It was just another one of those days for Jung Taekwoon.
His daily routine started off normally as always; he woke up in a cozy bed, the covers up to his ears, brushed his teeth as normal, greeted his parents as normal, thanked his mother for breakfast as normal, went to his room as normal.
He sat with his kitten, Miko, as normal, petting it behind it's ears softly as he cuddled up against it. He listened intently to his parents farewells as they headed off for a day's hard work as normal before staring at the red string as normal, tugging on it once, twice, and one last time for good measure, having been a small habit of his as a child.
"Miko-ah, are you hungry?" Taekwoon cooed as the black haired kitten nibbled on his fingers, it's small paw keeping his hand in place. His sudden movement to get off the bed made her jump, scrambling to get out of his way. He hummed as he made his way out of his room, going to the cabinets to get a can of cat food.
"Miko!" He called out, waiting for the soft meow that always sounded, as normal. "Miko..?" He called out once again, his feet making it's way to the living room where his kitty would normally be. "Miko-ah?" He cooed. He stood there for a good ten seconds before the normality of his life tipped off balance.
What he was doing right now, was not considered normal.
"Come back!" The soft plea left his lips as he continued to chase down the feline that ran down the alley way. It stopped at the corner before turning back to look at Taekwoon. He continued to approach it slowly, not wanting it to run away again. Just as he leaped over to catch it, the cat jump onto the nearby ledge, disappearing almost into thin air. "Miko!" Taekwoon yelled out, exasperated.
He walked back and forth, biting at his nails as he thought about how much trouble he would be in if he told his parents he lost Miko... and that he went outside the walls he promised to stay behind. His head snapped to the side as he heard a loud crashing sound, one that could be a kitty jumping down onto a something. He followed it, his ears straining to hear the sound again before something weird reached his ears. Was someone crying? What could make someone so happy in an alleyway like this that they cry out of happiness?
He continued down the dark walkway, walking in soft steps to avoid making too much sound.
"Ah! I found y—" Taekwoon stopped short as his breath got stuck in his throat at the sight in front of him.
There was a man pressed against the wall, a inked hand on his mouth and another on his neck. That wasn't the part that scared him the most. His eyes trailed down the red string that was tied around the tainted hands pinky finger, the one that did what seemed like a million loops, only to trail to his own hands. He brought his hand up, staring at the red string of fate before his eyes flickered back to the black haired man before him. There was no mistaking it.
A sound escaped the other man's lips, fear evident in his eyes as he tried to reach for Taekwoon, only to have his head slammed back into the wall, the hand leaving his lips only to dig itself into his stomach in a sharp jab. The man doubled over, his eyes rolling behind his eyelids as it was a fatal K.O.
"I'll give you three seconds. Three seconds to get the fuck out of here." The inked man said, his glare making shivers run down Taekwoon's spine.
"B-But..." Taekwoon stuttered, raising his hand up to show the man, "L-Look! We're—" He stopped. What was he thinking? The man couldn't see the strings. Did Taekwoon even want the man to see the strings?
"One." The man whispered, making slow strides towards Taekwoon's shaking figure.
"W-wait!" Taekwoon cried out, hold his hands out in front of him. Panic settled in as he didn't know what to do. Oh the irony of it all. He had waited twenty something plus years to meet the person he'd love for the rest of his life and now that he was standing right in front of him, he didn't know how to feel. Happy? That's all he really knew for most of his life so he couldn't describe the heaviness on his chest as the man approached him. He felt... dangerous.
"Two." The man stopped right in front of him, his eyes narrowing as he stared down at the shorter male. Taekwoons breath quickened as his body started burning. This isn't how it was suppose to be. He was suppose to meet the person as fireworks flew around them, not flies from a nearby dumpster.
"I-I can't go." Taekwoon finally got out. He flinched away as the man let out a low growl, displeased with Taekwoon's words.
"I'm not asking you if you can or can't. I'm telling you to fucking leave." The man responded, the veins on his neck becoming more prominent as the shorter fueled his anger pass his limits of restraint. "Three."
A cry left Taekwoons lips as a hand dug itself into his hair, gripping it tightly, but that wasn't the worst pain. The burning of his wrist made him let out a scream. A hand quickly sealed his lips as his back hit the wall, more gently than he expected.
"Shut the fuck up. If they find us, you're dead." The man whispered next to his ears, "Why didn't you just... Fuck. This is such a pain in the ass." The hand left his hair, settling itself on the wall near his head, it's owner merely arm's length away.
Taekwoon's cries turned into whimpers as the sting of his wrist intensified. He brought his arm up, cradling it into his chest. He stared down at it as something began to appear on it. His other hand came up to grab it, rubbing at it to soothe the pain away.
"Yah, what's wrong? Your wrist hurts?" The man whispered, his hands reaching for Taekwoon's wrist. Before the latter could get it out of reach, the man had grabbed onto it, lifting it up so it was eye level. "It doesn't seem broken. Did you hit it against the wall? I didn't even slam you against it that hard..."
Taekwoon stared up at the man, his touch ceasing the pain, only a weird sensation of feather like writing on wrist. His eyes trailed down the man's feature, finding the worry that was etched on it a little unsettling but it was better than the pure rage that was on it mere seconds ago.
