Chapter Two
When Amaris woke the next morning, she spotted a hole through the band pit. The sun shone through that hole, reflecting on her face. Why was there a random outline, as if someone had been thrown?
Amaris slowly lifted herself, but hissed, feeling pain shoot through her head. Didi stirred from sleeping beside her, almost jumping back at seeing her normally.
"How did you survive that?" Didi gasped as Alisha opened her eyes.
What happened? Everything after seeing her twin had been blank. Did Alexandra run off into the woods or disappear?
"I don't remember," Amaris mumbled as she felt dried blood on the back of her head. Staring down at her hand, she felt her heart race.
"You hit your head with a loud bang," Alisha explained. Everything inside her mind wasn't making sense.
Sitting up, she stared around disoriented. "It could be luck or something?" Didi inquired with a yawn.
"Do you want to go to the hospital?" Alisha asked as Amaris felt her heartbeat in her ears.
Amaris was never brought to the hospital for her wounds. Not because Jack wouldn't let her, but because her birth father worked there. One who looked exactly like her from the one picture she kept under some clothes.
"It's fine," she whispered, holding her head.
Why did she feel the pain was slowly decreasing? Wasn't her impact hard enough that she should have died? Amaris didn't understand any of this situation. What's going on with everything around her?
Wobbly standing, Didi helped her to her feet. Staring back up at that hole through the roof, she stared at the outline. Her mind felt hazy, as if something had left her in a daze.
Alisha pushed open the door with one hand. The sky had been shining blue as the pain in her head had been magically gone. Maybe all the pain is disappearing because she's dying?
They walked down the sidewalk of the street. Amaris noticed the stares from people in their windows out of fear. Aubrey Prices brought that immense fear Amaris felt inside her own body.
All the houses were normal houses you'd see in any subdivision. Each one had grey siding with a low roof with one tree out front.
"It feels weird being alone," Didi remarked as Amaris lowered her eyes. That's how she always felt in general. People couldn't save her from abuse.
"We aren't alone if we have each other," Alisha beamed with a smile. Amaris nodded with a smile, but it faltered quickly. They would probably wouldn't be around for her back.
One day, Alisha and Didi would leave her behind. It's not that she knew what being together felt like. Not for the sake of abuse or overwhelming panic when she'd cry for hours. There was a simple term that you could feel with people, but Amaris did not grow up with it.
"I actually love us searching alone," Didi exclaimed. Amaris did not know what love was.
All her life, she had been an unloved daughter. Was she clinging onto something that she wanted for ages? Amaris didn't know, but she wanted to find out what life was.
"Isn't that Bob?" Didi asked as she pointed at a stoplight. In the area, there were rows of trees. There weren't any cars travelling down the road as they stared.
"I think so," Alisha remarked as she seemed giddy with excitement.
Alisha waved her hand with a wide grin. Bob seemed confused at first, but then rushed over from across the sidewalk. You could run through the roads in Claymore, but you'd rarely get hit. The only way you might get hit is if Aubrey crashes a car into you.
"Hey, what are you guys doing?" he asked, breathless as Alisha wobbly lifted the bag.
"Looking for Aubrey Prices," Alisha said, as Bob's face grew pale.
"Are you crazy?" he freaked as Didi nodded her head.
"Are you at least staying somewhere?" he asked, but they all stared blankly.
"On the street," Amaris mumbled, pushing her curly hair back.
"How about you stay with us instead? The basement has two bedrooms," Bob suggested as Amaris eyed her feet.
"Sure! If your mom allows us," Alisha beamed as they followed Bob down the sidewalk.
Bob Greenwood was also known as Alisha's boyfriend. He had three other siblings named Abby, Liliana, and Tom.
Amaris had never officially met Bob, because he never came to the house. It could be because of the horrible condition, or that Alisha feared bringing him over.
They reached a large brown house. It appeared like any normal house, but toward Amaris it seemed huge.
When Bob opened the large door, his mother had been standing in the entryway. "Alisha?" she asked, her eyebrows knitted together.
"Is it okay if they can stay in the basement?" Bob asked as she looked uneasy.
"I don't think I've met you before," Ann beamed as she extended her hand.
Amaris stumbled back with wide eyes, chewing on her lip. "Amaris," she whispered with a head nod.
"I didn't know people could be scared of handshakes," Ann laughed as Amaris forced a smile. On the spot, she felt like bursting into tears, but not yet.
"Sorry," Amaris whispered, as she eyed the lady. She jumped back because she thought Ann was going to slap her.
This is someone older than her, unlike Alexandra. "Here, I'll help you with your things," Ann remarked.
Ann grabbed the bag, carrying it down the cream-carpeted staircase. There had been a small bathroom on the right with an open white door.
