Chapter 10
I receive glares from almost everybody around me, making me cringe. Four glares at me the most, then Nathan. Nathan laughs while he's glaring at me and so does Uriah, but that's because none of them could stay serious for more than a few minutes at a time.
They're so similar, it's crazy.... Wait a minute.... Uriah and Nathan. Are they... NO. Oh yuck. That's gross.
"Let's get going," Eric announces sternly, breaking the awkward silence between us.
All of our eyes suddenly land on Eric. The awkward silence keeps going. Eric claps his hands, then clears his throat. "Alright, initiates, let's pick teams. Four, Uriah and Tris against Christina, Zeke and me."
"I'll pick first," Four announces, "Kat."
"Natalia."
"Nathan."
"Jennifer."
"Sage."
"Tom."
"Becky."
"Daniel."
"Jo."
"David."
And I don't pay attention to any more names.
When, we're done, which seems like forever, Nathan briskly walks up to Four, with me following ever-so-cautiously behind him.
"Kat?" Four asks.
"Yes, knucklehead?" I quickly retort, uncrossing my arms from against my chest.
That's how more glares go my way.
"Pay attention, please," Uriah mutters under his breath.
Nathan's shoulder rubs against my shoulder. I squirm and move over. He gets closer and rubs my shoulder again. I squirm and move away. His shoulder suddenly brushes against my shoulder again. I think he's afraid. I stop squirming and decide to just let it happen instead. I glare at Nathan suddenly, receiving glares from Uriah and the knucklehead, but receiving major laughs from Zeke.
Four claps his hands. "Alright, here's how things are done. Everyone choose a weapon then divide into the assigned teams. Both teams hide their flags and you must find the opposing team's flag. Got it?"
We all nod.
"What about the gun?" Helena asks with her snarky voice and her awful demeanor.
Four takes the gun and shoots it at Helena's leg. Helena suddenly falls down to the floor in pain. Everyone else gasps.
Four announces, "It's alright guys, it's just a fake bullet. The person is meant to feel the pain of a real gun, but nothing except your nerves are permanently damaged."
Everyone stares at Four, trying not to get the attention on them. All we can do is hope, hope again, and hope even more.
Uriah yells, "JUMP!"
We all look into the night sky, dark as midnight, and listen to the bird quietly chirping in the background. I overhear all of the initiates yelling and screaming at Four and each other, to jump and get their butt off the train. I run to the back. I rush towards the end of the grain and do a majestic leap. I land on my feet, barely able to keep my balance, because I'm wobbling from anxiety. My mind is slightly hazy as I follow Four and Uriah to where we're supposed to go.
"KAT!" Jo roars, placing her icy cold hand on my shivering shoulder, "READY TO WIN?!"
I cover my ears with my palms. "Please, Jo. Quiet down."
Jo bursts out into laugher. "But, Kat, that's no fun."
I roll my eyes and chuckle slightly. Then, I shake my head slightly, just so Jo can see my disapproval. "Are you kidding me?"
Four clears his throat. "INITIATES!" he roars, "COME OVER HERE!"
All of the initiates on Four's team run to where Four, Tris, and Uriah are standing. Since Uriah's the tallest, he's the easiest one to spot in a crowd. But I can see the knucklehead just as easily. All the instructors are covered with these thick, black, and uninterpretable tattoos. I don't care why they're there, because all they will ever do is regret it. Well... Maybe...
Four gathers all of us in a tight huddle. "Hide the flag somewhere safe... Like in the Ferris wheel. On the top."
We all nod.
Uriah says, "Where do you think their flag is?"
"-back there."
"-over there."
"-Shut UP!"
I escape from all the constant bickering by running to the Ferris wheel and starting to climb. I hear a big, loud, and noticeable creak whenever I moved my tiny hands and feet up the Ferris wheel. It sounded like the train when it stopped working and finally stopped. I climb up higher and higher and higher, higher than my normal self could attain. And, as soon as I look down to see what the initiates are doing, my stomach plummets. I know I'm afraid of heights. It's so weird, it's probably uncommon. Dauntless are fearless, and I'm definitely not fearless. I have more fears than anyone else around me. I'm almost certain I won't make it past the first stage. I'm still looking down, breathing heavily and not being able to catch my breath. I look up again.
