Chapter 50
"Let me come with you, at least?" Nathan asks as he races behind me, trying to fathom my intense sprinting.
I turn around, looking my boyfriend in the eye. "I think I need to do this alone. Thanks though."
Nathan presses his soft lips against my forehead. "Stay safe, okay?"
"I'll try," I reply while laughing, trying to guess why he's so into PDA today. "Don't tell my brother either, he'll kill me."
"He's right, you really shouldn't be doing this. Especially alone," he admits as he scratches his scalp with his bony left hand.
"I know, but please don't tell him."
"You have my word," he said while laughing, "Want me to walk you to the train?"
"Chivalry is f*cking dead."
He laughs, his eyes dancing in the light. "Whatever you say, Kat."
He waved goodbye just before I sprint to the train. My hair dances in the wind, slowly tugging at my ponytail as a call for help. It screams with urgency as it unites with my conscience— both warning me. They try to prohibit me, but I don't listen. I run up the hill and jump onto the moving train; my hands fusion with the rusty handle. My hair flies out of my ponytail in sync with the bustling wind around me. I slam my body inside the train and think of ways to warn the Abnegation people. I don't want to scare them, but this is necessary. I see the monotone, gray houses just before I bolt out of the train. I immediately rush towards the Priors' house. I knock on the door.
The door swings open, Andrew Prior standing behind the wooden door. "Hello, Catherine," he says, taken aback, "Come in."
I enter the house, seeing a table filled with many guests. Most likely, it's a leadership meeting. I don't know why they decided to meet in the Prior's house; it was usually hosted at Marcus's. A familiar pair of deep brown pits glare into my eyes, struggling to recognize me. He quickly looks away, trying to avoid my gaze.
"Mr. Prior, I need to talk to you privately," I quickly mutter as I lead him to the back room.
Our feet shuffle softly, trying not to interrupt the leadership meeting in the room behind us.
"What is it?" Andrew asks.
"You all have to watch out."
"What? Why?" Andrew asks like its absurd.
I stroke my hair with my hands, trying to calm myself down. I can't scare these people, I have to make it seem as nonchalant as possible. These reminders soared through my head. "Bombs. But please don't panic." My divergence is f*cking screaming right now, I can just sense the Amity.
Andrew nods. "How did you hear about this?"
"I was walking past the leaders' office."
"That makes sense. What about Marcus?"
"What about him?"
"Either you have to tell him or I."
"Why?"
"He's the leader of Abnegation, meaning the leader of the entire city."
"You're right."
"You should tell him."
"Me? It should come from you."
"Why is that?"
I can't deliver the obvious without my manners. I have to be polite, even though the answer is right in front of his face. "You are both officials. Your word is more trusted than mine."
"How?" Andrew asks, puzzled.
I chuckle. "If there's a crisis, who would you believe? A teen initiate or a government official?"
Andrew nods. "You are tight. I will have to tell Natalie."
"Try to keep this private though, just with officials. Because you should all watch out, we can't let the people panic."
Andrew nods. Natalie Prior walks down the stairs, waltzing towards me. "Oh, Catherine, it's good to see you."
"It's good to see you too," I reply with a genuine smile. I've always liked Natalie; she's always been nice to me.
"What are you doing here?" Natalie tries to ask as politely as possible.
"Just stopping by."
She gives me a warm hug. "I'm glad I bumped into you."
"Me too." I reply genuinely, letting go of the embrace.
I walk out of their house and back to the train. I wish I could visit Caleb in Erudite to ask his opinion, but I'm not supposed to know about this. Seeing my father though, it just hurts, more than anything. I'm trying to remain unaffected, but that man hurt me pretty badly. It's just hard to recover from. I ride the long train ride back to Dauntless, and jump down the chute. Back onto the net of initiation day- it hits me like old memories.
I have two days left until initiation. A day off tomorrow and the test the next day. The day after that is initiation. Hopefully, I'll make it in, but I don't know for sure.
