The air was cool inside the testing building. The Candor and Erudite girls' high heels clicked against the flooring as we slowly filed into the building. There was a large foyer with cream coloured walls and a skylight letting the morning sunshine turn the walls golden. There was a massive wooden desk at the back wall with an Erudite female and a young Abnegation girl looking over paperwork and answering any questions.
I felt my lip curl. Abnegation. I disliked Candor and I hated Abnegation. The selfless. Their work was noble, their people were kind but I loathed that particular faction. I loved colour, and all things bright. Abnegation wore grey. Not even black, grey. Their clothes were loose, not to be comfortable, but to make sure they looked like tents. They had a high standing in our society, but they were forced to do the most mundane and horrible work. Forced. Yes, some chose the faction, but what about the ones that grew up in it? The girls who never got to look pretty. The young men who never got to show off their capabilities in sports. What about them?
I seethed inwardly as I watched all the factions file in while different Abnegation young people held the doors and waited in corners for everyone else to get through. Something inside me snapped and I decided to wait quietly with one girl standing awkwardly on the right side of the large doors. I got a couple of looks from other faction members, but whatever.
I looked away from the crowd wandering by and looked at the girl beside me. She had golden brown hair and hazel eyes, and was just a little shorter than me. Not many women were my height or taller as I was on the tall side of average. She gave me a little smile when I looked at her.
I ghosted a smile back, then threw caution to the wind, "you looked lonely over here, so I thought I'd stand with you."
She looked at me quizzically, "why would you do that? What about your friends? Don't you want to sit with them?"
I sighed and then answered, "I don't really have any friends here and the ones I do have are not in my faction."
"Oh."
We stood silent again. There were no more young people outside, so we were now just waiting for the few stragglers to get across the foyer and into the main auditorium where the leader of Erudite could address us before our tests.
"Abnegation...Amity to a Stiff, that's rich!" A boy in a white jacket and black pants taunted as he shoved past the girl and me. I glared and rolled my eyes at his back and the girl beside me giggled.
"You handled that well!" She smiled at me.
I scoffed, "I handled that well? He just tried to insult me by calling me one of your faction. I'm thinking you're the one who handles it well."
The foyer was quickly emptying of any colour but grey and I knew it was almost time for me to leave the girl behind. She startled me by sticking her hand out, "I'm Mildred, by the way."
"I'm Lily, it was nice to meet you." I shook her hand and quickly made up my mind to go into the auditorium. I gave Mildred a small wave and she nodded in recognition as I turned to wend my way through the seating. I found a seat three rows from the back and only about two in. I tightened my flowing skirt around my legs to inch past two Amity boys who were already seated. I sat down with a huff and smoothed my skirt before looking around me.
Because I was so far in the back, I was high up, so I could see almost everything. All the different colours of the different factions looked so organized and aesthetic in their different sections. People began to quiet down and suddenly it was like everyone's nerves got the best of them at the exact same moment, and no one wanted to talk.
Silence filled the room as the Erudite leader came out to speak to us. I folded my hands in my lap and stared down at the leader's well cut blue blazer, pencil skirt and pumps. Her short haircut was sophisticated, yet feminine and she spoke with clear and concise pronunciation.
What if I'm Erudite? Would I enjoy that?
I crinkled my nose at the thought.
There's no way I can be Erudite.
I suddenly realized I had been completely lost in thought as everyone began clapping for the Erudite woman and an Abnegation leader came out to speak.
"Thank you, Jeanine, for your encouraging and inspiring words. Now, as you all know, you are about to be tested, and to keep everything flowing smoothly, we ask that you observe the following rules and procedures.
"Please keep talking to a minimum. When you are done your exam, go out the door shown to you and leave the building quickly and quietly. If people ask you about your test, please kindly remind them that you are not permitted to discuss your results.
"If any of you are excited, please stay calm and mature. This is serious business. If any of you feel nervous, don't be. It is a simple test and you will have the rest of the day, tonight and tomorrow morning to sort out your thoughts.
"Thank you for your attention, now, beginning with Erudite, I will call your names in alphabetical order, in groups of five. You may file down and follow the representative to my left. They will take you to where you will await testing.
"First group from Erudite: Brian Adams, Selena Arthur, Kevin Asher, Theresa Avalon and Melvin Bailey."
I watched tensely as the first five young people stood quietly and walked over to where an Abnegation representative stood and waved them through a door and out of sight.
"Cynthia Benson, Marcus Bolton, Sylvester Bronson, Kenneth Craig and Eunice Crocker."
Five more filed down and disappeared with a different Abnegation representative. After about five minutes, I watched as Owen's name was called. He looked up over his shoulder, scouring the room with his eyes as he walked to the doorway. I gave the tiniest wave in case he saw me, but I don't think he did. And then he was gone.
Next was Candor. I got to watch Katy walk out of the room. That was hard too. I felt my knuckles turning white from the pressure I was putting on them as I twisted my hands in my lap. Finally, Amity was being called down.
"Marissa Ryder, Shari Santos, Lily Steele, Joshua Stephens, Charissa Thompson."
I stood up quickly and got out of my row easily, the two boys who had been there before were already gone. I made my way to the stage and the door, thankful that my nerves weren't as bad as I'd expected them to be.
We were led down a hallway, past lines of young people standing and waiting in front of doors. One by one, our group of five was assigned to a different line. Each line was a mashup of Erudite, Candor and Amity as Abnegation and Dauntless hadn't been called yet.
"Ok, you are in this line," the kind Abnegation lady said to me, gesturing to the back of a line, making me the fifth person in it.
"Thank you," I murmured as I took my place.
Now there's nothing to do but wait.
So what did you think?!? I know it's shorter, but two updates in one day?!? Unheard of from me, right?
Ok, so, is it boring? Am I going to slow? Please vote, comment and share to let me know how I'm doing!! :)
