chapter twelve

After half an hour of training was over the head scientist returned to the teens, staring down at them as if he were disgusted by their mere existence. They stared back in much the same manner.

Clapping his hands once, the head scientist walked to the far side of the training arena, away from the teens, before addressing them. Once he was across the room from them, he turned around with a subtle smirk on his face. "Now, let's see if your training has paid off. Let's have a race. First one to me chooses who they want to spar with first." All the teens exchanged a look but the twins stared at one another a bit longer, nodding briefly before turning back to the head scientist. "Everyone touch the wall behind you. When I say go, run to me. Understand?"

"Yes, sir." They all replied monotonously.

"Good. One, two, three...go!"

The eight teens took off running towards the man, none even comparing to Speed, who made it to the head scientist in a blink of an eye.

Once the rest of the teens were across the arena and standing next to the head scientist and Speed, the former grinned wickedly, staring at the white haired boy. "Congratulations, Speed, on your victory."

"Thank you, sir."

"However, it was ill gained. You cheated by using your powers, which means you must deal with the consequences." The head scientist ignored the horrified look that both the young twins were giving him, reaching into his pocket and pulling out a small device. He looked at the gathering of teenagers, a smug expression on his face. "Anyone want to take his punishment for him?"

"I w - "

"Anyone besides Wiccan?" The teens stayed silent, ignoring the looks the twins were giving them. "No? Good pets. Now, Speed, I'd like you to think about who you'd like to spar with while receiving your punishment, alright?"

Tommy didn't say anything, instead he glared at the man as he turned the device on. Immediately, the white haired boy was on the ground spasming in pain. The head scientist grinned, pressing harder on the device, which resulted in Tommy spasming more intensely.

"Stop it! You're killing him!" Billy cried out, watching in horror as blood started to seep out of his brother's nose and ears. The man holding the device said nothing, only increasing the pain more and pulling a guttural scream from Tommy. Billy grit his teeth, his eyes and hands glowing with energy as he watched his captor torture his brother. "Hand me the device, now!"

Billy instantly felt an enormous, agonizing pressure in his mind and his heart, causing him to collapse to the ground next to his twin and clutch at his chest. Through the pounding migraine, the teen heard the scientist chuckle and crouch next to the twins. "You two have been here the longest, you should know how to play by the rules."

The brothers said nothing, looking subtly past the man torturing them to their fellow captives, sending the young god a wink.

Loki got the message, remembering the conversation from just fifteen minutes prior...

All of the teens were switching their workout stations, passing each other as they moved about the arena.

Billy made eye contact with Tommy and nodded towards Kate. Tommy gave his brother a single decisive nod, walking up to the young archer and whispering lowly to her as he helped her set up the weights.

Loki watched as Kate went to America, who in turn whispered to Teddy, who muttered something to David in passing, who then chatted with Cassie, who finally reached Loki, grabbing the young god by the wrist and shaking her head.

"Loki, if I may...that is not how you hold a kettle bell." As the youngest leaned closer to Loki to 'show' him how to hold the kettle bell, she mumbled quickly under her breath. "The twins are planning on contacting the Avengers to get us out of here and they need your help. You have a way to contact Thor, correct?"

The god of mischief nodded, taking the kettle bell from the blonde. "What message do they need me to send?"

Cassie glanced towards the far side of the gym where the two brothers were bickering. "When Wiccan gives you the signal, he wants you to start showing Thor exactly what you see before you. You can do that, right?"

"Of course I can!" Loki sorted indignantly. He looked at the young blonde before him. "How will I know the signal?"

At that moment, the brunet twin appeared behind the god and the young teen girl. "Oh, you'll know, Loki. Just make sure none of the other's interfere before hand, no matter what. Okay?"

Cassie narrowed her eyes. "Why do you say that?"

Billy winked. "My brother and I have been here our entire lives. We can handle anything they throw at us. So, no matter what we say or do, do not interfere, got it?"

As Wiccan spoke those words, the entire group of teens glanced over at the trio and nodded solemnly, unsure of what they just agreed to.

Loki found Thor's mind easily and began projecting what he was seeing to his godly brother, standing stoically with the rest of the teens as the twins spasmed on the floor.

The head scientist seemed to be getting bored with torturing the twins, pressing something on the device in his hand. The two brothers stopped twitching on the floor. Speed just laid there while Wiccan rolled over and vomited, a trace of blood in the bile. Both the brothers looked to the other, crawling over to check their sibling over for any trace of permanent damage.

Finding none, they turned to glare at the man responsible for their pain. He didn't even react, just waved the device in the air. "Ah, ah, ah. I wouldn't do what you are thinking of doing, young ones. After all, with just a click of this button, I can take away your free will and make you my mindless puppets." Their eyes widened at that and they clutched each other's hands. The man smirked. "Hm, why don't I do just that? You two have been nothing but trouble for me ever since we woke you up."

Billy turned to the rest of the captives, panic in his eyes. "Forget what I said before, don't let them do this to us! Don't let them take away our free will and our souls!" The head scientist  was fiddling with the device, ignoring the teens as the two brothers pleaded with their new found allies. "Please! Intervene! Stop him before he - "

"Ah, there it is." The head scientist pressed a button and the twin's expressions immediately went slack as they let go of each other, kneeling obediently before the man. He walked up to them and pat the tops of their heads, turning to look at the other six teens. "Let this be a lesson to the rest of you. Obey my every command while your mind, body, and souls are still your own. Choose not to and you will have the same fate as Speed and Wiccan here."

The group of teens gulped, eyeing each other as the head scientist strode to the other side of the arena when he spotted a lackey standing there with  a tablet.

Kate approached the catatonic twins first, waving a hand in their faces.

They didn't even flinch.

She shuddered. "Hey, Billy? Tommy? This is all an act, right? You're not really under his complete control, right?"

The brothers turned to the archer in sync, their eyes void of any emotion or thought. "Who are Billy and Tommy?"

Kate gasped, stepping back away from them. She looked to the other five, guilt and regret on her face. "What have we done? We should have stopped that devil from doing this to them!"

"What could we have done, Bishop? If we tried anything, we would've ended up in the same state." Loki whispered harshly. "We have to tread carefully now if we don't wish to suffer the same fate as those two."

"Loki is right. We need to be extra careful, especially around the brothers and the man who did this to them." David sighed.

"Exactly. Alleyne has the spirit.  We must obey them if we wish to keep ourselves intact. We will find a way to bring the twins back, but we can't do that if we are in the same boat as them. Any objections? Altman? Chavez? Lang?" Loki stared at the remaining three, who had stayed quiet during the whole ordeal.

Teddy narrowed his eyes. "Why do you keep referring to all of us by our last name? What are you - "

Loki cut him off with a glare, gesturing with just his eyes at the twins that still stood a dozen feet away from them. "Whatever do you mean? I always refer to all of you by your last names." He grit out. "After all, how would you know who I am talking about if I did not? Would you prefer I call you each by your full name, Teddy Altman?"

"That is just weird." America snorted.

"That it is, America Chavez." David caught on to what Loki was doing, giving the others a signal to do the same.

"Well, David Alleyne, a true prodigy can be unnerved by something. Who would've known." Cassie bit her lip at the little joke she threw in.

"That was a bad one, Cassie Lang." Kate chuckled nonetheless.

"I thought it was funny, Kate Bishop." Loki snickered, glad at least some of the team understood that he was still 'streaming' to Thor and that by giving away their full names, it would aid the Avengers in their rescue if they knew who they were rescuing and what they were capable of.

He just hoped Thor was passing this information along to the other Avengers.

And that they rescued Loki as well, despite the chaos he had wrought years before.