"There's two rooms," Ann pointed at the rooms on the right and left, with a open space between.
"You can pick either. I'll leave you to unpack," Anna said as she left the bag in the middle of them. They stared around the basement space.
"Amaris, you can have that one if you want," Didi pointed to the left room. Amaris slowly nodded, grabbing her clothes from the bag.
Holding the bundle in her arms, she stared around the cream room. There had been a bed in the centre, with a basement window above the bed. In the corner, there had been a brown dresser with a mirror, as she stared at her reflection. Closing the door behind her, she set her clothes in an empty dresser.
Amaris felt exhausted from everything. It's not that she could cry with people all over this house. Throwing herself on the bed, she closed her eyes. Maybe she'd fall asleep to escape whatever comes next. Did that include finding Aubrey or her own twin sister?
Thinking of her sister, she didn't understand why she finally met her. Did she get kidnapped or held hostage? There were endless questions, but she didn't know where she went. It could have been some sort of illusion she created in her mind.
Did they have some big fight? It's not that she remembered anything about her, especially from her family. Maybe her parents couldn't handle having twins? After all, they had them at eighteen. Isn't that a normal age to have children?
Slowly sitting up, she rubbed her eyes. Could something make her life better? Even if she's away from Jack, she's still scared. What if he comes looking for her? Maybe he'll kill her like the five other times?
As Amaris felt her heart hammering in her chest, she closed her eyes. Could something save her?
In the city of Clay, Kai Crossfield sat on his back porch. He stared at the starry sky before glancing down at his cellphone. He heard the glass door slide open behind him, but didn't look back.
Instead, he felt something hit the back of his head. "I didn't even do anything," he spat as he glanced back at his twin brother, Jaxton. He stood with his eyebrows raised, before holding out his phone toward him.
"This is one of them," Jaxton remarked as Kai took his phone to stare at a photograph in an article. The ocean eyed girl had her lips drawn in a tight line, fear visible on her face.
"I'm pretty sure it's Amaris. Inside my mind, I saw something in the middle of the night..." Jaxton trailed.
Kai knitted his eyebrows as Jaxton let out a sigh. "They don't have the same eyes," Jaxton said. Kai knew that identical twins weren't normal anymore, especially ones who appear exactly identical.
"You think something is wrong? Or would it be a different person?" Kai asked as Jaxton shrugged.
"They live in Claymore, where that famous serial killer is," Jaxton spoke.
Aubrey Prices, known as the notorious serial killer of Claymore.
"I think there's something more to her. If people did actual research, Aubrey Prices died when she was twelve," Jaxton whispered, as Kai widened his eyes.
"I think people assume she's some girl from out of town," Jaxton said, as Kai handed Jaxton back his phone.
"I remember seeing that Amaris' sister went missing, but was kept secret," Kai spoke with a sigh.
"You think there's a puppet master?" Jaxton asked as Kai nodded.
"We obviously don't know about the O'Rally twins, but Amaris might know something. However, I think discovering this puppet master is the harder battle," Kai rambled, as Jaxton narrowed his eyes in thought.
"People steal or kill, but Aubrey plays a game," Jaxton started. "All the deaths have been related to Jackson Kenny, plus other citizens of Claymore."
Aubrey's game had been confusing for him to figure out. People enjoyed playing with others, but this puppet master had a mask. What would she use, or even who?
"Are you able to physically see what she's doing?" Kai asked as Jaxton closed his eyes. He lifted his arm, facing his palm directed at the brown fence. He opened his eyes to find himself in a dark room beside Kai.
It wasn't exactly teleportation nor projecting an illusion. He was able to go to a place for a limited time.
The first thing they heard had been crying as Kai tapped his shoulder. Jaxton glanced to see Amaris with he back against the wall, legs to her chest. Her head had been on her knees.
Did someone die? Jaxton thought of a lot of questions, but he didn't know where to start.
When Kai took a step, Amaris automatically looked up with wide eyes. The first thing she did was cover her arms over her head, eyes shut.
"Don't hurt me," she pleaded, tears streaming down her cheeks. Did somebody hurt her? Was it some kind of car accident?
"We're not here to hurt you," Kai started, as Jaxton snapped from his thoughts.
The two of them crouched near her, still giving her space. Amaris had opened her eyes to stare in both terror and panic.
"Are you going to kidnap me? Or kill me?" Amaris whispered, her body trembling. This girl seemed to have no mindset of happiness in her life.
"No, we've come to meet you," Jaxton spoke as she looked at the two of them.
"Wait, you're identical," she murmured as Kai nodded.
"We found out you're like us," Kai stated as Amaris stared blankly.
"Oh, with Alexandra..." she whispered as she hung her head. "We're not close... she's different," Jaxton knitted his eyes brows together.
