Do I Call?
"My baby! Where is my baby?" Jessica cries as she races into the ER looking for Scarlett. Sam ran behind Jessica. He was just as frantic as she was.
"Ma'am, who are you looking for?" A nurse asks, rushing to Jessica.
"Scarlett Huston. She's two years old, had a seizure. I'm her mother!" Jessica cries
"Jessie, over here!" Albert calls, standing outside of a room.
Jessica and Sam run to him. He had both boys in his hands, screaming and crying. As much as Jessica wanted to tend to them, she needed to get to Scarlett first.
"Dad what happened to her? This can't be happening again!" Jessica cries
"Jessie, she's okay... she had a seizure and bumped her head. Your mother is with her now. You go in. I have the boys." Albert says as calmly as possible.
"I'll stay here and help your dad. You go, be with her." Sam says
"Thank you." She says rushing into the room.
Dorthy held Scarlett who was screaming hysterically in her arms as the doctor gave Scarlett a few shots in her head to numb her before they put in stitches. Jessica was a wreck seeing Scarlett like this. Blood was all over her face and clothes. It was a scary sight.
"I'm her mother. What's going on?" Jessica asks the doctors as she scoops up Scarlett and takes her mothers place.
"It seems to be she experienced a grand mal, that's a-"
"I know what that is... she has epilepsy. We were at John Hopkins almost a year ago... we thought we had them under control. This is her first one in a very long time." Jessica says filling them in
Scarlett cries in Jessica's arms, clenching onto her arms, afraid of all the doctors and nurses.
"Mama! Mama!" She screams
Jessica holds her close and kisses her over and over. "It's okay, Scarlett. Breathe baby girl, just breathe." Jessica says calmly
Dorthy stood in the corner. She was a mess.
"We would like some scans and would like to call Hopkins to get her notes. Your mother filled us in on her medications. With the dosage and medication she is taking, a grand mal should not be happening." The one doctor says
The doctors were not being calm at all. They were making Jessica's head spin. This seizure came out of no where... not only did it come out of no where but it led to a serious injury as well. Jessica was afraid of what was going to happen next. Her specialists in Maryland said that if she started relapsing, it could possibly mean surgery. Even though they've dealt with her epilepsy before, every single seizure she had was just as scary as the first. All negative thoughts swam through Jessica's head.
"Please! Stop!" Scarlett cries as the nurse tries to calm her down.
She kicks and screams, refusing for anyone but her mother to touch her.
"Baby, please relax. It's going to be okay. You won't feel a thing. You just need to let the doctors help you.... I know you're scared baby, but breathe. Just breathe with mommy." Jessica says soothingly as she starts to take deep breathes then blow in and out.
Scarlett slowly starts to calm down once Jessica gets a grip of herself. If there is one person that could read Jessica like a book, it was Scarlett. She sensed every feeling radiating off Jessica, especially right now.
"That's such a good girl." The nurse says as they lay her back.
Jessica doesn't let go of Scarlett. She just stays calm and tries to keep Scarlett calm.
"Look at you! You're so brave, baby!" Jessica smiles as the doctor slowly starts to begin the stitches.
Jessica, Dorthy, and the nurses keep Scarlett relaxed and let the doctors do her stitches.

The waiting room-
Sam and Albert were able to get Wyatt and Jack calmed down after a crazy hour.
The two men laid back in the chairs, anxiously waiting to hear an update.
"Is this the first time this has happened to her?" Sam asks, oblivious to the past.
"No, sadly.... I'm pretty sure a year ago today was her first seizure. They just kept coming and coming. She was diagnosed with epilepsy. It was devastating for Danny and Jessica. They did everything they could to make sure she got the best doctors. They spent a few weeks in Maryland trying to figure out a plan since the seizures got so bad... they put her on medication that seemed to be working. This is her first seizure after being in Maryland. Doctors said if it stops working, which is most likely bound to happen, that she would be a candidate for surgery. I'm hoping that isn't the case here." Albert says
"I had no idea. Gosh, the poor little girl. I really hope this was a one time thing."
"I do too... but sadly, it might not be."

After Scarlett got her stitches she went up to get some scans to make sure everything was okay after hitting her head so hard.
After her scans Scarlett fell right asleep. She was drowsy from the medication they had given her. It made things a lot easier for Jessica having her resting. She needed to relax. Scarlett was petrified of doctors, nurses, and hospitals.
Dorthy was able to update Sam and Albert while Jessica was waiting for the doctors to come back with scan results. As she waited, she had the specialist from Maryland on the phone, making sure they were prepared to come to Minnesota or Jessica come to them if need be. Jessica only trusted them and their judgement.
"How is the little princess?" Albert asks
"Resting. She got seven stitches. They took some scans and now we wait." Dorthy says
"I feel so bad." Sam says
"Me too... Sam, do you mind driving Albert and the boys back to our place? It's been a long night. I think they need some rest. Jack will be okay with out Jessica tonight. I'm hoping to be home to help if Jess needs to stay here with Scarlett."
"Of course, no problem. Give Scarlett and Jessica my best please... and call with anymore updates or if they need anything."
"Of course. Thank you, Sam. Sorry your night was cut short." Dorthy frowns
"It's alright. Her kids come first, no matter what."

