Chapter Five
It was late in the evening when Pepper finally came out to check on Tony, he was still in a state of shock, staring out into the calm lake.
"Tony?" Her gentle voice echoed across the water, he stood up and looked over at her.
"He's gone" his face blank of any emotions, "I could've save him" he stood there beginning to cry.
"I could've saved him!" He screamed kicking the chair he was sitting on.
"There's nothing you could've done, Tony" she tried to comfort him.
"There was one thing" He took a deep breath, "There was one thing!"
"Tony, you could've have done anything" She kept trying to calm him but nothing seemed to work.
"He was too young!" Tears filled Tony's eyes, "Imagine what his aunt is feeling! First she lost her husband's brother and his wife then her husband and now finally her sixteen year old nephew!" He broke down sobbing on the floor.
Pepper could see that he needed to be alone, "I'm going to put Morgan to bed" She explained heading back inside the house.
"And I'm going for a drive" Tony stood up and made his way to his car.
Pepper was confused, "Tony, you can't"
"Why?" He stumbled over to her.
"You're not stable" She stared at him, she was concerned.
"I'll be fine, I always am" He turned around and took out car keys from his from pocket.
"Tony!" She called out.
"Tell Morgan I love her!" He replied while carefully entering the car.
He rolled down the window and waved before driving off to wherever the road takes him.
After an hour and a half of driving Tony pulled in at a gas station to top up on gas and buy some food for the rest of the journey to god knows where.
His eyelids became heavier as he drove down the empty country roads, he rubbed his eyes and returned focus to the road.
All of a sudden a deer came out of nowhere and stood in front of the car, Tony had no time to hit the brakes and swerved off the road.
"Ahhhhh!" He screamed as he hit a tree, he was knocked unconscious by the impact, he was like that for hours.
A young couple were taking a walk down the road and noticed the car, in a panic they called an ambulance. Tony was taken to hospital and his car was towed, there was nothing left but bits of shattered glass and tire tracks.
During the half hour ride to the hospital Tony stayed unconscious, the doctors weren't sure he'd make it out alive.
Once at the hospital they figured out that Tony had broken his wrist and his back, he was lucky it wasn't anything worst, at least that's what the doctors told Pepper.
He was stuck in a coma for the next week, Pepper and Morgan still visited him every day. He was hooked up to multiple machines making sure he was reviving the best treatment. I guess being a billionaire does pay off. For Pepper every day felt slower than the last, when someone you love is in a coma it feels like you're just waiting for them to die. It was worse for Morgan, imagine watching your own father go through all of this at such a young age.
Like always Pepper and Morgan made their way into the hospital to visit Tony. They checked in at the front desk and made their way up the stairs. When they got to his door they were greeted by a tall woman in a white coat who seemed to be guarding it.
"Who are you? Is everything okay?" Asked Pepper who was concerned as Morgan tugged on the sleeve of her coat.
"I'm doctor Harmon, and everything is fine. We're just taking care of this patient who has recently woke from a coma" responded the woman.
"Tony" she asked shocked.
"Do you know him?" Dr Harmon asked.
She frantically nodded trying to push past the woman.
"I'm sorry but nobody can enter yet, we are just running some routine checks to make sure everything things one-hundred percent okay"
"Well what am I supposedly do until then?"
"There's a waiting area just down the hall, I promise this will be quick"
Pepper nodded and went and sat in the waiting area as Morgan played with one of those weird wooded toy things.