"I didn't know I had a twin until yesterday. Crazy, right?" Her voice cracked as she glanced up at them.
"You didn't know you had one?" Kai asked as Amaris nodded with her eyes at the floor.
"I think she ran away or something. I don't know," she mumbled. "It had been safer in a way."
Both O'Rally twins didn't grow up together. Does that change whatever they truly are?
"Well, we're Jaxton and Kai Crossfield. We live in Clay," Kai introduced as Amaris looked up with bloodshot eyes.
"Why are you crying?" Jaxton asked as Amaris' eyes grew wide. Did he say something he shouldn't have?
"Nightmares," it seemed a lie.
"Are you lying?" Kai asked as Amaris froze.
It almost seemed like nobody had ever asked her that question. However, tears streamed hard down her cheeks as she trembled.
"Why won't it leave? All that abuse still sits in my mind. I'm such an idiot," Amaris sobbed as Jaxton felt his body freeze.
This had to be child abuse. He had been taught about it in school, but it seemed as clear as day.
"Abuse takes time to heal," Kai said, as Amaris chewed her lips.
"I'm scared," she admitted, her eyes shut. "I'm away, but there are people. Would they do the same thing?" Jaxton glanced at Kai, who wore the same shock. Amaris expected the worst instead of the good.
"Amaris, can I do something?" Jaxton asked as she flinched at his words.
"I'm not going to hurt you or anything," she stared but didn't say anything. Jaxton wondered if she didn't fully trust them yet.
"Just don't hurt me..." she whispered as Jaxton sat on his knees, lightly bringing her into an embrace.
Jaxton could feel her whole body tense. "We'd never hurt you," Jaxton whispered, as Amaris shook in his arms. This wasn't what Jaxton expected when he had this conversation.
"Is this my imagination?" her voice cracked as Jaxton shook his head.
"We're going to help you," Kai spoke as Jaxton felt her grip tighten.
"Why? Everyone who helps, leaves," Amaris murmured. Jaxton didn't realize how much doubt she had about everything.
"So you no longer cry over these flashbacks," Jaxton whispered. Jaxton wasn't exactly sure how extreme her abuse had been.
"Good luck," Amaris whispered. "It won't happen," Amaris said.
This girl in front of them has suffered endless abuse. Something about the way she thinks is different than a normal person.
Amaris had never met her sister, while the other has been an unknown her whole life. It confused Jaxton himself, why she'd randomly show herself now.
Jaxton slowly pulled back from the embrace as Amaris hung her head. "We're going to figure out what we are," Kai said as Amaris shrugged her shoulders.
"We're probably some freaks from a different universe," she mumbled.
"Does your sister have an idea?" Jaxton asked as Amaris shrugged.
"It's not like I know her," she glanced up at the two of them.
Hearing a slam on the window, Jaxton glanced up with wide eyes. The murderous girl stared in with a devious grin as Amaris backed herself to the opposite wall.
"No, no," Amaris repeated as she shook her head. Kai stood, pulling on a latch that allowed the window to open.
Aubrey wormed her way in by throwing herself on the bed, but she ended up falling on the ground. "Hello, Amaris O'Rally," Aubrey greeted with a sly grin.
Aubrey's grin then faltered into confusion when she saw the two of them. "Huh?" Aubrey looked lost, as if she couldn't believe the sight.
"I came to talk to Amaris, but this is quite interesting," Aubrey said. Her grin returned as her gaze fell to Amaris. Jaxton didn't even want to think about what had been going through Aubrey's head.
"You must be the other set," Aubrey said, as Jaxton knitted his eyebrows.
"Set of what?" Kai spat with his arms crossed.
"I guess she should be present as well," Aubrey mumbled to herself.
"Actually, no," Aubrey snarled as Jaxton glanced at Amaris.
She had her knees to her chest, staring in fear. Jaxton and Kai both went over beside the girl as she was panicking. Amaris gripped both of their forearms as Jaxton watched a sight that shouldn't happen. Aubrey punched her stomach as he watched Aubrey standing beside a body on the ground.
Her eyes were shut as Aubrey slammed a foot on her back. The girl groaned as they eyed Alexandra O'Rally, who had icy eyes. Jaxton watched as the girl wobbly tried to lift herself, but it didn't work.
"It's another sibling reunion," Aubrey sneered as Alexandra's eyes met her sister's.
"Is this your game?" Alexandra spat, her voice raspy.
"What game?" Aubrey asked with innocence.
"What you are doing," Alexandra said with a hint of anger in her voice.
"Oh, this?" Aubrey mocked with a smirk. "I'm having fun. Maybe show this sister of yours that you're worse than me."
"That's a lie!" Alexandra spat as Aubrey cocked her head.
