Bonnie left the Salvatore house and was torn on whether she should start working on finding a witch for the daylight enchantment or find Elena and finally face her after everything. The call she got from Caroline made that decision for her when she was halfway home, so she detoured to Elena's house. Elena was currently sobbing on Caroline's shoulder when she got there, and Bonnie realized that she didn't really have anything to worry about. As much as she despised that future Elena, this one wasn't the same person. This was just a hurting seventeen-year-old girl. Bonnie slipped in on Elena's other side and wrapped them both in a group hug. "I-I don't have anything left," Elena sobbed. "J-Jeremy's gone, Jenna, John, my parents, now Stefan is...he's..." she couldn't get any more words out.
Bonnie knew that she shouldn't know about Stefan yet so she asked gently, "Stefan's what?"
"Stefan traded himself for the cure for Damon. He owes Klaus ten years of service," Caroline filled her in before turning her attention back to Elena. "But you still have us. Me and Bonnie. Just like since we were kids. We're not going anywhere."
"No we're not," Bonnie assured her, guilt crashing on her again. Elena hadn't been so bad last time. She'd been bad, but not like this. Losing Jeremy had been the last straw. That meant it was up to her to fix it. "We'll get you through this. Promise. And we'll find a way to get Stefan back too. I'm sorry I couldn't save Jeremy."
"We know you tried your best," Caroline said comfortingly, squeezing them both tighter, able to hear the guilt and sorrow in Bonnie's voice. Jeremy had been Bonnie's boyfriend. She must be taking this hard too.
"I-I can't bury someone else. I just can't. I-I don't know..." Elena cried on their shoulders.
"Hey, it's okay. We'll be right here with you," Caroline promised, not sure what more she could do. "Do you need a place to stay until your birthday? You know my mom will be glad to have you."
"N-no. A-Alaric is gonna stay and—and look after me," Elena said miserably.
Alaric got back with another bag of his stuff and some takeout a little before dinnertime. He'd basically been living there for a few weeks already, but now it was official for almost two more months so he needed more of his stuff there. Between him, Caroline, and Bonnie, they managed to coax Elena into eating about half her meal. Caroline and Bonnie stayed the night too, cuddled up with Elena in her bed.
The next day was Jeremy's funeral and Caroline and Bonnie intended to be by Elena's side through that as well, but when they got there and Liz was barely holding it together Caroline was torn. Bonnie told her to go on. She could take care of Elena and Alaric slipped in on Elena's other side to help provide support as Caroline went to help her mother whose guilt over killing Jeremy was eating her alive. After the funeral, Elena asked for some time alone, so Bonnie let her be. She did warn Ric to keep a good eye on her though. Make sure she didn't try and hurt herself.
Bonnie decided to take that opportunity to copy the daylight spell and then get some rings to spell with it once she found a witch. She would decide who could get the full legacy later. Her problem was that most of the witches she knew were younger than her, and just kids or not even born yet in some cases. She'd mentored quite a few young witches later in life. She might just hold onto it all to give to one of them. She couldn't wait on this spell though. She found a ring for herself and one for Elena in case it was ever needed and also grabbed one of her father's old fraternity rings for Enzo whenever they managed to get him out and called it a night. She would work on finding a witch tomorrow. It wasn't like she planned on turning right away. She hoped to at least wait until they got Stefan back. Elena would be steadier which meant Caroline would have an easier time helping her and Damon didn't need anything else on his mind right now either.
Then again, maybe she wouldn't gift her family magic. She could make a fortune selling it instead. She would have eternity to live so she'd need a good amount of money. Vampires had to be careful with jobs after all. Anything too public could cause exposure and anything physical risked someone noticing the speed and strength if they slipped up. She would much rather devote her eternity to something other than menial jobs that she would have to change every few decades anyway if possible. She just didn't get the same kind of joy and satisfaction from that sort of thing as some did. Like Stefan. She could even sell each spell more than once unless someone paid a premium to keep it for themselves. That idea was definitely growing on her. It would be more work on her part, but it was something. The daylight spell could even be given in exchange for the rings as a sort of sample. Sure, witches who sold their family magic were somewhat looked down on in the community, but what did she care. She wasn't a witch anymore. That thought still threatened to break her into tears.
Bonnie wouldn't get around to finding a witch that day though and the rings got set aside for later. She got a call from Elena not long after breakfast asking her to come by. Once she got there, the first thing Elena asked was, "If we do a séance, can we talk to Jeremy? Say goodbye at least? And maybe Jenna too?"
"Humans don't go to the same place when they die. Not like Emily," Bonnie explained and was about to get into the fact that she didn't have her magic anymore anyway, but Elena cut her off with another question first.
"Then can you do a tracking spell to find Stefan at least?" she asked hopefully.
"I don't have my magic anymore," she said sadly.
"What? Why?" Elena asked with a frown.
"Trying to resurrect someone is against the natural order. There is always a price to pay for that," Bonnie told her. Neither sentence was a lie per se. Just arranged in such a way to give her the wrong impression.
"But it didn't even work, so how can they punish you for it?" Elena asked confusedly.
"I proved that I had no respect for the natural order and thus didn't deserve my magic." Another sentence that wasn't actually a lie. It was just a different incident that caused it. One that /did/ work.
"That's...awful. I'm so sorry," Elena said sympathetically pulling her into a hug.
"Thanks. I'll be okay," Bonnie sniffled. "It was worth it to try, you know?"
"Yeah. I get that. And...thank you for trying. I just wish it hadn't cost so much," Elena said sadly. Jeremy was Bonnie's boyfriend though. Of course, she would have tried. That helped Elena not feel so bad about it. Since it wasn't just for her.
"I'll still try to help you find Stefan though. We're just limited to internet searches and I might be able to figure out how to track a phone too," Bonnie told her.
"I would appreciate that, yeah," Elena said gratefully. "You should know though...Damon's helping too," she said nervously.
"I would imagine. Stefan is his brother, after all," Bonnie replied.
"You're...okay with that? I mean, I know you and Damon kind of hate each other and all, but..."
"Damon and I made peace," Bonnie told her. "We're...not exactly friends yet, but not hostile anymore."
"How did that happen?" Elena asked surprised.
"All this mess helped me understand him a little better. The impossible situations he gets put in that have no good answer and he does the best he can and then everyone hates him for not doing better and..." Bonnie shrugged.
"Oh Bonnie," Elena pulled her into another hug. "No one hates you. We know you did your best."
"I know," Bonnie hugged her back. "But that's kinda the point. Damon always did his best too, but it was so easy to blame him, and we shouldn't have, you know?"
"Yeah, I guess I get that. But he's hurt a lot of people that didn't have anything to do with that either. And he doesn't even care," Elena pointed out.
"How do you know he doesn't care?" Bonnie asked. "Just because he doesn't show it doesn't mean he doesn't care."
"Okay, but..." Elena paused, wondering how she'd ended up on this side of the argument when she'd intended to be on the other side.
"Let's just say, I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt and giving him a chance," Bonnie told her. "So I'm good with him being part of the finding Stefan team."
"Okay, yeah. We'll leave it at that," Elena agreed, glad that she didn't have to confuse herself anymore.
