Dad

7:54 AM

Jem, where are you?

Araneta po, Dad. Kovi's last game for Round 1 is starting.

Is something wrong?

No. I just wanted to say something. I don't think this can wait until the weekend, and I don't want to ruin your focus for your game.

But I'm sorry for how I reacted the other night. You're not Chini's babysitter. You're her kuya. There's a difference.

And about the drinking, I'm not saying it was wrong. You're in college. If you want to, you should. I've always just seen you a certain way—responsible, steady, the one who holds things together, and I wasn't prepared for you to be anything other than what we've always known you to be. That's on me.

What I was actually worried about was you and Chini getting hurt. That's it. I should've led with that instead of the lecture.

Dad, I want to be that person, and I AM that person. That's me. I'm the kuya. Ako 'yon and I don't mind it.

And you were right, I needed to hear that lecture regardless.

I believe you, but you're also just a kid, Jem. I keep forgetting that because you've always acted way older than you are. Maybe that's my fault, too.

You were right though, Dad. I should've taken us out of the situation.

I was worried, Jem. That's where I was coming from. Your safety. Both of you.

Alam ko po, Dad.

But again, you're not her babysitter. I need to work on trusting her as well.

Jem, you're my son before anything else. Our firstborn. And I've always been proud of who you are—you have your mother's kindness, her soft-heartedness, her warmth. That's all her and I'm forever grateful for it.

But when I look at what I gave you—I worry sometimes that all I passed onto you was responsibility and burden.

Dad, I have your loyalty, your sense of duty, your grit, your discipline, your belief that showing up matters.

I didn't learn that from nowhere. I learned it from watching you do it my whole life.

Those are yours. And I'm glad I have them.

Thank you for that, anak.

No matter what, I love you, Jem. I've always tried to show and tell you that, but I'll make mistakes as a parent, too.

I hope you can forgive your old man.

Thank you, Dad.

I love you, too.

Enjoy your game and be careful.

I'll see you this weekend.

Will do, po.

And Jem

If there's anything you want to talk about, I'm here.

Thank you, Dad.

Attention, nepos.

From now on, driving is not automatically my job. We rotate. I'm not always the driver. If I want to drink, that's my call.

We decide before we go out.

All in favor, say aye.

Russ

Aye. For Kovi and I.
