Chapter Thirteen
"This is my favourite part", I said, pointing to the huge television screen in front of us. We were having a movie marathon and we were watching our old favourites. There's something about that. I just love it. It refreshes my memory about the movie and it's kind of exciting remembering old movies. Nigel and I were sitting on the sofa, with his arms sprawled across my shoulders. Nigel was at my place that evening.
Rita was fast asleep in her bedroom. I'm sure by now, you're wondering what my relationship with Rita has got to do with this. In spite of the fact that she's twenty six, right before she moved in, she was staying with her parents. Her parents enforced the rules at home since she was still under their roof, or so they said. Anyways, she was fed up with them and crashed at her friends' house night after night. Her friends were mad at her because it irritated them to no end.
So, she was back with her parents. When we became friends, she told me about her dilemma and like taking a stray dog into your home, I took her in. The first few years she moved in, we had at least ten arguments every day. Am I exaggerating? The point is, we totally understand each other now. We still have arguments, but to a lesser extent. This reminded me of the friendship I had with Nikki.
Kayla, stop thinking about it! I reprimanded myself. I was already feeling guilty about everything. Thinking about it would just worsen everything. Clearly, it did, because at that moment, pools of tears started forming at my eyelids. Oh no. I didn't want to bawl in front of Nigel. I looked away, so he wouldn't see the tears that were trickling down my face. Unfortunately, I had no such luck.
"Kayla, are you okay?" Nigel asked, pulling my face towards his.
"Yeah, I'm fine. I've just been thinking a lot", I answered.
"About?" Nigel inquired.
"Stuff", I said curtly.
"What stuff?" Nigel asked again.
"They're not important."
"Everything about you is important to me, Kayla."
At that moment, his phone rang and he excused himself and went out. Phew. Whoever called at that moment was a lifesaver. I couldn't tell him what had happened between Nikki and me, especially when he was the reason for our argument in the first place. No, I couldn't tell him. Nigel was back with a worried expression on his face.
"One of the Bible study leaders in our youth group recently fell ill. Can you fill in?" Nigel asked me.
"I...I... can't", I answered.
"Why not?" Nigel asked again.
"Because I'm not into all that stuff", I replied.
Nigel gave me a puzzled look. I mentally gave myself a slap. I was supposed to be into that stuff. I was a Christian. I was supposed to act like one anyway.
"What I mean is, I'm not exactly a Bible scholar", I said.
"You don't necessarily have to be one."
"I don't know anything. I'm just going to make a complete fool of myself."
"That's not true."
"It is. Plus, I'm busy with a lot of work. I'm sure you'll find someone else."
"Yeah, I'll just give Sophie a call. I really wish you could come."
"Yeah. Good luck with the Bible study and everything."
"Yeah, thanks."
And with that, he left. I felt a sudden surge of jealousy pierce through me. Sophie. She was the perfect church girl who had been hitting on Nigel except he didn't know that. Wow. I just missed the perfect opportunity to spend the rest of my night with Nigel and now Sophie was ahead of me. I didn't want to embarrass myself or risk being found out. I wasn't ready to take that risk. No, not at all.
