Chapter Three
I was amazed at how Nigel fit in so quickly. He was wonderful and everyone liked him. He invited me to the photoshoot for the magazine. No photographer had even done that for me! Afterwards, we selected the best photos to put in the magazine.
After a couple of weeks, we finally put everything together and were able to finish before the dealine. Everyone was joyous. I was also happy.
"Hey, everyone", I said aloud.
I waited until the chatter died down.
"I know you are all happy that we finished before the deadline. All I want to say is that the next time, we should work very hard and not procrastinate so that we'll not be in such a hurry to meet the deadline", I said.
I heard the murmurs of agreement and went back into my office.
I was packing up and caught a glimpse of Nigel working on something. It was quite late and I wondered why he was still here. My curiosity got the better of me so I decided to ask him.
"Hey. You did a really great job. I'm really glad I employed you", I told him.
"I'm glad too", he said.
"I don't want to interfere or anything, but why are you still here?" I asked.
"I just had to get some work done."
"Oh, I almost forgot. Colton's holding a party. Everyone's invited. Do you want to come?"
"No. I'm really busy."
"Oh ok. I guess I'll see you later."
"Yeah. Later."
I was so not missing Colton's party for anything. His parties were legendary and memorable. I got into the car and drove to Colton's house. The place was packed. It seemed like Colton had invited the whole neighbourhood which was impossible.
I spotted Rita on the dance floor. She is an awesome dancer. I sighed, relieved that I had seen someone I recognised. I headed towards her and was blocked by a small crowd, full of people cheering her on. After her performance, I made my way towards her.
"Kayla! You came!" Rita said, bubbling with excitement.
I noticed she had some purple highlights in her hair. Hmm.... I hadn't noticed it before. Oh, by the way, Rita's an African American.
"Yeah, I did but I don't want to stay here for a long time", I said.
"Aww... because I've got my party on!" Rita said, raising her hands in the air.
"I love the highlights in your hair", I said, running my fingers through her hair.
"Yeah. I love them too. Purple's my favourite colour", Rita said and we went on to talk about random things.
"I have an idea for the magazine. Why don't we give our readers to ask questions about fashion and stuff? Then you'll answer them", Rita told me.
"Me?" I asked.
"Yeah. You're the fashionista. Don't worry. We can answer them together", Rita said.
"Okay. What a relief."
"So what do you think about the new guy?"
"You mean Nigel? He's a wonderful photographer and he's also great at working with people. Everyone likes him."
"You even know his name! You're way ahead of me. I think he's cute."
"I employed him, remember? I think he's shy. He didn't want to come to the party."
"Oh what a shame. I could have chatted with him."
"You mean you would have flirted with him."
Rita playfully punched me in the arm.
"Wouldn't you have done that?"
"No. I just broke up with Austin."
"That doesn't exempt you from dating."
"Whatever. I'm not going to date anytime soon."
"Let's go and dance. This is my favourite song", Rita said, pulling my hand to the dance floor.
I couldn't object and we danced the night away.
