EIGHT
Voices. There were at least 5 voices talking at the same bloody time and it was giving me a pounding headache. Sadly, my mouth didn't seem to be working properly so I couldn't tell them to shut up. Slowly, I began to wiggle my fingers and toes and the talking abruptly stopped. What the hell happened? Why weren't people letting me sleep?
And that's when everything came rushing back, all at once like a bullet to the heart. The sudden rush of sensations and memories had me bolting upright like I'd been electrocuted. I struggled to catch my breath and open my eyes. Naturally, whoever had been closest to me, Rosaline, screamed at the sudden movement and dove under a chair near the bed. Sebastian screamed bloody murder and I think Zahra punched someone out of fright, who then let out a series of expletives. What a wonderful thing to wake up to.
Once my eyes adjusted to the bright light, I realized that the poor soul that had been punched was Michel. After the shock of seeing me awake had worn off, Noah was the first to recover. He was badgering me with concern before I could even say a word.
"Are you alright? Does anything hurt? Did somebody do something to you?"
"Did you get hammered?" Of course Sebastian would ask that. I flipped him the bird as I slowly opened my eyes. The light scorched my corneas and I almost cried out.
"No to all of that. I'm fine. My wrists hurt a bit though," I managed to say before anybody else began to talking. My wrists had purplish black bruises on them. That was from where he'd gripped me. Damn that was one strong grip.
"Davina what the hell happened to you? We found you collapsed with your head down at the bar table," Zahra all but screamed as she jumped up on the bed. At the bar table? Hadn't I been in the, oh.
"Alia must have sat me down there," I muttered out loud before realizing how crazy it must sound to everyone else. I wouldn't have believed it either if I hadn't seen it. She was actually alive. My baby was alive. Granted she was a vampire but she was still here.
"Oh crap she must have hit her head pretty hard," Michel said apologetically as he iced his face where Zahra had punched him. Right, they'd seen Alia die. It would take more than my word to convince them otherwise.
"No Alia was there. You're not going to believe me but it's true," I said assuredly. They still looked at me like I was crazy. Why couldn't Alia just appear right now? Or had I actually hallucinated the whole thing. A lot of things had been out of my control yesterday night.
"Davina why don't you rest a bit more," Rosaline suggested as she began to fluff my pillows. I pushed her away with desperation and panic now. It was one thing for them to think I was going crazy. It was another entirely for me to think the same. I couldn't let them convince me that she hadn't saved me last night.
"No listen to me! This island is infested with vampires and Alia is one. She saved me from this vampire who tried to suck all my blood," I shouted. Oh god they weren't going to believe me. Not even Noah, or Zahra. They just looked at me with pity in their eyes.
"Davina are you sure," Rosaline started with concern I hated. I was fine! Tired but fine.
"I'm telling the truth. See, here's the bite mark. On my neck and Google translate what Upir means. It means vampire Rose. I'm telling the truth guys. Please believe me." I couldn't help the tears that went sliding down my face. My friend had come back from the dead and I was slowly losing my mind. Had Alia really appeared or had I just missed her so much and hallucinated from all the blood loss. Whatever it was, I knew vampires were real. The bite mark in my neck would be a remainder. Besides, my brain could never conjure up so much pleasure even under the influence of alcohol.
"I think we all need a bit more evidence than-," A thump sounded outside the room. It sounded like it came from a door over, our room. Somebody was in our room.
"Did you hear that or was that just me," Michel asked and we all simultaneously looked to the far wall as another thump sounded, followed by a loud voice. It was too difficult to catch the words.
"We need to check it out. You girls stay here. We'll go," Sebastian suggested. Zahra was quick to stop him.
"Stop being a sexist pig. We girls are going. If we get caught, we'll just say that we left something in the room," she said. Neither of the boys looked convinced with our plan that was extremely far from foolproof but there was no arguing with Zahra.
"No, Zahra please don't go. They're probably vampires. Please listen to me," I begged knowing it was of no use as another thump sounded. Why couldn't Alia just appear right now, unless, was it Alia in there?
"I'll stay out of sight Davina. I promise," Zahra said as she moved for the door with Rosaline. I was right behind them. If this was really happening, I wasn't letting them go alone. Maybe the three of us could stand a chance together if it was actually a vampire.
"I'm coming too," I said. Zahra shot me a condescending glare that grated on my nerves.
"No you're-" I interrupted her before she could finish with enough fire she knew she couldn't argue with.
"I'm coming." She let out a disgruntled sigh and the three of us entered the hallway, getting just close enough to hear what the man was saying.
"I'm going to ask you one more time. Who's behind this?" His voice was deep, gravelly and absolutely terrifying. In my head, that voice matched with a man the size of the Hulk which wasn't too reassuring. If we got caught, we were so dead.
"I can't tell you that." I'd heard that voice somewhere but I just couldn't place it. Even full of pain, that voice had a sweetness I knew.
"Well then you're of no use to me," The deep voice roared. I was surprised the paintings in the hallways didn't shake and fall down.
A sickening snap echoed from the room, followed by dead silence. We waited with bated breath, staring at the door to our bedroom. Complete and utter silence. Had that man killed him? Had they both simultaneously died or something?
"Guys let's get out of here," Zahra whispered and three of us turned, bumping straight into an impossibly tall man who looked at us with bright red eyes. Vampire. It was the man from inside. How had he gotten here so fast? Oh right, vampire. I held my breath, as did the others as he leaned closer with a dangerous smirk playing across his face. This close, I could see his fangs and I shuddered, imagining them sinking into my skin.
