Chapter 49
**
Today's the last day of training. My eyes flutter open, waiting to start the exciting day ahead of me. I hear some loud, heavy footsteps inching toward me.
"Oh Kat! Oh Kat! Where are you?" A familiar voice behind her says, dragging every word to an unnecessary extent.
I laugh, pushing my dark hair back with my hand. My tattoo glistens in the artificial light of the Dauntless dormitory. "How did you get in here? This isn't your dorm."
Abel rolls his eyes dramatically, cracking his head flamboyantly while tapping his combat boots against the floor. "It's not hard. You just walk in." He shoves a donut in his mouth like a chipmunk storing acorns before hibernation season.
"Oh," I say as I sigh with relief.
Abel stares at me with a certain confusion. "You didn't think to ask me that the past thousand times I've come in here?"
"You've come in here before?" I ask sarcastically.
"D*mn, Kat. Your memory is bad. Downright awful," he replies while laughing.
I quickly get dressed as he watches me, like some sparkly vampire, waiting to hunt its prey. I tie my long hair back into a ponytail, adjusting every strand so it looks somewhat presentable, at the very least. I brush my eyebrows with a toothbrush just before I bolt out of the dormitory.
"Hey!" Abel exclaims, "Wait the f*ck up!"
I pause for a second as I wait for my slowpoke friend to catch up to me. As soon as she finally catches up, I start sprinting again.
"Oh h*ll, Kat-"
"It's called being active," I retort, continuing to sprint through the Dauntless compound and to the cafeteria.
I fill up my cup of coffee just before Abel gives me a certain look of disgrace.
"Abel. What's up?" I ask with confusion.
He hands me a giant jug of coffee. "Why have a cup when you can have a jug?"
I roll my eyes, wiping my mouth with my left wrist. "Not all of us are caffeine addicts like you."
Abel laughs as he pushes his curly hair away from his face. "You've got a point there."
I laugh, holding my styrofoam cup in the air. "See? Maybe a cup is better."
Abel knocks the cup out of my hand and drinks it with a single gulp. "That's why. With a cup, it takes a few sips, but countless jugs last forever. Constant energy, am I right?"
I sigh, rolling my eyes at his obscene logic used.
"You can't deny it, coffee is jug-licking good!" Abel exclaims, like a company's slogan I've learned about through the library archives.
I shake my head, my ponytail bouncing in the cafeteria air. "Only to you, Abel. Only to you."
He fills up my jug of coffee and shoves it in my arms. It seems like he's trying to enforce his extremely awful caffeine addiction on the rest of Dauntless; it's mildly amusing. Nathan walks into the cafeteria as he greets me with a kiss.
"What's that for?" I ask jokingly.
"It's a good morning kiss," he replies.
"Why?" I ask.
He laughs, as he pushes his hair back with his hand. He seems more than happy to explain why, as if this is some sort of cheesy romantic act. "My parents often did that to one another when we were kids, and it seemed to make them both happy. Hopefully it makes you happy."
"So it is a cheesy romantic act?" I ask with curiosity.
"I wouldn't deny it," he replied.
Abel clears his throat. "Alright, lovebirds, away from the cheesy sh*t and onto the f*cking facts." He shoves a jar of coffee into Nathan's hands.
Nathan flinches due to its heavy weight. It's a giant jug, bigger than his head.
"Holy sh-" I start, before Abel interrupts me.
"Shot! Let's play some religious basketball!" Abel exclaims as he chugs his coffee.

I finally finish my last and final fear simulation before the ultimate test. My eyes flutter open as I see my older brother, Tobias, fiddling with various liquids on his desk.
"What in the world are you doing?" I ask as I contemplate my brother mixing some strange things like rat poison or Dauntless cake into his drink.
Tobias laughs, his cackling could be heard a mile away. It's incredibly distinctive. "Oh, just a drink to calm you down."
"Calm me down?" I ask aggressively, "I'm already calm enough!"
Tobias walks towards me, pressing his warm hand against my face. "Abel's been giving you way too much coffee, Catherine. You're shaking."
