May 19th, the day of Scarlett's surgery-

Jessica and Danny didn't leave Scarlett's side, especially the hours leading up to her surgery.

Around four in the morning the nurses came in to her room to prep her for surgery. She had to wake up early and was extremely fussy and scared.

Jessica's family would be on their way to the hospital around six. Since the hospital was not the place to be for Wyatt and Jack, they stayed with Ann.

"Mama, no! No!" Scarlett screams as the nurse tries to put in her IV.

"Scarlett, I know baby but you need to be strong. It's just a quick pinch sweetie." Jessica says holding her down

"You got this baby girl." Danny says rubbing her forehead.

She was burning up and screaming her brains out. It was very stressful and very scary. Jessica needed to stay strong for her and keep her composure.

"You're doing so well, Scarlett." The nurse says

About ten minutes later, Scarlett's specialist from John Hopkins walked in to talk with Jessica and Danny before the surgery.

"Good morning, how's it going?" The doctor says

"She's getting nervous." Danny says

"I just wanted to talk with you two. I know, Jessica, you know what's going to happen. Just to fill you in Danny, the surgery will last about six hours, maximum. After the surgery Scarlett will be in the ICU. Only you and Jessica will be able to see her for the next twenty four hours. After twenty four hours we will move her back into this room. We are hoping, since she's so young, that you'll only be here for five days. And of course, before you leave we will discuss recovery at home. She will probably be asleep until later tonight, but the pain will be a lot. I'm hoping that we won't need to give her anything too strong. But, we are very confident going in and we are more than ready to make sure your little girl has the most normal and healthy life after today." The doctor says happily

"Six hours?" Danny says

"Yes, it's a very intensive surgery." The other doctor says

Jessica tries not to cry, but it was very hard.

"Thank you." Danny says, speaking for both him and Jessica.

An hour later the nurses were rolling Scarlett into the O.R hall. It was only moments before Jessica and Danny would have to say goodbye for a few hours. Thankfully, Scarlett was relaxed due to the drugs and didn't put up a fuss.

"I love you baby girl... mommy will see you soon. Just close your eyes, okay?" Jessica says rubbing her forehead. Tears rolled down Jessica's face. Her body trembled. She had never been so afraid in her life.

"Okay" She whispers

"You're the toughest little girl that daddy has ever met. I'm so proud of you sweetie." He says kissing her

"It's time to go mommy and daddy." The nurse says

"I love you baby" Jessica says giving her a quick kiss

Scarlett slowly started to drift off so it was the perfect time to roll her in.

As Jessica watches the nurses take her daughter away she fell to the ground, scared out of her mind, bawling her eyes out.

Danny held onto her and comforted her. He had never seen her so upset. This would probably be the hardest six hours of their life. The life of their two year old was in the hands of doctors.

"She'll be okay..." Danny whispers

"I'm so scared." She cries

An hour later-

After Jessica calmed down, her and Danny went down to the hospital cafe for breakfast. It was unbelievably uncomfortable being alone with him. Nothing was the same, Jessica always wondered if there would ever be a lingering spark, but this week proved otherwise.

"I heard about your business." Danny says

Jessica smiles "Yes, we opened at the beginning of the week."

"Congrats, I always had a feeling that was a big dream of yours." Danny says

"Sam and I made our dreams come true with lots of hard work. It's been hard, especially with a newborn on your boob 24/7." She chuckles

When Jessica mentions Danny he goes quite. Knowing Jessica would be spending every day with her ex drove him insane.

"What have you been doing? You look good." Jessica says

"I got a new job in Connecticut. I'm working with a new firm, it's great." He says

"So you moved?" She asks

"Yes, I bought a house about twenty minutes from my office. Just off the water, it's beautiful. Three bedroom house. Everything is set up for everyone, whenever you're ready." He says

Jessica was glad that they could be civil, but Danny bringing up Jessica moving back in irritated her.

"Danny, I'm not moving back in with you." She says

Danny sighs "I know. Whenever you're ready for me to see the kids again. I'm clean, I'm better now. Jessica, I'm truly truly sorry. I ruined our family, I hurt you, I'll never forgive myself and I know you'll never forgive me. But, it's important for me to say how sorry I am." Danny says from the bottom of his heart.

Jessica could really sense that Danny was truly sorry. Before it just felt like he felt obligated to apologize to make Jessica happy. This time, she really knew that he was sorry and had changed for the better.

"Thank you." Jessica says

"You don't have to forgive me. I really really did bad things. I deserved to be locked up. But I'm thankful that you didn't put me behind bars."

"I'm not ready to forgive you, but I know that you're sorry. I would never lock you up unless you hurt our children. I know that you were hurting Daniel. Sam should have never come to the hospital, I know that's what sparked it." Jessica says

"I'm glad you two are together now." He says

Jessica clears her throat and chuckles. "Danny, we aren't together, just business partners."

"Oh, but Evan-"

"Evan What?" Jessica says with wide eyes

"Evan has helped me a lot through my recovery. He came out to New York a lot and was really great. When I talked to him he said you and Sam... well, it doesn't matter now, does it?" He chuckles awkwardly

When Jessica heard that Danny was in touch Evan and Evan had been in New York she put together lots of puzzle pieces and lies that Sarah had told her. Her eye began to twitch she was so angry. She didn't say anything because she wanted nothing more that for her Children's father to be healthy.

"He's a good friend." She says

"If you don't mind, I'd like to stay around for a while until I have to return to work. I'll stay at my parents. Do you have a place of your own so that I can come visit, maybe help you out and spend some time with the kids. I really miss them and I want nothing more then to have a relationship with them." He says sincerely

"I'm with my parents still."