"Eavesdropping could get you killed. I suggest you don't do it again." Such ominous words but he said nothing more. With that he walked off, leaving us dumbfounded, staring at his broad back. Why hadn't he killed us? It would have been so easy, just three snaps. I doubt he felt sorry for us in anyway. In his eyes, I could see the pure enjoyment he had for making us practically quake at our knees with fear.
Yet, he'd let us live. Somehow I didn't think it was a good thing that he had. He had something planned for us, or he was using us for something and I doubt we were going to like it.
"He's a vampire isn't he," Rosaline asked with a shaky voice. I just nodded, still recovering from my second near death experience in 24 hours. Was I wearing a t-shirt that said 'kill me' or something? Who had I hurt?
"Who do you think he killed in there," Zahra asked. I didn't want to know but she was already dragging us to the door that was slightly ajar.
Slowly we approached the room, trying to be as silent as possible in case there were more people in there. As we stood in the doorway, I thought for a moment that the room was completely bare. Nothing was different from the last time we'd been here; not even the painting on the wall had shifted out of place.
"The bathroom, check the bathroom," Zahra said, nudging me towards the closed door.
I slowly budged the door open and for all my efforts to not scream, a scream came out anyway as a head rolled out the door and stopped at my feet. Blood leaked from where it had been cut out. Behind the door lay the connected body surrounded by a pool of blood. Rosaline fainted behind me and Zahra quickly caught her and propped her against the wall. Despite the head's closed eyes, I still recognized him as the green-eyed man that had let us leave. He was obviously dead. My mind had descended into some kind of eerie calm that was accepting this murder like it was just another everyday occurrence. It had been happening quite a lot recently.
"Oh my god someone call the police." Rosaline had awoken again, looking so far from her usual composed self that I almost didn't recognize her. My voice was flat to my own ears as I replied to her outburst.
"The police aren't going to help Rose. No one will." He had everyone under his thumb, except this man and whomever he'd been working for. I doubt whoever that was would live for long. Whoever he was, he was the only thing that stood between the man that had threatened us in the hallway and us.
"Why did he leave his body behind," Rose asked. The boys had rushed into the room now, hearing the scream and Noah had instantly puked near the bed as the horrifying sight greeted them. Well, it's not like we were staying here anymore, I thought as he dry heaved. As if the memories of Alia weren't enough to drive us out of here, there was now this.
"He was trying to scare the crap out of us I guess," Zahra said to Rosaline as she continued to hold her weak form.
"Well he just succeeded," Sebastian, said as he came to stand next to me, with a hand at my shoulder that I barely felt. Two murders were enough for a lifetime and I'd practically witnessed both back to back.
"What are we going to do," I asked as I looked up at Sebastian. He was trying to hold the fort down by pretending to be brave and funny but the façade was slowly fading away. The 22-year-old boy was just as terrified as I was.
"Let's just get back to our room first. I'm not staying with that nasty head for a second longer," he announced, kicking the head back into the bathroom and shutting the bathroom door behind it.
It took us ten minutes to brief the guys on our terrifying encounter with Count Dracula, as I'd taken to calling him. After getting some food in our stomachs as well, we were in considerably better shape to tackle the humongous problem on our hands. Problem was that no one knew how. How do you go up against things that are stronger, faster and more dangerous than you could ever be? Not to mention the fact that we didn't even know the whole story. If the vamps wanted our blood, why hadn't they taken it already? Were they working floor by floor or something?
"We need a plan or we're going to get killed," Michel said. Thanks for stating the obvious moron. Clearly my patience was running thin right now.
"We should find out if there's another way off this island," Sebastian suggested. Maybe we could swim or something if things got desperate.
"Taxi boy mentioned planes for non-commoners. That's our only shot," Zahra said. Yeah, I'm sure 6 idiots could hijack a plane with little to no trouble. Thankfully my sarcastic comments remained inside my head.
"I'm guessing the non-commoners are vampires and I doubt they'd be kind enough to lend us their plane," Michel said sarcastically.
"Look we need to find out what we're going up against. For that, we need to know more about vampires," Noah said. The strength and maturity in his voice was extremely grounding. It was nice to know one of us was sort of in control.
"You're going to drag us to the library aren't you," Sebastian asked with a whine as he flopped face first on the bed.
"It could be our best shot. No human is going to tell us anything about the vampires out of fear. Approaching a vampire won't go down well." But could a library really tell us the truth about vampires or was it just going to be myths. I didn't want to use a wooden stake only to find out it did nothing to them in the last second. That would be quite unfortunate.
"It would be 6 against 1. We might have a fair shot," Michel suggested. We wouldn't have a fair shot, not a chance. The only edge we had up our sleeve was that we knew they could die if we beheaded them and I doubted anyone could get near enough to a vampire to do the deed. Let alone the fact that I doubted any of us had the guts to actually kill another being, vampire or not.
"I'm not putting my life on the line with a 'might'," Noah said tensely. Ah there it was, the battle of the testosterone. It was bound to happen at some point.
"Our lives are already on the line Noah," Michel said with an edge in his tone. Noah wasn't going to back down that easily. The rest of us watched their exchange like it was a Ping-Pong game.
"Doesn't mean we have to take unnecessary risks Michel," Noah fired back. This was definitely going to go down in punches and it wasn't something we needed right now. We needed to stand united, as one team.
"Guys that's enough. We'll go to the library first. If that doesn't work out, we go up against a vamp tomorrow. Deal?" Rosaline took charge, forcing the boys' faces apart since they'd been leaning towards each other for some intense staring contest.
"Deal," Everyone muttered in unison and I shot Rose a grateful smile.