"K.W.S.?"
"What?" Taekwoon asked as he stared at him in confusion.
"K.W.S." The man repeated, looking at him weirdly, "It's on your wrist."
Taekwoon yanked his arm away from the other man, the pain coming back almost immediately. "Uwahh." His face contorted into pain as he stared down at the writing on his wrist. Before he could voice any complaints about the pain he was feeling, loud footsteps made it's way towards them.
"Fuck... Stay right here and don't fucking move. Keep your head down." The other instructed him, hands reaching up to pull the hood over almond hair. Taekwoons face felt flushed at the sudden pat on his head before he heard the popping of knuckles. Disobeying orders for the first time— okay, second time— in his life, Taekwoon looked up just as a commotion started itself.
To say he was traumatized at the sight would be saying the least.
"Are you okay..." The man paused as he handed him a bottle of water.
"J-Jung Taekwoon..." It was now the latter's turn to make a pregnant pause. "I'm fine, thank you."
"Kim Wonsik." The man grinned, his demeanor completely different from the one that Taekwoon had just experienced not too long ago. Wonsik sat himself next to Taekwoon on the bench, his knees touching the latter's as they were at a child's park and the seats weren't made for two men their size. "Man," he sighed, "It's been awhile since I got to fuck up some trash like that."
Or not.
"Why did you do it?" Taekwoon asked softly, "Does it make you happy?"
"Happy?" Wonsik chuckled, "Did I look happy?" When Taekwoon didn't respond, Wonsik continues, "Does your wrist still hurt? Think you broke it?"
"No." It had stopped hurting halfway through the chaos in the alleyway, the markings now dark and prominent against his pale skin.
"Hm." Wonsik sounded, grabbing onto it again. "K.W.S.? Kim Won Sik?" The other chuckled. "What does K.W.S. mean?"
"Kim Wonsik." Taekwoon repeated, scanning the others reaction.
"It's not good to lie." Wonsik said, "It was only funny when I said it." Taekwoons lips returned the small smile that curled the others lips, opening up the water bottle the tattooed man had so generously bought for him as an apology. He took a sip of it, sighing at the refreshed feeling that took over his body.
"So, what was a good boy like you doing back there?"
"Good boy? What makes you think I'm a good boy?" Taekwoon retorted sassily even though he had no right to deny the fact.
"Well, you aren't exactly the scariest person around the block and your mannerisms are too polite."
"I was looking for my cat." Taekwoon opted to say, ending the conversation of whether or not he was a child of god.
"Your cat?" Wonsik raised a brow sharply.
"Yes... my cat. You know, small and fluffy. Big eyes and pointy ea—"
"I know what a cat looks like." Wonsik interrupted, "But really? You don't chase something into a dark alley like that. If it were to jump off a bridge, would you go along with it?" Wonsik questioned, stretching his arms up, attracting Taekwoon's attention.
"Maybe."
"You're crazy." Wonsik stared at him bewildered.
"I don't think you should be one to call someone else crazy. You just hurt a group of people because it made you happy." Wonsik sat there, searching for some sort of malice in the others words but he found none. It was simply the statement of a naive child who said exactly what he saw.
"It doesn't make me happy to hurt others. Do you think everyone does certain things because it makes them happy? Some people have to do things that they don't want to because they have to." Wonsik explained. "You don't seem to know much."
"That's because I don't." Taekwoon said softly, "I don't know much. Believe it or not, this is the first time I've been out of my house ever since I was a kid. My parents are a little over protective you could say."
"What?!" Wonsiks eyes widened as if the thought of being confined was the worst thing ever, "But you're over twenty now, aren't you? Or at least, that's what I'm guessing. You can move out at your own free will. Fuck what they think."
"What are you talking about?" Taekwoon narrowed his eyes, "They're doing it for a reason. Don't bash them if you don't know their reasons for doing so."
"Do you know the reason, Taekwoon?" Wonsik asked, leaning forward to place his elbows on his knees, head tilted to look at the other. He took the man's silence as a no, scoffing at the ridiculousness. "I wouldn't be able to live like that. I'd kill myself within an hour."
Silence fell over them as Wonsik looked afar, a certain gleam in his eye that caught Taekwoon's attention. He stared at the destruction next to him, taking the time to analyze the man.
His hair was well kept though the signs of fingers threading through those locks numerous times were obvious, not considering the fact that Taekwoon had counted each time the man did it in the time span he's known him. His face was angular with sharp features, his jawline threatening to cut those who dare touch it. His nose wasn't too big but wasn't too small, wasn't too pointy but wasn't too round either; it was pretty, Taekwoon thought. His lips were a pale pink, thin in shape but tempting all the while.
His eyes. His eyes were something else. Taekwoon noticed the way they stared at everything with a certain glint in them. Sharp and tantalizing. They could petrify and melt anyone in an instant; the perfect contradiction that was his very being, Taekwoon determined.
His tattoos complimented his lightly tanned skin, scattered anywhere and everywhere on his arms, another peeking out from the collar of his shirt. They wrapped his arms, binding it in black lines, twisting and turning, coming to life with each movement of muscle.
