Chapter Five
I followed Askuwheteau as he led me to the center of the village, Black Sun following right behind us.
"Where is your father taking me?" I whispered to Black Sun.
"This is where we hold our 'Welcoming Ceremony'," Black Sun replied. "You are becoming part of our tribe."
I just nodded, and continued to follow Askuwheteau. The Native Americans all watched as we finally approached the center of the village. All of the Native Americans gathered around us in a circle as Askuwheteau held up his hands.
"Fellow brothers and sisters of this village!" Askuwheteau announced. "We have a pale skin!"
Askuwheteau motioned for me to go to his side. Black Sun nodded, and I hesitantly made my way over to him. I heard the murmurs of the surrounding Native Americans.
"She has come here to study us, but now she has changed her mind and she is going to join our family! Her name is White Star!"
The Native Americans shouted in happiness, and began to chant my name.
"White Star! White Star! White Star!"
I felt my face form into a smile.
"Child, turn to me, and kneel," Askuwheteau said.
I obeyed, and he took out a necklace that was full of white beads, and one miscellaneous animal tooth. He placed it around my neck, and then placed a feather crown on my head. He then held out his hand, and I took it. He helped me stand up, and he took out a bowl of ashes. I closed my eyes as he drew a star on each cheek, and a crescent moon on my forehead right between my eyebrows. I opened my eyes just as Black Sun and Blooming Blossom placed a brown cloak on my shoulders.
"Welcome to the family, White Star."

I sat on a rock overlooking the sea, thinking. I still couldn't shake the feeling that the ghost of Virginia Dare was trying to tell me something. Something important.
"Mind if I join you?"
I looked up to see Black Sun standing above me. I silently moved over and he sat down.
"What are you thinking about?" Black Sun asked me.
"The ghost of Virginia Dare," I replied, placing my head in my hands. "I feel like she was trying to tell me something, but I just don't know what."
Black Sun nodded, and we sat there in silence, not saying anything.
"If you want, we can go back to our old village," Black Sun finally said.
I nodded, smiling at him.
"Let's get back to the village," Black Sun said, standing up. "Father is making dinner."
He held out his hand, and I took it. Hand in hand, we strolled back to the village.

Later that night Black Sun and I made our way to the old village, the full moon's light guiding our way. It was while before we made it, and there we saw her.
Virginia was sitting on the ground, drawing in the dirt.
"Virginia?" I asked quietly.
Virginia stopped what she was doing, and looked out way. The cheery playfulness of her eyes were gone, replaced with sadness and longing.
"It was here many years ago when Roanoke fell," Virginia said, beginning to draw in the dirt again.
