TEN
The biggest debate over breakfast arose over whether we should sneak around the airport at morning or nighttime. Of course, the details of how we were going to break in weren't discussed at all. Sebastian said we could just 'wing it' and claimed that his experience sneaking into bars would help him now. At nighttime, we'd have the added protection of Alia at our side but at daytime, it would only be humans on duty at the airport, at least outside the building. Either way, we were going to be in danger but I preferred the daytime. It made everything seem far less creepy.
"It depends on how close we want to get," Michel said as he drank his black coffee. We'd ordered room service yet again. Hopefully we'd be off this island before we had to pay for all of this.
"We need to find out where the planes are and see what protection they have," Zahra laid out cleanly.
"That's pretty damn close," he admitted.
"Who's going to fly the plane anyway," Sebastian asked as he leaned back against the bed while devouring his pancakes. How did boys eat so much and never put on weight?
"Me. Took flying lessons during the summer of sophomore year," I replied to his question while still staring at his pancakes. Thank god that useless course was finally coming in handy now. I'd started it on a dare.
"Thank god, I thought we'd have to kidnap a pilot or something," Sebastian said with a snort. Maybe not a pilot, but I did need one of them to be my co-pilot. We'd decide that later though. For now, we were just scouting.
"So the plan is to find the planes, scope the area and get out of there before someone sees us," Noah restated and everyone collectively nodded.
"The planes should be outside. It's best if we leave in the morning then," he announced. Michel didn't argue and no one else was in the mood to start a fight. Besides, I got what I wanted anyway. Everybody voiced they're approval before heading to their bags to pack stuff for the day. It had been a tight fit with the 6 of us in one room but somehow we'd made it work. Besides, with vampires in the hotel, we had many more things to complain about than sleeping arrangements.
"Alright. Everyone get ready by 10," Noah said, leaving us 20 minutes to come to terms with the fact that we were breaking an entering not just anyplace, but a vampire airport with no plan. Golly this was going to be fun.
It was considerably easier to fetch a cab to the airport. The vamps had probably warned their staff that there were no planes leaving the airport anyway. A few confused looks were shot our way but eventually we made it to the airport we'd arrived at what felt like years ago. I think I'd been a different person then, happier and a lot more obnoxious. Young, free and wild was an apt description. What I would give to go back to those times?
"You ready for this," Noah asked as he ran up to my side, slightly out of breath. Our last conversation was burned into both of our heads. It was our first real argument, and it wasn't something we could sort now. Maybe I had been a little harsh with him. Whatever it was, whoever was in the wrong, now was a good time to move past it.
"Can anyone really be ready to break into a vampire airport," I asked with a smile instead of ignoring him like I'd planned. I really had grown up on some level. He shot me nervous smile, definitely more on edge than I was. Right, I'd forgotten that while my teenage years had been filled with pranks and scheming, his were far more conservative and rigid. It took that much focus and effort to get into Harvard after all. Breaking into airports was going against his very character.
"Davina about our fight earlier, I'm sorry. I should have trusted you," he said with downcast puppy eyes he had nailed down. One of the main reasons I'd actually fallen for him in fact, that and his little dimples. It was nice of him, to talk this out with me instead of talking about this scheme of ours, which is what I'd expected.
"I'm sorry to. It was a little hard to believe," I admitted and he let out a little laugh.
"A little?" I laughed at that, realizing how absolutely twisted this whole thing was. This was definitely an experience of a lifetime, which is what the Internet had promised. But somehow we'd gotten through it so far and our relationship, that had just barely started, was a lot stronger thanks to this experience. Granted, maybe we'd grown up a little fast but our bond was strong.
"We cool," I asked to confirm. He nodded and entwined our hands together. I held on tightly, realizing I would have lost my mind if he hadn't been here at my side, taking control of the situation, making me feel like we had control of this situation.
"Oh and before this whole mess started, I just wanted to do this," he said. He took me by surprise as he stopped our walking and leaned down to press his lips against mine. Our second kiss, just as precious, awkward and beautiful as the first one. I twined my hands in his hair as I returned the kiss with urgency. For a second, vampires, mysterious islands and the mission we had before us faded to mist. For a second, we were the people we had been before all this drama had thrown our lives into a vortex. I clung on to him for dear life, hoping that life wouldn't have me let go of him anytime soon.
"Cut it out lovebirds. We're here!" I drew back at Sebastian's call and he gestured to the airport entrance we'd been walking towards. We all paused at the sight of the guards. 4 to be exact. Well, at least they were human, I thought. We were definitely going to turn heads though if we walked into the airport without so much as a suitcase or a ticket.
"Right so how exactly are we winging this," Michel asked. Clearly winging it hadn't been a good idea. Thankfully, as always, Noah had a plan.
"There's a plane that landed at this airport exactly 20 minutes ago. We need to sneak in as they walk out," Noah said, his eyes trained on the airport entrance intensely. I was afraid the guards would see right through us just for that. A couple walked out the doors with suitcases in hands, thinking they'd be going on a vacation. Maybe if I'd been some kind of hero, I would have found a way to save them. For now, I was too busy trying to save myself. Still, it hurt to see the bright smiles on their faces knowing how quickly it would be wiped away.