Then, there was that.
That red thread. The string of fate that tied the two together by their pinkies, gleaming brilliantly against both of their skins.
Taekwoon had almost forgotten about it.
So he was the one. Taekwoon's stare of curiosity quickly died down. But Wonsik was man. Not that it was wrong in any way but was that okay? Is this some mistake? Was a man allowed to love another man?
"Wonsik... can I ask a stupid question?"
"It's not like you haven't already, so go for it." Wonsik smiled, his tone light.
"Can a man love another man?" Taekwoon spit out, looking at Wonsik with curiosity brimming in his eyes.
Wonsik turned his head towards Taekwoon incredulously, "Why?"
"They can't?"
"No, it's not that they can't. People can love whoever they want. It's just... why?" Wonsik asked, "Falling for me already?"
Taekwoon broke out in a fit of laughter, clutching his stomach.
"I'm not sure if I should be offended or happy I made you laugh." Wonsik chuckled, shaking his head as the other wiped tears from his eyes, "It really wasn't that funny."
"To you it might not be, to me it was." Taekwoon sighed, settling down.
The air around them was weightless, a happy feeling coming from both of them.
"Don't you think this is a little weird?" Wonsik asked, turning his head up to look at the sky.
"What is?"
"Just moments ago I had you against the wall, looking scared shitless and now we're talking about whether or not gay love is okay. Weird, isn't it?" Wonsik laughed, looking thoughtful. "Most people would've said goodbye by now and been on their way."
"Hmm... I guess it's a little funny. Not weird, but funny. Fate is like that it seems." Taekwoon responded, smiling a little.
"Fate, huh? Bullshit." Wonsik chuckled, "I don't think fate is anything all that powerful. It's the person that decides what road they'll go down."
"But why does a person waiver? Or change their mind? Or procrastinate? It's because they're trying to fight against fate but in the end, whatever choice they made had already been decided for them. That's what my mother always said." Taekwoon explained, clasping and unclasping his hands that sat in his lap. His fingers reached to tug on the red string out of habit, stopping when he realized how weird it would look to see him tugging on thin air in Wonsik's point of view.
"That was probably the smartest thing that's come out of your mouth so far and it was because you were reciting someone else. If that's the case then fate hasn't been all too kind to me." Wonsik said, his head turning down to stare at his hands.
Taekwoon stared at him, unable to understand the look on the others face. His lips were pouted and his eyebrows furrowed. How was he feeling? Taekwoon was sure Wonsik wasn't feeling happy at the moment and the thought of it made his heart cry.
"Are you sad?" Taekwoon whispered softly, leaning closer to look at Wonsik's face clearly.
"Do I look sad?" The other turned to face him, their faces mere inches apart.
"I don't know." Taekwoon breathed, "I don't think I've ever seen anyone sad or felt it to know but my mother says it's not a good feeling."
"That's... I'm not sad, don't worry." Wonsik said, a hand patting Taekwoon on the back softly.
"What time is it?" Taekwoon asked as he looked around, reality coming back to him. "I have to get home before my parents do!"
"What about your cat or whatever?"
"That's right! I forgot! I need to go find Miko!" Taekwoon sprung up from his seat on the bench, his sense of balance nearly nonexistent as he tumbled forward. "They're going to kill me!"
"Chill, chill. Just tell them the cat jumped out of the window and you weren't sure if you should chase it or not so you stayed in like the good boy you are." Wonsik sighed, turning on the bench to lay down on his back.
"Oh, right. I can say that... but that's lying. Oh my goodness, I don't even know how to get home!" Taekwoon suddenly felt very flustered and naive for chasing the cat around when he didn't even know his way to anywhere.
"Are you serious?" Wonsik suddenly sat up, "How do you not know where you live?"
"Because I'm always there!"
"Is there anything that stands out? Do you think you're far from home?" Wonsik asked, standing up.
"I don't know!"
Wonsik was sure the poor guy would break into tears any second, grabbing him by the shoulders to stop his fidgeting. "I could get around the place with my eyes closed. So just tell me, how did the place look from your window?"
"There was... there was... My father has a black car." Taekwoon mumbled.
"More specific! Anyone could have a black car. Was there a school nearby? Your neighbor a grumpy traditional old man?" Wonsik answered back, exasperated.
"Oh! Oh, I know. The house in front of mine, they have this small fountain where birds come. It's a really light blue and it's visibly chipped." Taekwoons eyes lit up as he felt a proud feeling bloom in his chest.
"A fountain... Chipped? Are you talking about the Baek's? Baek In Ha and Baek In Ho?" Wonsik asked as he thought about the old couple who greeted him regularly when they saw him. He noticed the blank look on the other man's face, realizing that he probably didn't even know their names. "The old lady who always wears leopard print?"
"Oh, yes! How'd you know?" Taekwoon cheered, his feline eyes becoming big and round. Wonsik rolled his eyes at the others childish reaction, started to stroll down the sidewalk, listening intently at the soft padding of feet following him. He smiled.
"I told you, I could get around the area with my eyes closed. Come on, your house shouldn't be that far."
