Nine

Kara looked between them and Annie tried to expel the bubbling excitement in her stomach at being so close to Steven. But she had a feeling Kara could see right through her. Kara turned to Ross and whispered something. Annie caught Steven's eye and he shrugged. She loved it when he did that.

"Would you excuse us. We need to gather everyone for a game that I fully expect the two of you to participate in," Kara didn't look at Annie and Steven as she spoke, gently pushing her new husband away from them.

Steven smiled and raised a brow. "You need him to announce it? Alrighty, then."

Annie watched as the newlyweds ducked their heads close and walked off, whispering, eagerly on Kara's part. Somewhere deep down, a part of Annie raged with jealousy. She wasn't sure if she could handle another week of their sappy love. Or Tay trailing behind her. She must have looked upset because Steven turned to her and reached out, smoothing the worry lines on her forehead with his thumb. Her skin tingled where he had touched her.

"I don't think sacrificing a newlywed couple at dusk would be a wise use of your ritualistic talents. Let's go find Tay and see if he would be willing."

Annie laughed until her cheeks ached. She whipped tears from her eyes as he laughed too, smiling down at her. She looked up at him and just stared. Her hand instinctively reached up and came to rest on his upper arm.

"I'm glad I met you," Annie said quietly as she smiled. "I'm glad you were the one who caught me when I fell."

Steven's smile softened and his eyes changed like was seeing her, like actually looking at her. "Me too." He reached up and stroked her cheek. Annie blushed and looked away, but kept her hand on his arm, not wanting to pull away just yet. But when a loud voice boomed, she jumped and Steven took a step closer to her, their eyes wide and looking around for the source of the noise.

"Alright everyone!" Kara's voice carried well and everyone turned to her. "I know a bunch of you are sick of hearing Ross and I boss you around but please indulge me in joining us in an altered game of spin the bottle."

Annie rolled her eyes and sagged against Steven. He chuckled as he wrapped an arm around her back, smiling as she relaxed against him. She looked up at his sea green eyes and whispered.

"So, do you think we can sneak out now?"

Steven opened his mouth to reply but Kara was at their side in a second. She smiled at the two of them so close and Annie jumped away, tucking hair behind her ear shyly.

"Alright Maid of Honor, how about you choose who goes first."

With a sly look, Annie didn't miss a beat. "Steven, I think you should go first."

Steven narrowed his eyes at her and leaned down to whisper. "What happened to sneaking out?"

Annie scrunched her nose and smiled. "We can do that afterward."

Kara beamed as she dragged the two to a table and placed a bottle on it. Steven stared right at Annie as he took it and gave it a mighty spin. The boys backed away and the girls crowded around. Annie kept his gaze as she stood her ground, willing the bottle to land on her.
