Eight
Steven watched Red run off, her long hair trailing behind her, a smile evident on her face. He reached up and touched the spot she kissed, his mind working a mile a minute. She clearly didn't mind him holding her and she had kissed him on the cheek, so he must be doing something right. Not long after she left, Ross called for his guys to come and get ready.
As Steven got ready for the ring ceremony, he did not think about the dress Red would be wearing. He didn't think about her body pressed against his. He did not think about her red hair and piercing blue eyes. And he especially did not think about how he had almost kissed her.
Steven stood behind the seated guests, one of the bride's maids hanging on his arm. He had already forgotten her name. Megan? Martha? Steven was about to shamelessly ask what it was again when Red rushed over and took her place at the front of the woman's side of the line. Steven was speechless as he watched her take Tay's arm and start walking down the aisle.
She looked so beautiful and uncomfortable at the same time that he just wanted to bound over and take her in his arms and leave to be alone with her. Man, he really needed to know her name. He couldn't, in good conscious, kiss a nameless woman, she deserved to know that she meant more to him than some weekend tryst.
Steven's heart stopped. He really did care about Red. He really did want to spend more time with her and to hopefully have her grow to see him as something more. The pair in front of him was halfway down the aisle and he almost missed his cue to walk with Megan/Martha down to her spot. But Steven didn't take his eyes away from Red.
She had looked stunning in her green palm tree dress when they were at the Temple. But she looked amazing here. The light wind from the sea brushed at her hair, making her look on fire. Her blue eyes shown bright and her makeup was just enough to accentuate her natural beauty. She smiled as she took Kara's bouquet and he couldn't help but imagine her holding it at her own wedding.
Red's eyes caught his and her smile grew. Steven reddened a bit for being caught starting but she didn't seem to mind. She kept glancing his way all during the bishop's speech and Steven itched to hold her again. It took longer than he and most guests had assumed but sure enough, it was over.
Steven tried to find Red again but Tay had beat him to it. He watched as Red tried to tell Tay off but it didn't seem to be working. His heart dropped when he saw her take his hand and walk off with him, almost like she did with him the day they met. They disappeared behind one of the buildings and Steven's shoulders sagged. She was a big girl. She could make her own decisions.
It wasn't until later, after a lot of the guests had left, that he saw her again. She had changed into something less formal but it looked comfortable. Though a lot of the other girls were still a bit dressed up, Red looked ready to go to bed. Ross and Kara had called for all their friends to meet in the main cabin for games and food.
Ross stood with his arms around Kara, his wife beaming as she stood with her newly jeweled hand on his chest.
"Thank you all for coming." Ross turned to look at Kara, smiling wide. "You have no idea how much it meant to us to have you all here to celebrate our union. As thanks, we have paid for the rest of this week to stay here and you are more than welcome to stay or go. Everything is paid for through to the end of the week. Please make yourselves at home and thank you so much."
Kara let out a whoop. "Now who is ready for some clean and wholesome fun, complete with non-alcoholic drinks and board games?!"
Everyone laughed and Steven clapped with the rest of the group as he went to thank his old companion. He knew Ross was loaded, but he supposed getting married puts you in an extremely generous mood. They chatted for a bit but Steven couldn't stop himself from glancing at Red every now and then. She was talking to Kara, smiling and laughing. Ross looked over at them too and nudged his friend.
"Red, huh?"
Steven blinked. "Hmm?"
Ross laughed and nodded to the woman. Steven blushed lightly. "Oh yeah. Uh, I thought it suited her."
"You would suit her too."
"Yeah well, I think my teasing bothers her."
"Not as much as Tay bothers her."
Steven turned to Ross, his eyes wide. "You noticed?"
Ross nodded. "Yeah. I didn't think he would come but when he up and came I was worried the trip was ruined for her. Kara loves her to bits, like a twin sister. But the moment I saw you I had a feeling things would be fine." He grabbed a drink and took a knowing sip. He elbowed his friend in her direction and raised his brows. "She's a freelance writer and loves all things soft."
Steven nodded absentmindedly. Sure enough, the two were on their way over. Red stopped in front of him and smiled.
"Hi," Steven all but whispered, the right side of his mouth curving up into a content half smile.
"Hey," Red replied, her eyes twinkling.
