Chapter Three
Amaris felt immense fear flowing through her system. This wasn't how she imagined an encounter playing out once she left Jack's. Well, she did end up finding Aubrey, except she wasn't really Aubrey.
"That's messed up," Jaxton spat. "Killing our own siblings? How does that even work?"
"Killing each other at the same time," Hope stated, as Amaris felt her heart hammering.
If she wanted to die, her own sister had to kill her? No, impossible because that's not how people are supposed to die. People die from illnesses or a stabbing wound sometimes. Did they plan a death date or something?
"She's not going to make it?" Aubrey's voice asked as Amaris turned her head. On the black wall, projected a video of a crying Aubrey Prices.
"I'm sorry, but she won't," one nurse responded. They stood in a hospital room, where a young Hope slept soundly.
That's right, Hope died when she was younger. Were they the same age as them?
"Aubrey?" Hope's voice rasped as Aubrey climbed onto the metal bars of the hospital bed. "Did Aunt Flora bring you?" Aubrey nodded repeatedly.
"I will stay by your side," Aubrey said.
"You're a good person," Hope whispered before her eyes slowly shut.
The heart monitor began beeping rapidly as Aubrey panicked. From what Amaris could tell, Aubrey didn't look like she was five there.
"I said, don't play my sappy memories. Do I have to get them?" Hope spat as Alexandra slowly shook her head. Her own sister is being mind-controlled by a demon.
"Why..." Alexandra trailed, tears at the edge of her eyes.
"Your dear sister wants to know what happened," Hope said with a devious gaze.
Hope is evil like Jack, but she is going to kill Jack. They both want her to pick sides, but how could she pick sides? Alexandra erased most of her life, as Hope's this mastermind. Amaris didn't know who to choose, but it's all about actions.
"I'll be right back," Amaris heard her mother's voice.
Amaris stood with Alexandra near the entrance of Walmart. Someone had handed Amaris a map, as Alexandra still had ocean eyes. Amaris watched Alexandra freeze as if someone had shot her in the back.
Alexandra stared into the parking lot with a blank expression. "Back together," she whispered, as Amaris glanced at her from the map.
In a split second, Amaris watched Alexandra's eyes change into an icy blue. Amaris felt frozen herself as Alexandra rushed away from the parking lot.
Amaris stared frozen because she didn't know what to say. "Quite an unfortunate choice, but you made a deal," Hope snarled, her eyes directed at Alexandra.
"Then what's your overall goal? It can't just be killing Jackson Kenny," Jaxton asked as Hope grinned.
"I want to come back to life," Hope stated. What? Come back to life? Wasn't that impossible?
"Yes, I unfortunately died, along with my twin sister. Justice doesn't exist in this world," Hope started as she grinned. "What better way to get justice than with a demon? I got to take control of a body killing whoever I please."
"You killed your sister," Alexandra spat with tired eyes.
"My fault for her death? Are you delusional? Aubrey died of suicide, which had been because of her emotions," Hope said.
"Liar," Alexandra growled as Hope raised her eyebrow.
"The stakes have officially changed," Hope started. "Amaris must choose between me or Alexandra. All this points toward a war with Jackson."
Why did she have to make a choice? Amaris felt her mind spinning as she stared at the ground. How could escaping one problem lead to another? Has this been pure karma or because she's Rare?
"We'll give you some measure of peace," Hope snapped her fingers as she disappeared.
Amaris watched Alexandra slowly stand with a devious grin. Aubrey's signature expression has been a smirk or something evil.
"This is insane," Kai said as Amaris slowly nodded.
Where did she even start? How her own sister made a deal with someone dead? That she didn't die five times because she's Rare. Even worse, the way she could die would be by her twin sister.
"What's the smart objective?" Amaris mumbled as she locked her eyes on the wall.
"I don't know how that works. Your sister doesn't have something right, though," Kai remarked.
Amaris knew something wasn't right with Alexandra. It wasn't the problem of what Hope was doing, but her sister acted angry.
"Why does Hope say she's worse?" Amaris whispered as the two boys were perplexed by the issue.
"We don't know Hope's true goals. It's not that we know your sister better than you do," Jaxton said.
Amaris did not know her sister, other than that Hope possessed her when she was young. What age were they then? If it had been when they left, that would have been when they were five years old.
Amaris felt she had been spinning round and round. Is it better to agree with a psychopath or her sister? What choice becomes the right answer? It made tears stream down her cheeks because the choice overwhelmed her.