"Is it? Why don't you tell her why she doesn't remember you?" Aubrey taunted as Alexandra finally lifted herself to stand.
"How about you tell about the deal we made," Aubrey sneered as she slowly began walking around Alexandra.
What on earth were they? "You're a demon," Kai blurted out as the two eyed him.
Aubrey's devious grin returned as the facade fell. The fair-skinned girl had olive skin with killer eyes that scanned them all over.
"I guess you could say that," Aubrey sneered with a laugh, pushing her dirty blonde hair back.
"This is quite an encounter, don't you agree?" Aubrey taunted, her eyes directed at Alexandra.
"I hate you," Alexandra growled, as Aubrey waved a hand in dismay.
"You aren't even giving your name," Alexandra snarled as Aubrey slammed a hand to the back of her head.
Alexandra fell on her knees like a marionette doll who got her strings cut. Aubrey was the puppet master, and Alexandra was the doll.
"Threaten me all you want but you made the choice," Aubrey taunted as Alexandra groaned.
"What choice?" Amaris mumbled as Aubrey's eyes flashed with delight.
"One choice that altered how the Rare twins should be," Aubrey stated as all three stared confused.
"Rare?" Kai asked as Aubrey nodded her head.
"The luring topic you two are quite intent to learn," Aubrey sneered as she stared at Alexandra on the ground.
"Tell them your real name," Alexandra demanded, Aubrey smirked.
"You can use this anger but you fear me," Aubrey snarled as Alexandra wobbly lifted herself.
Jaxton wondered if people around then could hear this conversation. It's not that he expected it all to end up facing the psychopath herself.
"I'm not," Alexandra barked. "You're just a greedy asshole."
Aubrey wasn't some psychopath who kills people for fun. She knew where to push buttons because she always wanted something.
"Intelligent," Amaris whispered, as she hung her head.
"You're correct, Mari," Aubrey confirmed as Amaris flinched. "See, I get to kill Jackson soon."
"Shut up," Alexandra mumbled as Aubrey raised her eyebrows.
"You're correct on one thing, Kai. I happen to be a demon," Aubrey explained, as Jaxton sucked in a breath.
"I died ten years ago, except there had been a problem," Aubrey started. "Someone decided to seal my powers away," Aubrey eyed Alexandra.
"However, I found out that person through my mind," Aubrey tapped her temple.
"Would you stop," Alexandra growled. Kai stuck out his palm facing Alexandra.
Jaxton watched an illusion of a frying pan hit the back of Alexandra's head. It floated in the air before it disappeared from sight. Alexandra fell flat on her stomach as Aubrey grinned.
"My name is Hope Prices," she started. "Killing Jackson or torturing the town isn't what I really want," Alexandra groaned.
"This girl can give me what I want. However, that's a different topic. I'm sure you're wondering what being Rare means," Hope stated, slyly grinning.
"It means that the twins are identical, along with their personalities. Beautiful looks, supernatural powers with each twin being light or darkness. However, identical personalities didn't happen for the O'Rally twins," Hope's face grew dark.
"We don't have identical personalities," Kai said as Hope studied them for a moment.
"Almost identical," she spat. "Amaris and Alexandra are polar opposites. It's not how Rare twins should be, but somehow it happened."
"It's your fault," Alexandra mumbled as Hope crouched down in front of her.
"I believe it's your fault for that deal," Hope snarled with a laugh."I gave you words, but you agreed that justice doesn't exist. You agreed like the idiot you are."
Jaxton realized that Hope Prices is truly evil. She does whatever she pleases to obtain what she wants.
"I didn't have a choice!" Alexandra barked, Aubrey scornfully laughed.
"You could have stayed with your sister, but you erased her memory of you," Hope started. "Every single memory because you allowed access to me. Was this out of protection or selfish desires?"
Amaris stared in complete terror as he could feel her fingernails digging into his arm. "Why don't we show her some memories? I'm sure she wants to know the truth," Aubrey said.
Jaxton wondered if Hope's game was exploiting something with Alexandra. If Amaris and Alexandra are opposite, it must mean Alexandra is more reactive.
Amaris looks at the floor or keeps her voice quiet, but Alexandra lashes out. Could that be Hope's goal with Amaris? Exploit the emotions that show Alexandra is worse than Hope?
"No," Alexandra spat, but Hope slammed both hands onto Alexandra's temples.
"I said we're looking at sappy memories," Hope repeated.
Alexandra stared over at Amaris in a daze as the room around them had turned completely black. "Mind control," Kai spat as Hope arched her brow.
"I prefer trances," she waved a hand. "Before we begin, I should mention one thing about Rare," she glanced at them.
"You must kill your other sibling at the same time. Any other person who tries to kill you won't succeed," Hope said as she grinned deviously.
The queen of evil has finally revealed herself.
