Be Strong
November 22-
The kids were on Thanksgiving break, and Jessica was off from work until the Monday after Thanksgiving.
"I'm ready to get this cast off, I hate it so much!" Olivia whines setting her crutches down.
Jessica giggles and walks over to her holding her head in her hands. "Only two more weeks my love." Jessica kisses her forehead and Olivia rolls her eyes.
"What are we going to do for Thanksgiving?" Sean says curiously taking a bite of his toast.
Jessica sighs, "I'm not sure..."
Usually for Thanksgiving Jessica's parents went on a week cruise. Jessica, Danny, and the kids always went over Still Water, Danny's hometown, for Thanksgiving. Jessica siblings went to their in-laws too. Jessica hadn't herd from Zoe and automatically assumed she was uninvited.
"Has grandma Zoe not called? She usually does." Olivia becomes discouraged.
"I think you two should call her. I don't want you guys to be stuck at home on Thanksgiving." Jessica says
"We don't want you alone." Sean exclaims
"Oh honey, I'll be fine." Jessica smiles turning away.
"Isn't that weird, this is our first holiday without dad." Olivia sighs
Jessica stops for a moment and takes a deep breath.
"Liv" Sean looks at Olivia sternly
"What?" Olivia groans
"I know... It must be hard on you two. I'm so sorry."
"Don't apologize mom. We can make our own new traditions!" Olivia smiles
"Just give your grandma a call, okay?" Jessica nods
**
Jessica decided to stop over her parents house before they left. The kids stayed home for the day.
When Jessica got to her moms Jessica's niece Taylor was there. Taylor was George's daughter. Taylor was five.
"Aunt Jessie, I missed you!" Taylor says running towards the door
"You've gotten so big! Should I still call you little girl?" Jessica giggles
"Yes! I'm going to go upstairs real quick, I'll be back."
Dorthy walked up to Jessica and gave her a hug.
"I sweetheart. I'm sorry about the other day."
"Mom, it's fine. I appreciate you helping." Jessica nods
"There's my girl, how are you?"
Albert walks up behind Dorthy and hugs Jessica.
"Hi Dad, are you guys excited?"
"Yes... But we are thinking of not going." Dorthy says softly
"What? Why? You've been going since George graduated high school?"
"We know... We don't want to leave you here." Albert says
"No, don't go because of me. I'll be fine!" Jessica pouts
"Jessie, we don't want you and the kids alone of Thanksgiving." Dorthy says
"No! You better get on that plane and go!" Jessica says sternly
"At least let us give you some money to get some things to make for Thanksgiving." Albert pulls out his wallet and Jessica widens her eyes.
She puts her hands on top of Alberts and shakes her head. "No dad... I can't take your money. Really, I'm great money wise."
"Jessie..." Dorthy tilts her head
"What? I am!"
"Fine. But you know our motto. Our doors are always open."
"I know. You two have done so much for me." Jessica looks at her parents and gives them a hug.
"I'm just so mad! I let that man marry my baby girl. I gave him everything. And he does this to me. What the hell?" Albert becomes frustrated
"Dad, it's okay...."
**
On Jessica's way home she got a call on her phone. She reached over and answered it.
"Hello?" Jessica says softly
"Oh Jessica! Hi, how are you? I haven't seen you in a while or herd from you. Let me tell you things have been crazy busy out here." Jessica recognized the voice, it's was Danny's mother, Zoe. Jessica was shocked.
"Hi Zoe. I'm glad to hear from you. How's John?" Jessica says sincerely
"He's okay, his Parkinson's is getting worse, but he's okay."
"I'm sorry to hear."
"It's okay. But I have the perfect cure! You and Danny should bring the kids up for Thanksgiving. We always love having you four for Thanksgiving!"
"Zoe... Have you talked to Danny?"
"No Jessica, not since Olivia's surgery. Is everything okay? Is Daniel hurt?" Zoe begins to panic.
Jessica didn't know what to say. She would have imagined that Danny kept in touch with his mother and told her. That's what Jessica thought when Zoe hadn't called.
"No... It's just, well... Danny wants a divorce. He left. We are no longer together." Jessica says. After she said that her heart hurt a bit.
The phone was silent.
"Zoe?"
"That ass, have you herd from him?"
"After he left, no."
"When did this happen? Oh Jessica, I'm so sorry!"
"The day before our anniversary. But Zoe, it would be good for John to see Danny and the kids. I could always drive Sean and Olivia up."
"Don't be silly Jessica, I want you here. You are apart of the family. Danny is not coming."
