Chapter 12

A proud smirk played on Valerie's lips, chuckling as she wondered what Isla was going to offer next. Isla was a fool to believe that Valerie would give her the concoction that supposedly made Hayden immortal.

Hayden was the best candidate she could have asked for. Having a guinea pig test her experiment came with many drawbacks, mainly the fact that there would be another person along with Valerie who had access to this massive power.

Hayden had asked for time to think about it but approached Valerie almost immediately. That's when she knew that this was an opportunity she couldn't miss.

If Hayden was so easily persuaded, making her think she wasn't in control would be a piece of cake.

I should go pay Isla a visit, she thought, curious as to what she must be doing right now. She picked up her sleek black phone from the bench she was seated in, walking away from it as she tried to distract herself from her problems.

It seemed that nothing was more distracting than watching someone try her best to please her.

The only place she could assume that Isla was was the Montgomery pack headquarters. She made her way towards the pack-house but came to an immediate halt when she heard voices. Voices of two females that sounded very much like Isla and Hayden.

How convenient, Valerie thought, walking towards them to eavesdrop on their conversation.

"I can help you become the alpha." Isla pleaded with Hayden, a hint of annoyance hidden in her tone.

"Why would you want to do that?" Hayden asked, skeptical about the whole situation.

"Because you deserve it, more than anyone else in the pack." Isla said, trying to sound as sincere as she possibly could.

"How do I know that I can trust you?" Hayden asked, cocking her eyebrows.

"I wouldn't have laid still and let you use me as a distraction if I wasn't serious!" she exclaimed, touching her neck to direct Hayden's gaze towards it.

"What do you get out of this?" Hayden questioned, still unsure. She knew Isla her whole life and was indifferent about her. To her, she wasn't unlikeable, but she wasn't likable either. Her presence could be compared to a passer-by, who was always calm and composed

Hayden might have tried to befriend her if she was fazed by anything.

She was a sly fox, waiting for the right moment to pounce.

"All I want is a reliable alpha and I know you can be one." she said.

"Are you sure that's what you want?" Valerie asked, snickering at Isla's attempt of staying calm.

She did say that she doesn't expose previous deals though, Isla reminded herself, looking at Valerie with a straight face.

"Valerie?" Hayden said, befuddled.

"I heard your desperate call for help and decided to see what's wrong." Valerie said, trying to accomplish what she wanted discreetly.

"Thanks, but I'm capable to do it on my own." Hayden said, her ego kicking in

"You clearly needed my help." Isla said.

"And you clearly want something from me so I'd suggest you be quiet." Hayden said, irritated that she exposed her to Valerie.

"I'm not going to offer again so just admit that you need me." Valerie said. She hated the way she sounded, she knew that she came across as petty.

It's still better than asking for help, she thought, waiting for Hayden to crawl towards her.

"No," Hayden said simply, turning to face Isla "I could use you though."

You know Valerie is much more of a practical choice, right? the voice asked, hoping to influence her answer.

I need to show her that I don't need her anymore, Hayden replied, turning again to face Valerie this time.

"I need to have a word with Isla." Valerie said, not breaking her gaze at Hayden. Valerie motioned her hand towards a bus stand and walked in that direction with Isla right at her heel.

"Did you decide what you want?" Isla asked, her heart thumping with hope.

"You seem to have backup plans." Valerie said, ignoring her question.

"Yes, but that's all she is, backup. I cannot rely on a person!" Isla exclaimed.

"Listen. In case you hadn't figured it out yet, I was never going to help you." Valerie said, waiting for the reaction she expected from Isla.

"And why is that?" Isla asked, the hope in her heart melting into anger. She managed to remain indifferent as always.

"Hayden can't rely on herself. She's impulsive, rages quickly, and therefore, can't rely on herself." she said.

"And I'm not." Isla finished, finally accepting the fact that Valerie was never going to help her.

"Making her stronger than she was would be no different because, in the end, she will succumb to her anger." Valerie said.

'*•.¸♡ ♡¸.•*'

Hayden bit her lips in anger. The anger she directed towards herself. She knew she needed help and that angered her.

I can't ask for help, she thought, glancing at Valerie.

She wanted to listen in on their conversation, but she stopped herself for she respected others' privacy.

Look at you, you're controlling your actions, the voice said, amused.

Maybe I should ask Valerie how to get rid of you, Hayden said, realizing that Valerie didn't know about this and that she probably should.

If you really want to get rid of expert advice then by all means, go ahead.

She looked at them again, but this time her focus was on Isla. Hayden knew that she was resourceful and right now, she was at a loss. The pack's hatred towards her multiplied as she supposedly killed her own brother.

She would never eliminate her own family, at least not intentionally but she was the only one who knew that.

She saw Isla trudging towards her, making her straighten her back to gain a confident posture.

"Just trust me on this. I won't let you down." Isla said, sincerity in her eyes. That was the first time Hayden witnessed any emotion which was conveyed through her eyes.

"I'll give you a chance." Hayden said, any doubts she had on Isla slowly subsiding.

"You won't regret it." Isla said, biting her lip to stop the smirk forming on her lips. She had done it. Sure, it was the harder route but it was better than nothing. The last, but the most reliable plan on her book proved itself, yet again.

The eye doesn't necessarily tell the truth.
