jaw.

“Liam!” I hissed, trying to not wake anyone up. “What are you doing?”

“What am I doing? You just clobbered me.” I glanced down at my hand and it was still in a fist formation. The pain began to register on my knuckles. He had a hard jaw.

“Oh my gosh, I am so sorry. I just... I didn’t mean...” I wasn’t entirely sure where my sentence was going, so I stopped. My arms wrapped around my knees as I felt my entire body shudder.

“Hey. Are you alright?” Liam’s entire face was etched with concern, voice soft.

“Am I alright? I just punched you in the face.” I felt the faint trace of tears on my cheeks and I looked back at him. “Was I crying?”

“Crying, shaking, muttering gibberish. I was on my way out and I wanted to make sure you weren’t having a seizure or something.”

“You were about to kill me,” I told him. “I was being chased by a mob and then I fell in a mud pit and you were about to pull me out to kill me.” His entire face was fairly unreadable, but I recognized that look. I’ve seen it in James a million times before. And it looked like the protective older brother look. He got to his feet and walked over to the movies and searched the shelves until he grabbed a movie off the shelf, opened the case, and slid the DVD into the player. I saw him disappear into the kitchen for a moment before coming back with a glass of water. Grabbing the controller, he sat back in his corner where he sat before and then patted the seat next to him. I eyed him carefully, before I scooted closer to him. He pulled a blanket from off the floor and placed it over both our laps and by this point I was completely uncertain of his actions. Was he just doing this out of his brotherly habits? Or was he making a move? My entire body was still shaking, but I was pretty sure it wasn’t solely from the nightmare I just had.

“Here.” He handed me the cup of water and I drained it quickly. “This is what I put on when my sisters have nightmares. It usually helps.” The screen illuminated with the Disney logo and the music filled the empty room.

“You know your Disney movies?” He gave me an are-you-serious look.

“Sisters, Cam. I have sisters.”

“So what are you still doing here anyway? I mean, what time is it?”

“After the film finished, you had already fallen asleep, but James and I were wide awake. So we were up in his rooms playing some Xbox. Then I remembered that I needed to go home before work tomorrow because I forgot some things. Then, lo and behold, a crying Cam on the couch. Try to wake her up and she punches me in the face.”

“I told you I was sorry!” I said, burying my face in my hands again. Liam chuckled as he wrapped his arm around my shoulder. My head turned out of my hands as I sneaked a peak at him. He didn’t seem fazed in the least that we were right next to each other, practically cuddling, watching a Disney flick together.

“You said you wouldn’t comfort me,” I stated as the movie flashed across the screen.

“You said you wouldn’t cry,” he replied simply. “Now hush.” I did as I was told and pulled the blanket up to my chin and nestled deeper into the couch. My breathing had leveled out again, my tears wiped off my face, and I had the occasional shiver on the account of being next to an extremely attractive British actor who was making sure I was okay and not leaving my side. I was a nobody and here he was treating me like I was the only important thing in the world. And I loved him for it.

My bed was so soft, I didn’t want to move. However, I could feel my arm falling asleep under the weight of my head resting on my pillow. When did my pillow become this comfortable? Placing my face into the pillow, I squeezed my arms around it and breathed in. Oh man. When did my pillow smell so good? Then the realization hit. I was not in my room and this was definitely not my bed.

“You alright there?” A husky, British voice said from above. Craning my neck, I looked up to face Liam.

“Liam... what...” I looked back down to notice my arms wrapped around his waist, my head resting nicely in his chest.

“You fell asleep about ten minutes in. Never thought Disney had that quick of an affect on you.”

“Disney works miracles, I swear. Anyway,” I began to push myself off of him. While I could probably lie there for the rest of time, he probably was wanting to get home and I should get in my own bed. But instead, I felt the weight of his arm wrap around me and pull me to the crook of his neck. The worst bit about this was not knowing if he was just being a forward movie star or if he genuinely wanted me to just snuggle with him. Not that I was complaining. He was soft and warm and smelled like heaven. I just didn’t want to be made a fool of.

“Liam. I should probably get to bed. And you need to go home. You have work in a couple hours.” I had to be sensible. It had to be the early hours of the morning and he had to get to set by seven for hair and make-up.

“I don’t feel like moving,” he spoke against my hair, cheek resting on the top of my head.

I sighed. “Me neither.”

“Can I ask you something, Cam?” Liam asked, seeming somewhat wary of what answer he might get. I shifted my head so I could look at him. Our faces were awfully close and I found myself either focusing on his dark brown eyes or his perfect mouth. Stop it, I demanded myself.

“Hmm?” I saw his eyes dart back and forth between my own eyes and lips. No. He couldn’t. He doesn’t actually. His gaze turned a little more determined and he began to lean in. Oh my gosh, does he? My mind went blank as I felt myself crane my neck up and felt my eyes flutter shut. If he does, my head might implode. I felt his hand cradle my face as he pulled me closer. And then our lips touched.

It was soft at first. A simple kiss holding so many questions. But it was perfect in every way. My hand reached to his neck and pulled him slightly in more and that was the only answer he needed.

He turned his body so it was facing mine as he took my head in both his hands and pulled me in deeper. My arms wrapped around him, feeling the sparks explode from every part of my body. All I wanted to do was kiss him. All day. Everyday. One of his hands moved to the small of my back, practically cradling me as he pushed forward and I started falling backward. But he held me fast, kissing me like there was no tomorrow.

And then he stopped, pulling himself away from me. My eyes searched his, trying to get an answer of what just happened. Both our chests were rising and falling fast. The silence became deafening.

“I just... I needed to know...” He barely whispered the words and I gave him a quizzical look.

“Needed to know what?” He shook his head and suddenly I was very confused. He looked back down at me and gave me a heart melting smile.

“Camille. You’re beautiful. You know that right?” He needed to know that I knew I was beautiful? What was he saying?

“Um. Thank you?” Leaning down, he kissed my forehead softly and then stood to his feet.

“I have work in the morning. And you should get to bed. I’ll see you later alright?” He grabbed his keys and started for the stairs.

“Wait. What?” I spoke sharply, jumping to my feet. He kisses me like that and then decides that he can walk away without a word about it?

But that’s exactly what he thought. He just flashed another smile, dimples and all and said, “Goodnight Cam,” and then he was out of sight.

What in the world was that supposed to be?