About thirty minutes later the doctors come back in with Scarlett's scans.
"How do they look?" Jessica asks nervously
The doctor sighs "Not amazing. Her doctors from Maryland sent over the most recent scans... there could be a possibility that her medication is slowly becoming ineffective." A doctor says
"But we are hoping that's not the case." Another says
"So what does this mean? Should I take her back to Maryland? Have them come here?" Jessica asks nervously
"It May be best for them to come here. Maryland is a big trip for her to take right now... a little risky too since she just had such a major seizure."
"So, it's just a waiting game. Wait and see what happens, if she has another?"
"Sadly, yes. I only assume you want the best of the best working on your little girl. I'd be glad to stick around and help if your doctors do come to her. Hopefully, surgery won't be an option. But, we have to see."
Jessica covers her face and begins to cry. She thought this nightmare was over. She thought Scarlett would be okay. She had been doing so well... she was the happiest, healthiest, little girl. Jessica would hate to see her go through this all again. Surgery... she couldn't get surgery off her mind.

Jessica and the doctors felt most comfortable having Scarlett stay over night. Jessica had a few members from Scarlett's team in Maryland taking the first flight to Minnesota. This was no joke. Jessica had to take this extremely serious, of course... it was her little girl.
Before Dorthy left to go home and help Albert with the boys, she made sure Jessica was calm and relaxed.
"Thank you for watching the boys, tonight. I just really need to be here." Jessica says
"Of course, my love! You get some rest. Call me if anything happens." Dorthy says giving her a hug
"I'm so scared...." Jessica whispers harshly
"I know, baby. But you need to stay positive."
"She's only two! She doesn't deserve this. She's so little." Jessica cries
"But she's so strong."
Jessica wipes her tears and huffs. She knew she had to ask.... her mother was the only person to ask.
"Do I call him?" Jessica asks nervously
//-//
"Help! Please!" Jessica calls for nurses as Scarlett has her third seizure of the night. They were spread out and had a few hours in between each of them, but that wasn't good. Never had they been so close to each other and so aggressive. Jessica could not control them on her own.
"Ma'am, please step back." The nurses say as they shove Jessica to the side and clear the area for Scarlett.
She moves into a corner and cries harder and harder. This was it. This was the moment Jessica was so afraid of.
//-//
The next day, a little bit after lunch Jessica's doctors that she brought in and Minnesota doctors joined brains to figure out what was going on with Scarlett.
Jessica waited anxiously in the room with Scarlett. She was luckily able to distract her. Dorthy brought over some of her toys and books to keep her occupied.
Sam, the angel he was, stopped by with some coffee for Jessica.
They were able to branch off for a moment so Jessica could have a little meltdown away from her mother and Scarlett.
"She's a tough girl.... I believe she'll be able to push through this. She needs your strength to do that though..." Sam says
"I just can't believe this is happening now. I thought it all went away." She cries
"Something much deeper is bothering you right now. Are you debating whether or not to call him?" Sam asks
Jessica sighs "Yes. I don't want him around, but if she needed surgery and god forbid something happened, I wouldn't be able to live with myself if he wasn't here. I know it's the right thing to do, but I'm scared. It's been five months. I haven't heard a single thing from him. I like it that was. But, he's her father. He should be here." Jessica says sternly
"It's completely up to you. How about this, plan it by ear. Wait to see what the doctors have to say, if it's surgery or something else and you won't be going home any time soon, call him. But call him off a phone that isn't yours. Listen closely to him... if he seems not right, hang up. If he seems good, tell him to get his ass here for his daughter and his daughter only. Don't be afraid, I know your father won't leave your side, and no one will let him hurt you or the kids." Sam says, sternly, taking her hand.
She wipes her tears and falls into his arms. "Surgery.... she can't have surgery." Jessica cries
//-//
"Jessica, I know you don't want to hear this, but surgery is Scarlett's best option." A doctor from Maryland says
Jessica, her mothers and father, and all of the doctors from Maryland and Minnesota sit around a table together.
Jessica bursts into tears immediately. Surgery scared her, especially when it's her little girl going under the knife.
"Surgery? Is that our last resort?" Jessica cries
"We hate to consider it a last resort. This is Scarlett's best option. Miss Lange, we told you back in Maryland that her seizures can come back. Especially since she's so young she has a higher risk of growing out of medication. When she grows, her epilepsy does too." A doctor stresses
"Her meds have stopped working. She's having seizures less than twelve hours apart. It's more dangerous for that to happen then the surgery."
"But surgery.... isn't it too risky? She's almost three. She's too young!" Jessica cries
"Jessica, if we don't get this fixed now, her brain can go under lots of damage. Scarlett can grow up having lots of issues. Seizures are hard on the brain. Her little brain is not strong enough for the powerful seizures she's been having. Scarlett can grow up never being able to drive a car, difficulty holding a job, and can be at a very high risk for academic failure, anxiety, and depression."
Hearing all of this was like a stab in the heart for Jessica. As scared as she was to put Scarlett under the knife, she knew it would be okay and it's the right thing to do. She trusted Scarlett's team more than anything. If they said she needed surgery, she needs surgery. No doubt about it.
"Okay." She agrees
"We'd like to get her in Sunday morning. You'll have a few days to prepare her and yourselves. We will be preparing for the operation making sure everything goes smoothly and we have a solid plan. Jessica, you can trust us. Believe in us. Scarlett will come out of this happier and healthier. She won't have to deal with these anymore. It's better now than later." A doctor says sincerely
Jessica wipes her tears and cries. "I trust you. I don't want her to go through this any longer than she has to. You just have to understand, she's my little girl. Everything needs to go perfect when you put her under."
"Of course. I'll treat her like she's my own. Just like I do with every other patient I have. I promise you, Jessica."

