Chapter 8: Plan
Colt still had Mathew pinned on the ground. I was usually the last to trust, but I could read Mathew easily. He was an open book.
"Colt, get off him," I ordered.
"But Vi-" Colt tried to argue.
"Trust me, can you?" I asked gently.
We had a long stare down, finally Colt go up.
"Thanks," mumbled Matt, sitting up cautiously before rolling back his shoulders.
Rhea bent down to help him up. I still didn't like her involvement with him. That was something I needed to intervene with.
"I still don't like this," said Colt from my side looking at the two.
Once Mathew was standing, I grabbed him by the collar and pulled him close enough that we were eye to eye.
"If this is all an act and you do end up hurting us, I swear to you I will spend the rest of my life hunting you down and make you wish you died in this miserable place," I threatened meaning every word.
I saw all evidence of colour vanish from Matt's face. I had scared him. Good.
"I promise you I will never hurt Rhea," he said, something in his expression changing. He liked her. Like liked her. I wasn't very surprised. If anyone were to fall for their capture in a short time, it would be with Rhea. She was one of those people you couldn't help but love. She was pure, something so rare in the world.
Rhea cleared her throat. I pulled my hands away from Mathew before going to stand next to Colt again.
"So I was thinking, we can sneak into the CBG news building and project this across all news stations because if we just hand it in they could just sell it right back to him," said Rhea.
"That's too risky, security is too high there," said Matt.
We all turned to look at him.
"How would you know?" asked Colt.
"I did my internship there last year, I can get you a key so you don't trigger alarms, I also have the whole layout memorized. I have a friend who works in security, I'm sure he can get us the work schedules," he said taking us by surprise.
So he might be useful after all.
"In order to broadcast it, you need to get to the top floor, but there's only one key that can access that room. According to the key owner's social media account, he's in Europe with his now fiancée. The only other way in is if you break through the roof and climb down to the room's window," he said.
"The harder the task, the funner it is. Who's up for a challenge?" I grinned at my group. From the excited look they gave me, I knew it was going to be a success.
We spend the next three days planning our next moves down to the T and back up plans in case we fail. I knew from experience, plans were just a road, no one ever knows what bumps and surprises you'll meet on the way. You can never be too prepared, but being all on the same page was a good start.
When the day came, we were all dressed like we belonged there. Pant suits and ties, blouses and skirts, all that corporate attire. It was a big building, it was easier to blend in. The more employees, the harder it was to familiarize yourself with all the faces. We had keys cards around our necks or pinned to our pockets. Coffee in hand, smiling at coworkers acting like we belonged there. When we got to the elevator and I swore. It only went up 25 floors, there were another five floors that were above them. We needed to get to the thirtieth floor.
"I swear I never knew," said Matt, his face pale with worry.
Rhea squeezed his arm in reassurance, giving him a comforting smile. "We're not blaming you."
They'd gotten closer these last couple days. It was sort of gross to watch them give each other googly eyes, but I could not cage her in. It was her life, she chose how to live it, I shouldn't control her. I just wanted her to be happy, and if Mathew made her happy then so be it.
"Plan B, stairs," said Colt.
I let out a loud groan. I hated stairs
We rode the elevator to the twenty-fifth floor before heading to the stairway. I tried opening the door, but it wouldn't budge. "It's locked."
"It's an older door, I can break it," said Colt, readying himself.
Rhea grabbed his arm, keeping him in his place. A look of worry on her face. "Wait, what if there's an alarm?"
That could be a nuisance, but...
"We have a head start before guards get here," I said. "Do it."
Colt nodded and slammed his body against the door.
Once...
Twice...
Come on... Open!
Thrice...
The door finally gave away, breaking open.
Here we go.