"Listen, we're going to come to Claymore," Jaxton stated as Amaris snapped from her thoughts.
"It's not that we know where to stay, but we'll come to figure out this mess," Kai said, Amaris slowly nodded her head. So many questions swam in her mind, which she didn't know where to start.
Amaris watched Jaxton and Kai disappear as she stared at her wall. What should she do? It's not that she knows the full extent of Hope's power. All she knew was that her sister was being controlled by this serial killer. Someone who has been killing people since whatever age Hope is.
It felt like she had been falling deep into a hole. Actions always speak louder than words, but in this situation, it differs. Hope had done actions that were juste but evil. Would this girl end up killing her sister or even the people in this house?
Amaris felt her body lie down on the floor. Closing her eyes, she felt tears stream down her cheeks. Her mind feared what had been coming. Not from Hope's twisted game or killing Jackson, but who she is. It wasn't that she had been some normal girl, but different.
"They left?" Jack barked as Molly Jefferson stared at the man.
"Yes," she said, her arms crossed.
Molly had been the mother of Amaris and Alexandra, who could never find her lost daughter. Not just that, but save Amaris from her endless abuse.
"Did you plan this?" he asked as Molly watched Jack's anger.
"You saw the letter from Alisha. It's their choice," Molly said.
The brown-haired man ran a hand over his face. They both stood in the living room with orange walls, a small television, and red couch.
Molly saw the letter from Alisha stating they were finding Aubrey. It had been crazy, but it got Amaris away from this. Amaris didn't deserve her abuse, but Molly could never intervene, unless Jack wasn't home.
What had been the reason? Jack had threatened to kill Amaris if she stepped foot to protect her. It always filled Molly with anger and sadness when she'd wrap Amaris' wounds. Why did he forcefully make her cheat on Micheal?
They kept in contact for a conversation at least once a month. All about updates about Amaris' condition or even if they had found Alexandra. Molly never found out why she ran away that day when she saw Amaris crying on the ground.
"It will end them dead," Jack spat, crossing his arms.
Aubrey might end up killing them, but Jack had been Aubrey's target. Finding ways to exploit him in simple ways, such as drugs that he had taken before.
"Aubrey will still end up targeting you," Molly said.
"She's going to kill me," he grated. Molly didn't feel any sympathy if he was going to die.
Molly didn't even love him, but she wanted to escape, even if she couldn't.
Jack had been more than that hero Claymore citizens see. His daughters, Alisha and Didi, aren't even from the same mother. They had been with Jack but left because of the man himself. This meant Jack needed someone to care for him while he dealt with Aubrey's taunts.
The young serial killer who killed Jack's brother that day they left the house. Overall, Molly had been shocked by the information, because death had been rare. Later, all of it became an effect that changed Claymore.
Molly walked away from Jack, going into the kitchen. It had been one of her rare days off, while Jack had been going into work late. When she spotted Jack leave the house at the corner of her eye, her phone rang.
Sliding it over, she answered the phone. "Amaris found her," Micheal said, as Molly almost dropped her phone.
"How do you know?" Molly rushed as she felt overwhelming relief inside her system.
"Someone sent me a picture. Unknown number that isn't even traceable," Micheal started."They still look exactly alike, as they always have. However, Alexandra's eyes are different..."
Molly didn't know how Alexandra could have different eyes.
"The colour is like an icy blue. It's similar to Aubrey's eye colour," Micheal said. Molly walked over to a hardwood chair, sitting down at the table.
Did Alexandra wear coloured contacts for fun? Maybe she ended up getting involved with bad people.
"In it, Alexandra is holding her hand out to Amaris. I believe it's on the church balcony," Molly knitted her eyebrows.
Why on earth would Amaris be at the church? There weren't any funerals at night, since all those in Claymore normally attended funerals.
"It's been ten years," Molly breathed, staring at the wooden cabinets.
"Has it really been that long..." Micheal trailed as Molly ran a hand over her face. However, she knew this wasn't going to be some family reunion.
"We failed as parents," Molly mumbled as she felt her own eyes water.
"Yeah," Micheal whispered as she covered a hand over her eyes. All before it had been happy, but then Jack had made her physically cheat.
Children are supposed to grow up happy and trusting people freely. Amaris and Alexandra did not end up being those type of children. They had been happy before it all ended like dust as perfect strangers to each other.
"We should have known this would happen since the start. It's not like they were born normal but being identical," Molly started. "We changed their last name for that reason alone."