"Wait Zoe, Danny is your son. When I told you I didn't mean for you to be upset with him."
"Jessica, he hasn't called in months. He never does. I've been upset. Besides, I raised my son to be a loyal man."
After Jessica got off the phone with Zoe, she felt so guilty. She wanted to keep the affair to herself for obvious reasons.
**
Thanksgiving-
Jessica and the kids left the house around twelve. The car ride to Stillwater was about two hours. The kids were excited to see Danny's family. Jessica was a bit nervous. She loved Danny's family, but she didn't know who he talked to and what he said. She was extremely nervous that Danny would show up.
"Oh gosh, you guys are here!" Zoe runs to the door and hugs the kids and Jessica.
"Hi grammy!" Olivia smiles
"How's your leg?" She says looking at Olivia's cast.
"It's better, I get my cast off soon." She smiles
"And Sean, you've grown. My first grandson is growing up!" Zoe puts her hands on Sean's arm and smiles.
"It's nice to see you Gram."
"Why don't you kids go say hi to everyone? Grandpa John is in the living room." Zoe nods
The kids go into the other room and Jessica stood there with a smile.
"Jessica, you are too skinny. You better eat today." Zoe hugs Jessica for a long time then starts to cry.
"Oh Zoe, don't cry..." Jessica breaks the hugs and looks down at Zoe.
"I just feel so bad. I called Daniel, he didn't answer. He left a message today and said he's in Saint Bart's. Where in the hell did he get the money to go there?" Zoe becomes frustrated and angry.
Jessica sighs and hugs Zoe again.
Danny was in Saint Bart's. That was Danny and Jessica's dream vacation stop. They promised to use their savings to go there when the kids graduate. Well, that dream was gone.
"He never deserved you. You were too good for him Jessica. You gave him everything and he does this. I didn't raise an asshole, I promise you Jessica."
"Zoe, it's okay... let's just enjoy today. Don't think about it." Jessica smiles
"You're so strong."
"Thank you... I try."
"I-I'm just shocked."
**
All of Danny's siblings, nieces, nephews, and parents were spending Thanksgiving together. People were shocked to not see Danny and pretty upset. They all loved Jessica and the kids. They felt bad, but tried to take their mind off of the whole situation.
"Jessica, my dad wants to talk you." Danny's sister Angelica calls from the office.
Jessica excuses herself from her conversation and walks into the office. John sat in his wheel chair next to the couch.
His body was very frail. He's Parkinson's took away his ability to do all of the things he loved like golf and working out. His disease made him shaky and weak. It was harder to understand him.
"Hi John... Dinner was great, huh?" Jessica says closing the door behind her.
John smiles and pats his hand on the couch next to him.
Jessica nods and walks over. John takes Jessica's hand and looks at her with sad eyes.
"Thank you for coming today." He says softly
"Oh it's no problem. The kids and I love visiting. It's like a second home." She nods
"What Danny did, there's no excuse. I can't believe him."
"Oh John, we don't have to talk about that." Jessica shakes her head.
"I want to. If you need anything tell me." John says sternly
Jessica nods and looks down.
"I was so happy when Danny brought you home. You are such a wonderful women and mother. Your smart, hard working, and caring. You deserve the world. Make sure that you don't let this stop you from finding a good man. I want that for you. You're like a daughter to me. You've done so much for my family, your family, and Danny. Zoe and I will be here for you."
"Thank you John... You were always so supportive. I appreciate it so much." Jessica's eyes watery and she hugs John.
"You did good with those kids. They are great kids."
"I try my hardest." Jessica giggles
"Be strong Jessica. You're strong."
"I will John. And you too, be strong."
***
Later that night people started to leave, so did Jessica and the kids.
"Thanks for coming! I loved seeing all of
You." Zoe says walking Jessica and the kids out to the car.
"Bye Grammy, I'll see you soon." Olivia gives her one last hug and gets in the car.
"I'll try to drive up on a weekend and fix that gutter for you." Sean smiles
"Thank you Sean, goodbye." Zoe gives him a hug and he gets in the car.
Jessica leans up against the car. "Tonight was wonderful. John is looking a lot better too."
Zoe covers her face.
"Zoe? Is everything okay?"
"He's not doing better. The doctors only gave him a few months..." Zoe sobs in Jessica's arms.
"Oh Zoe, I didn't know..."
"Just bring the kids around a little more, it makes him feel better to see them. That's why I haven't called lately, I've been so busy with his doctor appointments."
"I'll bring them out as much as possible."
"Thank you..."
