Chapter 13

After hours of waiting, dawn finally broke. Rubbing her eyes with her palm, Hayden pulled her back away from the hard stiff mattress in which she spent the rest of the night. She groaned in pain, her back as stiff as the mattress she was asleep in.
The metal door creaked open as Isla entered the room, holding a plate of toasted bread. She noticed the weary look on Hayden's face and thought to ask her about it.
"Is there a problem?" Isla asked, sliding the ceramic plate to her side.
"Back-ache," Hayden replied bluntly.
"I should have realized that you were used to only the softest mattresses Europe can provide." Isla said.
"That's not true! I had seen this magnificent bed once but it was way out of my league." Hayden said, trying to throw sarcasm at Isla.
"Sarcasm never was your thing, was it?" Isla asked. She wasn't a fan of small-talk but sacrifices had to be made.
"You said you could help me. How do you plan on doing it?" Hayden asked, stirring the conversation to the path she wanted.
"I mean no offense when I say this, but you don't intellect all that much. And that's where I come in!"She replied with a cheeky, yet forced smile on her face.
"I'm listening."
"I was in the headquarters long enough to know that Cameron didn't make it." Isla said. Hayden's face fell as she covered her mouth like a reflex. Her heart seemed heavy all of a sudden, struggling to maintain the regular flow of blood.
She was filled with guilt.
"He didn't make it." Hayden mumbled to herself softly, the cracking of her voice outlining the pain that had taken over her.
"I thought this would make you happy." Isla stated truthfully.
"He's still my blood." she said, correcting herself almost immediately, "was."
"Hayden now's not the time to mourn his death. If you want to be on top, you have to focus." Isla replied, wanting to do anything but pity Cameron's death.
"You are here to help me, not tell me what to do." Hayden said.
"Fine," Isla said, walking towards the door "you better not waste those slices of bread."
Hayden shut the door with her back, relying on it to keep her upright. The only family she had contact with was gone. Her heart was brimming with guilt, for she knew that ultimately both their deaths were her fault- directly or indirectly.
She wasn't able to hide behind the excuse that she didn't mean to. More so, she didn't want to hide behind it. Her heart was telling her to own up to her crimes it wasn't a shared view.
Mixed emotions never lead to fruitful results. Her mind was torn between doing the right thing for herself or the sake of the path. In her heart, she wanted to do what suited her but that never turned out the way she wanted.
She balled her fists in anger, gritting her teeth along with it. The only person she blamed was herself.
Why does nothing go my way? She questioned, stomping on the vanity table on her side, shattering the potted plants that once sat there. Fighting Cameron, be it verbal or physical was her emotional outlet. It was the only thing that kept her from causing problems elsewhere.
I will never be able to do that anymore, she reminded herself, involuntarily releasing her fists from the ball it was trapped in.
She slouched her back on the door, causing it to rattle against the floor. Her heavy breathing was audible to everyone but herself. She dragged her back to the ground with her head leaning on the door. She couldn't keep it in anymore. She could sense a liquid substance rolling down her cheek but she didn't stop it.
She let her tears fall as she hugged her knees to her chest.

What have I become? Isla asked herself. She told herself that she was willing to take any measures and even so, this seemed way out of line.
"I didn't think you'd stoop this low." Valerie said, leaning on the wall for extra support.
"How did you get here?" Isla asked.
"I sent my legs to follow you and here I am." she said with a smirk on her face.
"That's a creep move." Isla said.
"Trying to change the conversation? You can interrogate me once I'm done with you." Valerie said.
"What do you want?" Isla asked.
"Manipulating her to get what you want? That's a little cheap." Valerie said.
"It requires skill and hard work though." Isla said, defending herself
"I can't deny that. I just thought you had better tricks up your sleeve." Valerie said, now walking towards her.
"I do have better tricks up my sleeve, they're just riskier. I'm not willing to risk anything for something as worthless as my pride." Isla said.
"Just when I was beginning to think we were similar." Valerie said with a pout on her face.
"Alright, cut the crap. What do you want?" Isla asked.
"Ignoring the fact that you don't have a lot of morals, you're useful. And so am I!" Valerie exclaimed.
"So what's you're point?" Isla asked.
"You want the pack, and I'm on neither of your sides but that can change." Valerie said, causing Isla's eyes to glow.
"While I am certain that you won't get my masterpiece, I am willing to cut you a deal." she said. Isla couldn't contain her excitement. Sure, she had Hayden's unintentional help but Valerie was the only person she wanted.
"Well, what are you waiting for?" Isla asked, not wanting to waste another second.
"How do I know I can trust you? You don't exactly have the best reputation." Valerie said, eager to know her answer.
"I could ask the same." Isla said.
"And why is that?" Valerie asked.
"I figured you cared about her." Isla said.
"Did you know that vaccines for viruses are first tested on rodents?" Valerie asked.
"What's wrong with you?" Isla asked, not knowing where the conversation was going.
"Do you think they ever cried when the guinea pig died because of their tests?" Valerie asked.
"Obviously not?" Isla asked, still confused.
"Then it shouldn't be a problem, should it?" Valerie asked as Isla finally understood what she was trying to convey.
"Am I also just a guinea pig?" Isla asked.
"No, you're just a means to an end." Valerie replied.
"What is it that I can do but you can't?" Isla asked, intrigued. If she was her means to an end, she obviously couldn't do it on her own.
"I can do it, just not alone." Valerie said.
"What is it?" Isla asked.
"I need you and your pack to get rid of a coven of witches for me." Valerie said.
"Which one?" Isla asked, her eyes burning with determination.
"The Houston's."