"... your dad probably won't want me around."

"Do you blame him?" Jessica says

"No, I broke his promise. Trust me, it's haunted me every night."

Jessica smirks "Stay for a while. The kids will be glad to see you."

Six hours later-

In the waiting room everyone gathered around the TV screen waiting for Scarlett's patient status to change to "Recovery".

"It's been more then six hours. Almost seven... she should be out by now!" Jessica says nervously

"I bet they're just sowing her up now. Don't worry, if something was wrong they'd tell you." Dorthy says

"That little girl can handle almost anything." Jane says

Then, Sarah runs in. Earlier Jessica had wanted her there. But now, she didn't want to see her after what Danny had told her about Evan.

Sarah came to give Jessica a hug but Jessica didn't hug her back. She turned her back to Sarah and watched the screen. Sarah immediately sensed that something was going on.

"Jess, Hey." Sarah says

Jessica turns to talk to someone else.

"Recovery!" Albert jumps

"Thank goodness!" Jessica says

Danny hugs her and smiles. Then, a nurse comes over to Jessica.

"Huston?"

"That's us!" Danny says

"Scarlett is done... she's in the ICU and the surgeons are with her waiting to speak to you." The nurse says

Jessica turns to her family and gives them all hugs.

"Keep us updated. I'm so happy it's all over now." Dorthy cries

Sarah goes to give Jessica another hug but she moves away quickly and walks away with Danny and the nurse.

"Alright.... we should go get Wyatt and Jack. It's getting late." Dorthy says to Albert

"Sounds good. We'll see you girls tomorrow." Albert says to Jane and Sarah

"Alright, bye mom and dad."

"Bye everyone." Sarah says

When they leave Sarah walks out with Jane.

She was so curious as to why Jessica dissed her twice.

When the nurses took Jessica and Danny to Scarlett, it was very hard to see their daughter in the shape she was. Her head was wrapped up, her face was swollen, and she looked so much smaller. Scarlett looked lifeless.

"The surgery went great. When we first got in she had a seizure, so there was a bit of a delay. Other than that the surgery was more than successful." The doctor says proudly

"Really? So no more seizures?" Jessica asks with tears in her eyes

"No more seizures Miss Lange." He says

Jessica breaks down and hugs both doctors. "Thank you... thank you so much." She cries

The whole night Jessica and Danny were wide awake. They sat on both sides of Scarlett waiting for her to wake up. They knew when she did it would be traumatic since she'd be in lots of pain. But they didn't want her to be scared. They wanted her to wake up to lots of love.

As Jessica kept her eyes on Scarlett she began to drift and Danny noticed.

"Hey, you should close your eyes. The doctors said she probably won't be up until the morning." Danny whispers

"No, I want to be there when she wakes up." Jessica says rubbing her eyes

"Jess... it might not be easy to see when she does." Danny says

She shakes her head then chugs another cup of coffee. "I'm staying awake."

The next morning Jessica woke up with her body leaning on the bed. When she realizes that she had fell asleep she jerked up and looked to Scarlett.

Sadly, she was not awake yet. It had been about twelve hours, Jessica was becoming worried.

She then looked across the bed. Danny was no where to be seen.

She stands up, leaves Scarlett a kiss, then walks out to find Danny.

She then sees him through the glass door freaking out, yelling, at the doctors. She rushes to see what's going on.

"Daniel? What's going on?" She says running over

"You said she'd be up by now... what's going on! You said the surgery went perfectly!" He yells, ignoring Jessica.

"Danny? Is Scarlett okay? What's going on."

"She should be up by now. But she isn't." Danny says to Jessica

"But... doesn't it take a while?" She asks the doctor

The doctor sighs "Usually six hours, max. It seems Scarlett hasn't come out of it yet." The doctor says

"We hired you because you are the best! What did you do to her?" Danny shouts

"Danny, Stop!" Jessica says, trying to quiet him down

"I'll go in and see what's going on. You have to remember, your daughter is smaller then most two year olds. It may just take longer for her to wake up. I assure you everything is okay."

The doctor excused himself and leaves Jessica and Danny alone.

"Danny? What's gotten into you? You should have expected this. This is normal." Jessica says

"I'm just stressed... I really need a drink Jessica. I'm going crazy." He says twiddling his fingers

"Just come sit. Take a few breathers. You don't need alcohol." She says taking him to a chair

"I didn't think I'd be this scared."

"She's okay now... she's just sleeping. It's best for her to sleep..." Jessica insists

"I'm sorry for making a scene... I'm just anxious. Usually, I'd drink in times like these."

"But you aren't like that anymore. Don't forget that."

"I know... I know."

"Mommy, daddy? Your little girl is asking for you." A nurse says peaking around the corner

"She's up?" The jump up and smile

"Yes, right as the doctor walked in."

Jessica and Danny run to Scarlett. She was laying down with her eyes wide open. Jessica could tell that she had been crying. It was pain as she watched the doctors start a drip to take away the pain.

"Baby girl... hi baby." Jessica cries kneeling down

"No shakes?"

"No shakes baby girl. You're cured." Jessica giggles

"I'm so proud of my princess. You're a badass, scar." Danny says

Jessica laughs and Scarlett smiles. "Ass?" She repeats

"Bad ass. You're a bad ass." Danny repeats

"Daniel." Jessica whispers with a smile

"What? She is."

Scarlett smiles and slowly closes her eyes. "I hurts." She whispers

"I know... but it will get better. The nurses are going to make it better." Jessica says

When Danny and Jessica saw Scarlett up and smiling, they were beyond relief. Finally, they overcame this huge bump in the road and would never have to worry about it again. Recovery would be tricky, but Scarlett could get through it.