"That report you sent in about her broken bones... they are all healed," Micheal said. "It's all magically put in place. Do you think it's more than just being identical? Aubrey Prices has her telekinesis, but do you think they have something similar?"
Molly never considered that input. She has seen her fair share of videos of what Aubrey Prices has done to people. On the news, they broadcasted a man being thrown by an unseen force into a building. It had been hard enough to kill a person, which left her in shock.
"It could be possible. I'll try to figure it out," Micheal said as he hung up the phone. Molly placed her cellphone on the table, her eyes directed at the it.
Would her daughters who left find some measure of peace with each other? Molly didn't know, but she hoped nothing drastic happened.
Amaris stared down at the polished dining table with a plate of pancakes in front of her. She hadn't even touched them but stared at the food she never remembered having. Is this food that rich people eat?
"Are you going to eat?" Tom Greenwood asked as she flickered her gaze up at the boy.
Everything from yesterday made her want to sink deep inside a hole. Finding out she hasn't died is one thing, but knowing her twin sister is possessed? That's a new sort of revelation she never expected.
"Was getting there," she whispered as she slowly cut the pancakes into small pieces.
How could she choose between Alexandra or Aubrey? It's not that you could classify it as an easy choice in life. Nothing in her own life has been easy, but she's gone through pain.
Where the Crossfield twins going to come back? Jaxton had hugged her and it scared her out of her mind. Amaris feared he would hit her like Jack always did. He could have thrown her by the arm into the wall, but he didn't. Is it true that there are good people in this world?
Amaris slowly chewed her pancakes, her eyes switching to Didi, sitting beside her. "Did you hear anything last night?" she mumbled.
"Nothing at all, why?" Amaris widened her eyes at Didi's response.
How didn't they hear the window opening or the constant bickering? Were the walls soundproof or something? Amaris didn't know, but it made her mind spin round and round. Would she meet them again or someone new? All of it became unknown and left her feeling blank.
Slowly chewing her pancake, there had been a knock at the door. Ann went to answer it, as Amaris couldn't see who had been there.
"Can I help you?" Ann asked, Amaris looked back through the railing to see a boy.
"Is Amaris available?" he asked, Ann nodded with a smile.
Amaris slowly stood up, chewing one last bite of the pancake. Stepping down the hardwood stairs, she came face to a blonde boy. Amaris found him cute, which made her chew on her lip.
Amaris stepped out, closing the door behind her. He smiled as Amaris felt her heart race with both fear and confusion. Is she willingly supposed to trust people that show up at the door looking for her.
"I'm Josh Waters," he introduced. Amaris wondered how he knew of her location, but she feared asking. "I'm not here to hurt you or anything. I'm one of Aubrey's friends."
Amaris felt her fingers twitch, because it didn't seem like Aubrey could even have friends. Isn't Aubrey a psychopath? Maybe she's actually a sociopath?
"Really..." she trailed off.
"I know it seems quite strange, but she needs us," Josh said.
Need for what? To actually feel some type of emotion? She's a mastermind because her mind is twisted.
"Want to take a walk?" he asked, which made Amaris jump. Did she have a say in this walk? Maybe, but Amaris felt she didn't.
"Okay," she murmured.
The two walked a fair distance away from each other. "I'm sure you're quite confused with the choice you have to make. Aubrey is a very intelligent person, which she'll know-" he stopped.
He looked around as if he had been unaware of his surroundings. Josh held his head for a moment, before letting out a sigh.
"I didn't say anything bad?" he asked.
"Bad?" she questioned, as Josh nodded his head. Amaris didn't understand what had been happening. One moment he had been rambling about the situation, and now he is disoriented.
"You just mentioned your Aubrey's friend and about the choice situation..." she trailed, as Josh sat down on the sidewalk. Josh let out a long sigh before looking back up at her. Amaris felt lost in this whole situation.
"You know how your sister is mind-controlled? Like how she can sometimes access her body instead of Aubrey?" Josh asked.
Amaris did not know that. Her sister can take control of her body like normal? Why hasn't she been doing that all along?
"It's not limited to Alexandra," Josh said, narrowing his eyes. "There are three of us that work for her. It's rare that we're aware of what we're doing, but it's basically Hope's possession is growing weaker."
Amaris sat on the ground since she felt her legs were going to collapse from fear. There were questions running through her head with answers she didn't have.