"You can do this, Catherine," I hear Mother's voice coo into my ear.
I start climbing slowly, my arms shaking like a maniac while I climb. I hear feels creaking from behind me. I finally get the nerve to look down. I see Tris, briskly climbing behind me.
"Kat?" Tris asks in shock, "What are you doing up here?"
"I could say the same for you," I mutter quietly.
Tris sighs while laughing then climbs up higher to catch up to me while I hyperventilate. "You're afraid of heights."
"Well, duh," I mutter in reply, still hyperventilating my heart out.
Tris puts her hand on my shoulder. "Calm down, initiate, you're freaking me out."
I look back up and slightly climbing up to the top, the freaks driving me more and more crazy as the minutes tick by. I climb up higher, higher and higher.
"Woah," Tris mutters, "slow down."
"TRIS!" I hear Four yell from behind me.
I hear him climb up the Ferris wheel.
"We should go," Four mutters softly, stopping to look down at the ground.
"You're afraid of heights," I whisper, "That's weird."
As soon as we climb a few more steps, I ask, "Why are you stalking me?"
Four places his finger to his lips. We finally climb to the top of the Ferris wheel. I spot their flag on the top of the treehouse. I point it out to Four and Tris.
"Good find, Kat," Four mutters.
"Thanks, knucklehead," I reply.
Four chuckles slightly. We start to climb down the Ferris wheel. Four and Tris are below me. I suddenly take a wrong step and I'm dangling off the Ferris wheel.
"KAT!" Tris roars, "I GOTCHA!"
She and Four turn the Ferris wheel on, causing my body to shift gears. I jump off the Ferris wheel and start doing flips in the air.
......
Four years earlier...
Tobias and I were walking home from school, when we saw an old lady carrying groceries. Tobias runs towards the old lady. I slowly walk behind him. Tobias carries the groceries inside her house, with me quietly following her lead. After we're finished, Tobias asks me, "What happened?"
I say nothing. It's not that I don't like him or anything, or I don't trust him. It's just that I honestly don't know.
I remember us walking into the house, with Marcus spitting in our faces like we were burdens on the world or something.
......
"Hi," She said, "My name is Tori Wu. This is the aptitude test."
She handed me a liquid.
"What is that?" I asked.
"Bottoms up." Tori replied.
I drank the liquid.
I was in a room, surrounded by cheese and knives.
"Choose." A reflection of me said.
"Make all the selfless choices, Catherine." I feel Marcus mumble in my head.
I push that thought away, it's over now.
"Why?" I asked.
"Just choose." The voice said.
"Why?" I asked again.
All the tools disappeared. I saw a dog. How cute! I look at it slowly, my eyes concentrated on it. What if Marcus is here? What if he's right behind me? What if the dog is Marcus? I looked at it like it was mentally retarded. Marcus told me what to do. No, I will not follow his lead. The dig runs towards to attack me. I guard myself. I grunt.
"Ugh!" I yell.
The dog suddenly runs away. I sigh a sudden sigh of relief.
"Be selfless." I hear Marcus say.
No. I will never. I will follow my instinct and rebel. A girl appeared. The dog turned into a puppy.
"Puppy." The girl said.
The puppy changed back into a dog and ran towards her. I run towards the dog, following my instincts. This girl... She's too young to die. I suddenly feel a feeling of adrenaline as I sprint to catch up to the dog.
I was on a old bus.
An old man asked, "Do you know him?"
The old man held out a picture of Tobias.
"Yes." I replied.
"Are you sure?" The old man asked.
"Yes!" I yelled.
Tori Wu yanked me out of the seat and pulled me to the corner.
"Go home and tell your parents that the serum made you sick and you were sent home." Tori mumbles.
"What were my results?" I asked.
"Abnegation," She said as my heart sank, "And Erudite, and Dauntless, and Candor."
"That's impossible." I whispered, "The test tells me where I belong. The test..." I said madly.
"The test doesn't work on you." Tori whispered.
I ran home.
......
"Like a vegetable flying in the sky-"
......
My eyes flutter open, only to see that I'm still doing flips in the air. I'm getting ready to land.
