The Right Thing
"Jess, the babies need you. I need you. We can't be away from you."
"The babies would stay with me, here at my parents. They said it's okay if I stay for a while. They understand..."
"What? No. Jessica I can't leave you three behind. I won't! You are my family. Why can't you just come home? I said I was sorry. Why wouldn't you talk to me about this before your parents? This came out of no where!"
"You said you want me to get better. I think it would be best for me if I stay here and clear my head. I'll get a therapist and make myself a better mom for the babies. If you want me to get better you'll let me stay. And this isn't about our fight, this is about me. I need this." Jessica says taking his hands. Her eyes were filled with fear. She knew Danny wouldn't want her to stay.
"You can get better in New York. I'll take off work for a while, I'll quit my job, I'll be a better dad. Just please don't stay. I can't let you go."
"Danny, stop."
"Please, baby. Think this over."
"I have been thinking it over, Danny! I'm tired of feeling like this. I'm so upset in New York. I'm not asking you to quit your job. And you are already an amazing dad, I just have to stay here. And I'm not going anywhere, honey. I love you, I do."
"I can't bare not seeing you and the babies. Not coming home to you three after work will be so painful. What if we drift? What if you end up wanting to stay here? Jessica what if the babies forget who I am?"
"We will have to see where this takes us. But the babies won't forget you."
"What the hell Jessica? Don't do this!"
"Danny! Please! If you love me, you'll let me stay here and get better. Just until after Sarah's wedding."
"I won't allow the babies to stay. I'm their father! I love you too much."
"Damn you! You're being selfish!" Jessica yells
"You are-"
Danny stops and sighs. "I take that back, I'm sorry. This is just a lot to take in. Are you not happy with me?"
"Danny" Jessica bites her lip and puts her head down.
"Well, are you? I need to know?"
"I'm just confused right now. My mind is all over the place. You need to give me time to take this all in. It's going to be hard for me too. Just remember I need to stay so I can take time to work with myself and my feelings. I'm doing this all so I can be a better partner and mother. The babies won't forget you and I won't leave you... give me a few weeks. You can come back to Minnesota for Sarah's wedding and we can see each other. We can figure what's next. I love you. If I go home it will just get worse for me. You see how cold we've been with each other. That isn't healthy either..."
"I just don't know what to do. I'll quit my job and find something out here."
"This isn't permanent, Danny. I can't ask you to do that. Maybe if we just have time away from each other..."
"But people who love each other don't need breaks." Danny looks at Jessica and breaks into tears. It was very rare that Danny ever cried. This was the hardest thing Jessica wanted to do but she had to do it. She was tired of being unhappy in New York. She missed Minnesota too much. She missed her home town, her family, and friends. The pain of missing Minnesota made her depression even worse. She just needed to clear her head and find herself. She wanted to better herself for the babies. She was willing to do whatever it takes. Even if that means taking a break from Danny. It would be hard to be away from Danny, but she knew it was only right.

Tuesday-
After talking it over many times Danny finally agreed for Jessica to stay. As hard as it was to say okay he knew it was what Jessica needed. Danny was heartbroken to leave Jessica and the babies but he had to go back to work. Before he left the four of them spent lots of time together. His plane was leaving early Tuesday morning. A taxi was coming to get him while Jessica kept the rental car.
The morning he left was very emotional for Danny. Something in the back of his head was saying that Jessica might not ever come back home.
The four of them were up in the guest room. The babies were getting ready to go down for their morning nap.
Danny rocked them to sleep before he left.
"Daddy loves you two so much. You two and your mommy are my biggest blessings. I'm going to miss you but I'll see you soon. Just be good for mommy, okay? Before you know it I'll see you."
He rocked them back and fourth for a couple more minutes until they were out like a light.
Jessica and Danny put them in their bassinet then headed downstairs.
Danny's taxi had arrived. He said goodbye to George, Dorthy, and Albert then headed outside.
Jessica walked out with him.
"Have a safe trip home, okay?" Jessica says with watery eyes.
"I will... and I'll mail out your stuff and the babies too."
"Danny, I'm sorry." Jessica's lip quivers.
"Are you sure about this?" He says taking her hands.
Jessica bites her lip and nods continuously. "I'm sure."
Danny sighs then brings Jessica close to him. "I love you baby... if you think that this will help I will leave without you... But I'll be back. Okay?"
"Okay..." she nods
"Take care of yourself and the babies."
"I will... we'll call you everyday."
"I love you." He says
"I love you too."
Danny gives Jessica one last hug and kiss then gets in the taxi.
She waves goodbye as he taxi drives down the street. It was heartbreaking to send him home. Jessica just couldn't find the tears. She felt relived in a way.
Dorthy walked outside and put her arm around Jessica. "You're doing the right thing, Jessica."
"I am... I am doing the right thing." Jessica tells herself.
