Chapter 18

I proudly stand, accomplishing my victories. This will never be forgotten. I can see Mom smiling in the back of my head and I smile back.

I look at Sage.

"David and Abel are next!" Four roars over all the clapping and cheering.

I run up to Abel. "Good luck."

He nods and gives me a look that thanks me. I smile. He walks up to the fighting rink. He and David are against each other.

I look at Matt.

"Where's Nathan?" he asks.

"I don't know," I reply.

"Since he's my best friend," Matt says, "I thought I would know where he's going. Surprised he didn't tell you."

"It's pretty predictable. Was Nathan always this creepy?"

"Yea. He was worse, once upon a time."

"Seriously?"

"Yes."

I stare at him while he takes a sip of his coffee from the incredibly large bottle Uriah gave him. He gave me one too. I take a sip of my incredibly large bottle of coffee.

"I drank coffee," I say, "I feel unstoppable. I feel like a dinosaur. I am a dinosaur."

Matt slaps me. I slap him back. My eyes drift over to David and Abel. Both of them are scrawny guys with almost no muscle. I honestly don't know who will win. David looks stronger than Abel, but Abel's a few inches taller. Abel attacks David, but David knocks Abel down.

"I can't watch this," I mutter.

"You have to. This is Dauntless."

"Alright, Matt. Alright."

A few minutes later, Abel won. He walks over towards me and cheers. I slap him.

"Hey!" he yells.

"You deserved it," I reply with a devilish look on my face.

"Creep."

"Monster."

"Loser."

"Lemur."

"Wannabe."

Matt runs to us. "Stop this!"

Abel punches him in the face, with me laughing in the background.

"Nathan!" Uriah yells, "Take David to the infirmary!"

That's where Nathan is. He takes bloody David to the infirmary. We all know David won't make into Dauntless. Nathan looks like David is his great friend and it's sad for him. I'm not going to make it either. Nathan likes to make friends with failure. Both his friends, me and David, are both failing miserably. Matt, his best friend, is first on the rankings. Nathan is third or fourth. I'm not at the bottom, I'm just above the red line. Which is top twenty. So I'm fifteenth? I don't know.

I'm going to FAIL. I'm never going to make it into Dauntless. Now, I'm going to be ranked twelfth, because I had the best victory of my life.

"Tom and Adam!" Uriah yells.

Tom and Adam walk up to the fighting rink, both with fists clenched. Their hands are red and they are sweating like dogs. They are so anxious, like I was with my fight, thoughts are running through their heads. Adam looks less anxious then Tom, but I remember seeing Tom's parents yelling at him outside the school.

......

"Thomas!"

"It's Tom!"

"This is not the time!"

I watch this Thomas boy and his parents fight.

"You failure!" his mom yelled.

Thomas keeps his head down, not saying a word. Oh my God. I need to help him. I wish I could. Marcus is in my perennial line of vision, so I can't help him. Thomas cries for help. And I come over towards him after his parents leave.

"Are you okay?" I ask.

"Yea. I think so. You're pretty brave for a stiff," he says.

"In what way?"

"To talk to someone of another faction."

"It's not bad."

"It's not. Thank you. You made me feel a lot better. I guess I better go."

"Yea. Me too. Bye Thomas!"

"Bye!"

When I walk home, Marcus pins me to the wall. "You are such a disappointment, Catherine Eaton."
