Chapter Six

"It all began when my grandfather left Roanoke with a few other men," Virginia told us, continuing to draw in the dirt. "I was only a baby when he left, so I don't remember him very well. As soon as they left, everything began to go down hill. We were all struggling to survive. Crops weren't growing, and everyone was either ill or becoming ill. Some of us even died. That changed when next year, the Croatan Indians came. They killed off the men and took in the women and children. The women either chose to wed, or was forced to wed one of the Indian men, while the children learned their lifestyle. Two years passed, and I turned three. Rumors spread throughout the village that my grandfather was back, but the Croatan Indians hid the village, and forbade us from greeting him. A while after, he left, just as my mom gave birth to my little brother, Tahkeome. Two more years passed, and a terrible sickness spread through the village. Many of us died, and I was one of them. However," Virginia sighed. "My soul is never at peace, until someone figures out how to make it at peace."

Black Sun and I stood there, silently thinking.

"I think I know," I suddenly said, Virginia and Black Sun looking at me. "People need to know what happened to Roanoke so it's no longer a mystery. Maybe that will be able to put your soul at rest. However-"

"What's the problem?" Virginia asked me.

"If I was to tell people about Roanoke, then more people would come," I bit my lip. "Back at my home, we call this island 'cursed' and that no one should go on the island, or else they would die. If they knew that this wasn't the case, then they would come here and wipe out all of the Croatans, and I can't have that happen."

"So, how are we supposed to help Virginia then?" Black Sun asked me.

"I-I don't know," I replied, rubbing my arm. I turned to Virginia. "I'm sorry."

Virginia had her head down, her hair covering her face.

"Virginia?"

"You two are useless."

Virginia raised her head, tears streaming down her face.

"USELESS!" She screamed, pointing at us.

Startled, Black Sun and I took a step back from the girl.

"Why would I ever think that I could trust you two?!?" Virginia asked angrily. "That was the only way my spirit could be at rest! Now, I have to wander this island forever, and it's all your fault! You!" She pointed her finger at me. "I thought that you would be different, but I guess not. You pale skins are all the same! Not caring about anyone else but yourselves!"

And with that, she fled, disappearing into thin air.
