Chapter 7

Catherine POV

I look up at Eric. I am infuriated by his presence.... By him even existing....

I close my eyes, then open them. I have to concentrate. All of my body heat rushed to my face. If it shows, I know I'm dead already. Eric would call me out, like he does to everyone else in the world. He even embarrassed an Abnegation member and celebrated it! I am so shocked and MORTIFIED. Just MAKE HIM DIE. PLEASE.  I PRAY. I PLEAD. I BEG. And, if we play Candor or Dauntless again, I'm betting Eric'll choose Dauntless. When he does, I'll dare him to....

1. Jump off the chasm.
2. Let me beat him up.
3. Make Four the leader.

Number four's my favorite out of all of them.

4. KILL HIM.

I wish I could.

"SHOOT!" Eric yells as loud as he possibly can.

I pick up my gun and look straight into the target's center. "Come on, Kat. You could do this."

"Today, initiates," Eric mutters, obviously exhausted by all of us, who are clearly humiliating him.

I look at the gun. Inhale. Exhale. Inhale. Exhale. Nathan and Daniel, the kids who are beside me, pull their triggers. I have to blend in. I can't let them know I'm Divergent. I pulled the trigger. I was the only one who hit the target. Four and Uriah clap in the background. Eric gives them a glare.

"SHUT UP!" Eric roars.

Nobody listens.

"JUST SHUT UP!" Eric yells.

"Max always asks me permission, not you," Four quickly retorts.

Eric rolls his eyes. "Shut up, Four."

Four clears his throat. "Who cares what you think?"

Eric pauses, glaring at Four, then Uriah.

"Ooh... You just got burned," Uriah mumbles, trying not to be heard.

Eric's face turns scarlet while he speaks. He inhales. He exhales.

"URIAH!" Eric roars loudly.

Uriah just laughs it off.

"URIAH PEDRAD SHUT UP AND LEAVE! YOU'RE FIRED!" Eric roars.

Nathan steps up. "Wait!"

"What now, initiate," Eric grumbles.

"Technically, you cannot get in trouble for asking a question," Nathan says.

Eric grumbles. "Uriah just has to clean up after you messy people."

I step up and clear my throat. Four just glared at me when I opened my mouth and said, "You're lying."

"What next, Candor!" Eric yells through the Dauntless platforms' invisible walls, I promise people in Amity could hear him.

"You're just afraid to get fired, Coward. I will take Uriah's place," I announce.

Eric turns bright red. "Enough! Well, Uriah will go with you."

"And me," Nathan says.

"Another contestant!" Eric yells, clapping your hands harshly exactly 9 times before his hands turn bright crimson.

Uriah and Four both stand their with their mouths wide open. Nathan and I both glare at each other with a look that says, "Let's do this."

"Back to shooting, initiates!" Eric roars over the clapping of the other advanced initiates.

I make a bull's eye. Again. I smirk in Eric's direction and he glares at me back like a, "Do you think you can talk to me?" I chuckle and get back to shooting. Nathan gets a bulls eye shortly after I do. "Come on, Kat," Nathan mouths playfully.

"Oh you wanna? It's on!" I mouth in reply. I cross my arms at him and glare with a dramatic flare.

Nathan shoots a bull's eye and sticks his tongue out at me. "Oh, really?"

I glare in reply. I turn around and aim my gun to shoot backwards. I shoot. I hit a bulls eye.

"TRAINING OVER!" Eric roars, his voice so loud that people who died could have heard him.

"You could just be stern and strict, not make everyone's ears ring!" Four yells at Eric.

Eric snaps at Four.

"Excuse me, lady?!" Four yells to the world.

Uriah just puts his head into his palms.

"Candor, other and Uriah! Time to clean!" Eric yells.

This is one more step before I will die.
