Chapter 29

At Mom's funeral, Tobias and I sat next to each other. Tobias was focused on the altar along with every other Abnegation, except for me and Marcus. Marcus looked at the altar with disdain. I knew he hated Mom. Just despised her. He was laughing silently during the ceremony, and then he walks out. He claims he can't contain himself, but I know he's doing something very different. I'm actually sobbing while I'm sneaking out.

Marcus stands there, smoking weed and laughing to himself.

My thoughts are competing against each other, fissions so built I cannot break, and acquiescence will not return for a very long time. My eyes are glued on Marcus.

Then, Caleb Prior taps my shoulder. "Everything okay?"

"I'm fine," I reply and I walk back to the funeral.

Caleb makes his way to Marcus, while he stuffs the weed in his pocket and produces crocodile tears.

After the funeral, Tobias and I are genuinely crying, while I spot Marcus's crocodile tears.

Assumption 1- Marcus killed Mom on her way out.

Assumption 2- Marcus beat Mom so she would run.

Assumption 3- Marcus hired someone to kill Mom.

Nobody would ever admit it was Marcus Eaton, since he is the leader of Abnegation, so he is the leader of the city. As soon as we got home, Tobias got beat. I cried hearing Tobias's piercing shrieks through his bedroom door. Tobias will murder me if he finds I'm outside his door, crying silently. I run to cover it up. I know I'm next.

I walk into my bedroom, Marcus ripping off my clothes. He beats me with a belt, pushing me to the ground. It happens once, twice, three times. My whole back suddenly turns numb, with the gray carpet of my room slowly turning crimson.

"I'm trying to help you," Marcus says and the world turns black.

......

I dart awake, my eyes fluttering open the minute I hear those chilling words come out of Marcus's mouth. I'm the first person awake, as usual, so I get dressed and run to the chasm. I need to clear my head. When I arrive, the sound of the cold water running soothes me. Everything is perfect, for just one moment. Matt runs towards me.

"Hey Matt," I say.

"Kat, have you seen Nathan?" he asks, panicked.

"Not this morning, no," I mutter.

"That's weird," Matt says, looking back, "He must be at his usual place."

Why didn't he look there first?! That's weird. Four walks with the rest of the initiates to the cafeteria, and I squeeze into the group. I find Jo, Sage, and Abel.

"Hey guys," I ask.

"Has Creepy gone missing again?!" Sage asks.

"Yep."

"Oh god," Sage says.

We eat some eggs. Uriah walks into the room with Nathan and Matt.

"You okay," Nathan asks me.

"Fine. What about you?" I lie.

"Same," Nathan says.

"Where were you?" I ask.

"Not here," Nathan retorts.

"Creepy is back. Creepier edition," Jo says.

She fist-bumps Sage and they both laugh. This is my friend group.

After breakfast, we walk to an oddly claustrophobic white room. I thought everything was supposed to be black, like the training rooms and the dorms. I guess not. This room is incredibly strange. It is a long waiting room, with four subdivisions of even more claustrophobic rooms.

"Isn't this strange?" Nathan asks me, "This is the mystery room I finally got to enter."

"You're a Dauntless born so didn't you see this place before today?" I ask in confusion.

"Nope. All Dauntless kids are forbidden from entering the room. When I tried to sneak in, I got a long lecture from my older brother, than my mom. I tried twenty times before I gave up. This room isn't exciting." Nathan says.

Nathan has a brother? I never knew. What does he look like? My mind is just swirling out of control.

"You will go through Uriah's fears." Four says.

I watch all the initiates go before me, since there are no more beginner and advanced. Nathan is right before me. He walks into the room.

2 minutes later...

"Kat!" Uriah calls and Nathan walks out.

I walk into the room. Uriah injects the serum into my neck, then places the magnets onto my forehead.

I wake up, my body tied to a pole. I see a teenager who looks a lot like Uriah being tied to the train tracks. This is Nathaniel. Nathaniel Pedrad. This is Uriah's brother. Uriah loves him more than anything in the world. The train starts to move. Oh my god. I can't stop him. The boy gets run over.

I wake up. What a deep fear!

I run out of the simulation room. I see Nathan waiting at the door. I walk up to him.

"You didn't have to wait, you know," I mutter,

"I know, I just wanted to," Nathan replies.

We walk out of the fear simulation room.

"You okay?" Nathan asks.

"I don't know what to do," I mutter.

"About what?" he asks.

"Nathaniel. I don't know what to do about the search for Nathaniel," I reply.

"You got that fear too, huh," Nathan says calmly.

I nod.

"This isn't your problem." Nathan says.

"Between my father, my mother, my brother and Nathaniel, my mind is busy," I reply without thinking.

"What happened to them?" he asks as we walk toward the chasm.

"I don't know," I reply honestly, "Other than my mom died."

We walk toward the train.

"You'll know when the time is right," Nathan says.

"Let's hope," I reply.

We arrive at the train. We both jump on as the train races by.

"What happened when I touched your shoulder yesterday?" Nathan asks.

"I got hurt before. In my shoulder." I say," What's your last name?"

"Goode," Nathan replies.

Nathan Goode. I love how it rings in my ears.

I cancel a tear dripping down my face. I place my head in my hands, pushing all hair and makeup away.

"What's wrong? Nathan asks.

"My father was a terrible person, along with being a weed addict," I say, crying, "He killed my mom."

Nathan hugs me. "Hey, it's okay. He'll burn in hell. I'll make sure of it."

I laugh. "Thanks, Nate."

His shoulder is nice and soft for me to lean on, so I lean on his shoulder for comfort. Nathan eventually pulls away and stands up. I walk over towards him, looking outside the car of the train. He turns towards me. Nathan's lips touch mine. I'm shocked. Instead of pulling away, I kiss him back, moving with his lips. I jump into is arms, and he carries me while we kiss.

I love you, Nathan Goode.