"I don't know if it's age or awareness. The worst part of this possession isn't that problem..." he trailed, setting his sight down on the sidewalk.
When Amaris looked over, she spotted Aubrey skipping down the sidewalk. She wore an innocent smile as she stopped in front of them, beaming a smile.
"Hi, Amaris! It's so cool to meet you!" Aubrey beamed, as she waved a hand, still wearing a bright smile.
"It isn't just Hope and Alexandra fighting back and forth. This is the real Aubrey," Josh said, as Aubrey started to jump around.
She still had her icy eyes, but her personality seemed more innocent of the true Aubrey Prices that Claymore knew.
"Hope and Alexandra are always fighting. Hope always gains control because she loves it. She's going to kill Jackson too, which is great! Soon I'm going to be a person again! Isn't that so cool?" Aubrey beamed,!Amaris felt her fingernails digging into her skin.
This happy girl in front of them is the real Aubrey Prices. Not the serial killer who loves power, but the girl before she killed herself.
"I wanted to see how alike you two look, which is crazy!" she exclaimed, bouncing around on her feet.
Suddenly, Aubrey stopped bouncing on her feet. That happiness she had turned into a devious smile, eyebrows narrowed.
"My sister is quite a nice individual, isn't she?"
Amaris knew it had to be Hope. Their personalities were just as switched as hers and Alexandra's.
"She seemed anxious to meet you, which is why I couldn't let the opportunity slip. I have to go, since Jackson talked to some people," Aubrey disappeared. Amaris felt frozen in place, staring at the empty street near Josh.
Three people in one? Does that mean Aubrey is actually a demon herself? Amaris didn't know where to start, since she felt her body shaking in fear. Why has it always been so fearful of everything that's been occurring?
"Hope sees those in Claymore as pawns. Just like in a chess game, every piece she kills leads to her victory," Josh said.
How does wanting her on Hope's side lead to anything? It's not that she has any cool powers or natural intelligence to win over people.
"Does she actually care for anyone besides herself?" Amaris mumbled, looking at Josh.
"Aubrey," he implied. "Aubrey and Hope are polar opposites, like you and Alexandra. We know Hope's personality as a power-hungry, cunning, serial killer. I don't know why Alexandra won't bring Hope and Aubrey back to life."
Amaris felt like her whole mind was spinning. What is the correct choice? The sister who erased her existence, or a serial killer? Was it reassuring that Hope didn't kill Didi or Alisha?
"You may not trust me, but you haven't seen the true Alexandra," Amaris stared at Josh. He didn't seem like a bad person, but she still didn't know if she could trust him.
"I can't normally talk this way since we aren't friends of Hope's; we're slaves," Josh explained. "We exploit Jackson in different ways, such as those articles about his drug addiction."
"Why don't you stop doing it?" she whispered, as he shrugged.
"It's not that we have control over our actions," Josh spoke.
Amaris felt her eyes glossy from his words. He can't do anything to stop what he is doing, even if he wants to. She felt a finger wipe away her tears, making her jump back in fear. Josh stared in confusion, before weakly smiling.
"You don't need to cry over me, Amaris. Just focus on picking a side," Josh said.
Why did she have to pick sides? Someone who doesn't know any other emotions besides pain and sadness.
"What's the difference? Is it for the fight?" Amaris mumbled, as Josh nodded his head.
"The war against Jackson," he said. "Hope seems to know more, but it's up to you if you want to help your sister."
Josh looked mindless again. It almost appeared that he was looking in a daze without knowledge of anything else.
"You could call her Aubrey, because she isn't exactly Hope. Don't underestimate Aubrey, because she'll be willing to share information about your sister," Josh said. He stared at her, but he seemed to be looking past her as if someone had been waiting.
Amaris looked back, but nobody had been waiting. Josh had said there was more involved with whatever Aubrey had planned. Amaris didn't know what that devious girl had in mind, but she knew it meant war.
"I'll be going," Josh remarked, waving a hand. He walked down the sidewalk, leaving Amaris to stand alone. She dropped onto her knees, feeling her eyes water.
For what reason was she crying now? Is it because she feels bad for Josh? Isn't he basically someone on the path of evil as well? Amaris didn't know who the other two were, but they may have been worse than Josh.
It wasn't that Josh was bad, unlike Hope. Why did it have to be a villain, that they'd call it in the movies. Jack's one as well, but she isn't sure what her sister's is. After all, she doubted there would be a point where they'd become true sisters.
Do you think Amaris and Alexandra could make amends?
