Chapter 7: Release
I woke up tangled in the sheet with Colt. I couldn't help but smile at last nights events. It was all real, I didn't dream it. He finally stirred awake, looking down at me with a lazy smile.
"Morning."
"Morning," I smiled back.
Colt kissed the top of my head. "Somehow this still feels like a dream."
I knew exactly what he meant. "I was wondering... why did it take you so long?"
Colt raised a brow. "To kiss you or tell you I love you?"
My lips tipped up. "Both."
He trailed finger down my neck and along my shoulder. "I was afraid I'd lose you as a sister too. You're all I have."
I shook my head. "Idiot. You could never lose me,"
He smiled. "I know that now."
He leaned down and kissed me passionately.
"Mmm, let's just stay in bed all day," I said as his lips left mine.
"As much as I'd love that, we still need to finish this mess," he said kissing the top of my nose before hopping out of bed.
Then it struck me, "How do we tell Rhea?"
Colt paused, one foot through his pants. He shook his head. "I'm sure she'll be happy, but I guess when this mess is over we'll tell her."
I nodded, bitting my lip nervously at the thought.
I looked at my red dress on the floor, I was not going to wear it. Instead, I borrowed one of Colt's larger shirts before slipping it on. It smelled like him. Something between the city and spices.
He leaned back looking at me with a smile.
"What?"
"Nothing, I just really like this look on you," he replied with a smirk.
I rolled my eyes before giving him a kiss on the cheek. "I need to check on Matt, see if Rhea's been feeding him."
I walked into my room and changed before Rhea suspected anything. As I walked to the kitchen a delicious aroma filled the air. God I was starving. I walked in and saw Rhea cooking, and Matt was... helping? Without any restrictions! Where we're the hand ties?!
They were also... flirting? What?!
"Oh Vi! Your up!" she chirped, noticing me gawking at them.
I tried closed my jaw so I could muster words, but I was failing.
"Oh Vi! It's fine, Matt is a really nice guy!" said Rhea casually as if that was a reasonable explanation to release him.
"Nice guy? Rhea you don't even know him! Rhea remember, he's the son of Satan," I yelled, throwing my hand in the man's direction.
"What's all the ruckus about?" said Colt walking in, standing beside me.
Then he saw what I was seeing and attacked Matt pinning him to the ground. "Vi, grab the zip-ties!"
"Colt! Let him go!" cried Rhea, trying to pull him off.
"How'd he escape?" Colt frowned looking at her.
"He didn't escape, I let him go! He's a good guy!" said Rhea, still trying to pull him off.
"Please I'm not going to hurt anyone," Matt stuttered, almost looking like a desperate puppy.
"Will you guys just stop and listen to me!" yelled Rhea really loudly taking us by surprise.
We all paused and looked at her. She never raises her voice. This was serious.
She cleared her throat, trying to collect herself. "Well, since you guys left me as babysitter, I thought what better thing to do than know our enemy, right? So I actually spoke to the guy like two civilized people. Matt and his family don't know anything about his father. The man is good at hiding the skeletons in his closet. Heck, if anyone did know his dirty secrets than he still wouldn't be where he is today. Matt didn't want to believe me without evidence and you guys brought it. I showed it to him like you said and now he just wants to help right his father's wrongs, even if it means taking him down."
I took in her words, but couldn't help myself from laughing at the absurdity.
"Vi, tell me she's not serious?" Colt almost begged.
Rhea fumed. She was rarely angered. To see her like this made me reconsider her words. Could she actually be telling the truth?
"I know my dad has done some terrible things in the past, that's why I will not become like him and turn a blind eye. Filth like that should not roam the streets, he shouldn't come near my mom or my siblings. I just want him where he belongs and that's far away from me," he said. The hurt in his expression, the disgust, that was not something someone could fake. It came from someone who felt, who understood.
He was telling the truth.
It seemed like we had a new recruit joining our team, and it was none other than the governor's own flesh and blood.
Things were about to get wild.