Later that night-
Scarlett wouldn't be leaving the hospital until after her surgery, so they needed to make her room and homey as possible. Albert and Sam brought over a lot of her bigger toys and Dorthy did some decorating. The doctors recommended this to keep her as calm and happy as possible.
As nervous as Jessica was, she needed to keep a brave face for Scarlett.
Albert brought Wyatt and Jack over. Jessica thought it would be best for her twin to keep her company. Little Jack needed Jessica as well. He was still so little and dependent on her.
"You missed mommy feeding you, huh? You better slow down, you're hurting me little guy!" Jessica chuckles as she sits in the corner feeding Jack.
The men excused themselves from the room.
"Mama, Scarlett shakes again?" Wyatt asks with sadness
Jessica sighs and nods her head. "Yes, but they're going to fix her shakes." Jessica says
"Good, so we can play?"
"Yes, so you can play and Scarlett can be healthy!"
"I strong, Wyatt!" She says holding up her arms
"That's right!" Dorthy chuckles
"I think chubs junior is all done, finally." Jessica chuckles as she cleans him and herself up then starts burping him.
"He missed his mama. Look at him holding onto you."
"I know! Was last night so traumatic without me? Oh you poor baby! What a mamas boy." Jessica chuckles
Dorthy sits down next to Jessica and hands her the phone. She was confused.
"What's that for?" Jessica asks looking down at her mothers phone
"Jess, I think he should be here." Dorthy says as all of the risks of the surgery swim in her head.
Jessica sighs and starts to tremble.
"I'm so scared." She whispers
"No matter what, you'll be safe. But, if he sounds okay on the phone, I think he needs to at least know. Zoe and John will be here to keep him straight if he needs it." Dorthy says sincerely
As much as Dorthy resented Danny and didn't want him around, she knew that Scarlett needed her father and Danny had all the rights in the world to know that his daughter was undergoing such a risky surgery.
"Okay.... I'll call." She says
Jessica leaves the room and goes into the bathroom. She closes the door and dials his number.
It rings and rings.
"Hello?"
Jessica hears Danny and her heart drops to the floor. It had felt like it had been so long. But he sounded great and she was shocked.
"Danny." She struggles to say
"Yes? Who is this?" He asks
"It's me." She says
Danny pauses... he knew immediately that it was Jessica. He could sense she was about to cry and that something was wrong.
He clears his throat. He didn't know what to say.
"It's Scarlett... she's having surgery. The seizures are back and worse than before." Jessica cries
"Don't let any doctors where ever you are touch her unless it is her specialist." He says
"I didn't.... I called them and they gave me the final word, that this needed to happen." Jessica says
Danny wanted to cry... he didn't know what this phone call meant. If Jessica would allow him to come, if Scarlett would be okay, he had no idea.
"You coming is up to you. I just thought you should know. We are in Minnesota at the hospital right outside of Cloquet. But if you come, I don't want any drama. God help me I'll-"
"I'm better, Jessica. Truly, I'm much better. I'm in a good place. I'd really appreciate you letting me come. And I appreciate you calling me. No drama, I promise. I just want to be there." He says sincerely
Jessica believed Danny right of the bat. He sounded great. She couldn't argue.
"Okay. The surgery is Sunday."