"Wouldn't we be going in opposite directions," Michel asked absurdly. My head snapped back to the conversation at hand, trying not to imagine what would happen to the couple soon enough.
"Hence the sneaking," Noah hissed out. Right, walking into the airport.
"What if we get caught," Michel asked. If he asked anything more, I wouldn't be surprised if Noah transformed into a snake and crushed him to death. Sebastian quickly swooped in for damage control.
"Let's hope we don't," he said, following Noah who was already up and walking. A group of Chinese tourists trailing their tour guide were heading for the doors. This was our chance. Tightly gripping Zahra and Rose's hands so I wouldn't lose them, I followed Noah as he merged into the crowd quite seamlessly. A woman looked at us oddly but said nothing as we passed through their group and made it onto the other side. Just like that, we were in the airport. Sebastian and I fist bumped with wide smiles on our faces. Naturally, we were the only two celebrating. The rest just looked around like they'd entered a rat maze. At this rate, our cover would be blown in the next two minutes.
"We have approximately 10 minutes before the last of the people on that flight leave. We need to slip out with them as well. Blend in, find the planes, note down the protection and leave immediately," Noah ordered. I couldn't deny how hot it was when he got all demanding and well, manly for a lack of better word. Sebastian, of course, noted my staring and chose to comment.
"I think you're turning Davina on," he said with a smirk. A brief spark crossed Noah's eyes before they hardened once again with focus. He shot Sebastian a heated glare.
"Not the time Seb. Split up. We meet back here in 8 minutes," he said in a low voice before we split. I followed Noah down the corridor that opened up into the security check in. Noah looked frustrated as he searched for a way around it. Sneaking in with tourists wouldn't work this time.
"Staircase. Over there," I said, pointing to the staff only door right past the rows of metal detectors. That should lead us where we needed to go.
"We need to get past this first," Noah whispered urgently. Right. I looked around and noticed two staff costumes, complete with cleaning materials lying way to conveniently near the bathroom door. Trap, something screamed in my head. Maybe it wouldn't hurt to check it out though.
"Costumes over there," I pointed out. We quickly pulled the cleaning crate into the empty men's bathroom and a note came off the side as we changed into the clothes. I smiled, realizing it had been from Alia, or more likely from her sire that wanted to keep me safe. They were like my two guardian angels or something. I pushed the cart out of the bathroom and the two of us slipped past security with no trouble whatsoever, and into the staff door. So far, this was working well, better than I'd expected.
"Up or down," I asked, gesturing to the metal staircase before us. Realizing there were actually two of us here, I took the stairs leading down and he ran up without a single glance behind him. I didn't put too much thought into that as I raced down the stairs as fast as I could without attracting attention. The first flight down led to a door behind which a security system was in place with cameras that probably covered every inch of the airport. We needed to figure out how to dismantle it temporarily or sneak around it, but first I needed to get in there.
"Think Davina think, " I muttered to myself like a complete fool as I stood at the side of the door to stay out of sight. Perhaps banging my head on a wall would work. I wasn't the genius, far from it in fact. Maybe I should call Noah or Michel for this.
Just then, the door swung open and before I could even brace myself, a woman walked out, clearly a vampire. I tried to remain casual, still in staff costume as I looked at her. She wiped blood from her mouth and stared back, as I probably looked like I was going to start crying any second. I wasn't an actress and I couldn't hide the fear on my face no matter how hard I tried. The woman must have kept herself in the airport and she probably left at night. Why hadn't we thought about this possibility? Why didn't I even have a wooden matchstick to poke her with on me?
She continued to stare without blinking before gesturing to the door she'd just come through.
"All clear. You've got 5 minutes until they wake up," she said before swinging her head over her shoulder and disappearing down the staircase in a flash. Whoever Alia's sire was, I owed him my life for this. He was one resourceful man. Thanking God for letting me live another day, I opened the door she'd come through. Sure enough, they were all knocked out. One was even a vampire; blonde, passed out with his head flopped on the computer keyboard. I approached the cameras cautiously; afraid he'd wake up and rip my throat out.
Unlike how I'd hastily presumed earlier, cameras didn't cover every inch of this place. The planes outside were monitored at a distance and the cameras revealed a total of 12 humans, probably vampires at night, who guarded that area. We'd need serious help to get past them. Bathrooms, souvenir shops and most importantly, all staff passages didn't have any cameras on them either. We'd have to use that to get in here at night somehow.
"That's it," I said with childish glee to myself. For once, I'd actually accomplished something and helped this group out. Penning down the information on a paper just in case I forgot, I slipped it into my pocket and turned to the front door.
And of course, my luck would have it that even with two minutes to spare by the vampire lady's count, the blonde that had been passed out on the keyboard was now staring at me with demonic red eyes. He took an intimidating step forward and my knees began to shake.
I was so royally screwed.