"Does Abel shake?"
"Definitely. I have to give Abel three or four of these a day and he still manages to drink even more coffee," Tobias admits while laughing, "He's... interesting."
Tobias hands me a cup of warm tea. I recognize the flavor from the smell. It's Chamomile tea, one of the most common forms in Abnegation. That and green tea- those are the teas my mother loved.
"Evelyn loved that. Do you remember?" I ask.
Tobias nods while smiling. "Do you call them by their first names too?"
I nod. "I have since the day you left."
Tobias smiles as he takes a sip of my warm tea just before handing it to me again.
"Hey!" I exclaim jokingly.
"That's what siblings are for," my brother jokes, cracking a genuine smile.
I laugh as I drink my nice, warm tea. The shaking slows down immensely for the first time in days. "Thanks, Tobias, you're a miracle worker."
"I try," he responds while laughing.
I exit the simulation room, only to find Nathan, calmer than ever. "You ready for the continuation of the trial tonight?"
"There's more?" I ask in disbelief.
He nods. "This case is wildly popular."
I nod in agreement. "You're right. Everybody wants the inside scoop."
Nathan laughs, his diamond white smile glistening in the artificial light. "Yeah, what nobody tells you is that the Dauntless are a bunch of impulsive drama queens."
I laugh with him, intertwining our hands as we exit the fear simulation center and walk in a mysterious path, only focusing on each other.
"You're absolutely beautiful, you know," my boyfriend says.
I blush as I look up at him. "Thanks, you too."
Nathan showcases his impeccable smirk just before his breathtaking smile shines through. It's beautiful beyond belief. We walk to the edge of the chasm and sit beside it, holding hands. We talk about random topics for what seems like hours.
"Abnegation," I hear faintly, "We have to bomb Abnegation."
I jump, walking away from the chasm.
"Catherine?" Nathan asks with confusion.
"Did you hear that? I have to do something!" I reply with fury.
"Hell, Catherine, come back!" Nathan exclaims, but I ignore his call.
I sprint, faster and faster towards the train. I've got to warn Marcus.
A/N: Hey! I know I haven't done an author's note for the past couple years and the current writing is probably practically unrecognizable to those who just started reading this. Thank you so so so much for the evergrowing views! We passed 10k a few months ago, and it's amazing that the fan fiction I started in sixth grade (I'm a sophomore in high school now) and Divergent as a whole is still attracting readers. Divergent was wildly popular when I started writing this in December 2014. The original HeyFangurl account got deleted in March 2015, along with this book, but I recovered the original prologue.
Also, I apologize for the careless references to currently controversial topics, like Donald Trump in one of the earlier chapters. The whole Donald Trump thing, I wrote about him and his numerous Trump towers, not about him as a politician. Those chapters were written in 2014. Thank you to whoever it was who brought attention to that recently.
Your comments have brought attention to the careless mistakes I've made throughout my prime in writing this (seventh and eighth grade). Thank you for that, I genuinely appreciate it. Also, the whole thing with Kat gradually eating less and less and her food struggles, I'm very sorry for not having a trigger warning at the beginning of the book and whenever those moments come up. This book and I do not, in any means, authorize or promote eating disorders of any sort. I'm working to edit the chapters with trigger warnings and to correct any grammatical/controversial errors.
My writing style's also changed drastically. I just read Rebel for the first time in a couple years, all the way through, and I noticed the changes from sixth/seventh grade to eighth grade to freshman year and most drastically of all, this chapter written in my sophomore year. It's because of the different genres I've been writing- it changed from complete stories to short stories, then to narrative free-verse poetry. Yes, I am slow with updating due to my current passion for poetry and a couple other hobbies, along with school, swimming, and water polo.
It does feel like you are growing up with me as you see the main character mature, not going to lie. Thank you for all the constant support! Love you guys!
I will not publish any new stories until all my current ones are finished, and that includes Rebel. I will try to update Rebel every weekend until this is done, which is hopefully by the end of December/ beginning of January. Talk of a sequel, I haven't decided yet.
Thank you so much for cooperating!
-Chris
